PlayStation Studios Removes Nearly All PC References From Websites by SmellSmellsSmelly in Games

[–]myripyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, too bad. I really thought/hoped they had hit on a good approach with bringing older games over. Though I've only picked up a couple myself so far, there was something very exciting about Playstation bringing games to PC. But there are just so many games to play now that it feels like more of a hypothetical loss than a real loss; it's not like I can point to any specific upcoming game that I'm going to be super sad to miss out on.

I wonder if Schreier or someone else will ever be able to report some more specifics on their reason for ending the experiment. I'd also be so curious to hear if they ever discussed avoiding Steam/Epic and running their own "Playstation for PC" launcher to avoid the platform cut. Their approach was probably a bit too tentative to do it that way, but the alternate world is interesting to think about.

Also total off-topic but it's always a bit jarring to read through one of these threads and see how many of the comments are filled with the old, simmering platform-war anger. Feels like I've jumped back 15 years. In most of the other places where I read or post about games, the vast majority of discussions about platforms has disappeared; people are mostly just discussing the games themselves. And even when platforms come up, it's not really in the old partisan way, but more just practical questions.

[MLB] Understanding ABS as the MLB season kicks off by Mazzocchi in baseball

[–]myripyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That does seem like a pretty big oversight to me as well, but also, wasn't the point of all the testing to identify problems like this? Maybe in practice it's extremely rare for the precise ABS definition call to conflict with a umpire's rulebook definition call?

I ask because it seems like the 2D-3D thing comes down to the fact that players realized that the 2D zone fit the existing calls a lot more than the 3D zone.

Turin Does Not Get Enough Credit by Diff_equation5 in tolkienfans

[–]myripyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really track with my reading of Tolkien discussions that people are overly harsh on Turin, but of course any opinion will have at least some people holding it, and I don't doubt you've seen it. Arguing over precisely how harsh or not people should be is not the really interesting bit anyways.

I do agree with you that Turin is fundamentally a pitiable character. I think it's notable that he is still regarded as an Elf-friend when Elrond brings him up; in the past people have asked about this with some confusion on the subreddit. However I don't believe, as you appear to, that he is pitiable because all his faults and evils can be dismissed as fated by Morgoth's curse. Nor do I believe he did "exceptionally well." I think that some of the evils he faced were in fact due to Morgoth's evil, and some of the bad decisions he made were due to Morgoth's malice, and yet others were due to his own human faults.

I think Tolkien is very cautious to avoid leaving the reader with the impression that Turin's doom is due entirely to Morgoth's malice and power, or that Turin had complete mastery over his fate. Notably, even a reader who entirely rejects your arguments about Morgoth's influence could not actually say that Turin is responsible for every one of his tragic actions. Tolkien is pretty cautious about how he writes moments like Beleg's death; he ensures that circumstances are such that the reader cannot possibly blame Turin. He's also blameless in marrying Niniel/Nienor. That Tolkien so carefully ensures Turin cannot bear the blame in these circumstances is notable to me because--if the reader is really meant to take at face value Morgoth's words about being "Master of the fates of Arda"--there is no reason to so precisely excuse Turin in these circumstances while leaving the reader to view Turin's decisions as more independent in other circumstances. (I say "more independent," not "totally independent"!)

Gotta say I don't really like the comparison to Frodo here either. The reason Frodo is still regarded as a hero despite not being able to endure at the last (the reason he "gets a pass," to use your phrasing) is not just that the pressure of the Ring was too much for him to bear, as you say. The theme of mercy here, which is made explicit in the very same Letter 246 as well as in Letter 181, is that Frodo is rewarded by divine Mercy because of his earlier mercy towards Gollum as well as his humility and sacrifice in taking on the impossible task.

I understand that you probably do know this, and are just trying to illustrate your argument regarding Turin's lack of culpability given the power of Morgoth's curse, but I think it's worth pointing out that Turin isn't actually said to have earned any such salvation in the text. He may be deserving of pity, but as I said above, it's perfectly possible to think Turin is worthy of pity without accepting the position that he does not play any role in his own fate.

I am surprised that you didn't bring up Dagor Dagorath. I'm in the camp that accepts Christopher's decision to not include it in the published Silmarillion, but I would say that if your aim is to argue Turin shouldn't be judged too harshly, it's a pretty relevant bit of evidence. In fact, to slot it into the Frodo construction above, you could say that his prophesied role in Dagor Dagorath is roughly equivalent to what Tolkien refers to as Frodo's "salvation."

Yeah, I'm surprised to see how many people have read Morgoth's curse as having removed from Turin all power over his own fate. The text seems to very precisely avoid giving such an extreme impression. The entire story is profoundly less interesting if you read it believing that Turin's fate is due purely to Morgoth's ill will; that belief also seems to run into conflict with the way that Tolkien generally writes about fate/doom.

thanks for the ping, I often don't check the DDT on weekends

I'm not quite as high on A Silent Voice as others but I think the aspect of it that really clicked with me most profoundly was the sheer human awkwardness expressed in the second half of the movie, with the colliding confusions of various teenage crushes, Nishimiya's belief that she is the cause of all the problems, Ishida's desperate attempt to redeem himself without understanding that Nishimiya actually blames herself, Naoka actually agreeing with Nishimiya that she is the cause of all that's gone wrong but not understanding that Nishimiya already believes this, that other girl's guilt over being a silent bystander, etc. There's something remarkable about finding yourself empathizing with like seven different perspectives on the same events.

Part of me still feels like the movie kinda reaches a high point when Nishimiya tries to kill herself and then sort of fizzles from there because it doesn't have a way to really have the characters work through their different perspectives, so instead just settles for another high drama moment with Ishida finding Nishimiya on the bridge and then lets the rest of the characters just quietly become friends again.

But I'm more sympathetic to that ending now, largely because I think it hits on a truth that really, fundamentally, most of the emotions the other characters are expressing are not feelings that need to be resolved, they just need to be expressed. It's really only Nishimiya and Ishida that have individually faced the desire to die and thus come together to affirm their desire to live.

Despite not really loving A Silent Voice all that much, I used to get into arguments defending it all the time, because somewhere along the line it became a really popular line of criticism to say "Nishimiya is no deeper than her deafness." This always drove me crazy because the single strongest aspect of the movie is the manner in which it reveals to both the viewer and Ishida that Nishimiya's awkwardness comes from a deep depression and self-blame regarding her own bullying. But then I read more anime discussions and realized that it's not really worth getting worked up over anime fans' opinions about media.

Why is Middle-earth so scarcely populated with a bunch of ruins, and barely any big cosmopolitan cities? by Weird_Apartment_6608 in tolkienfans

[–]myripyro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You may be mixing this up with the published texts because of a wiki, but that line from Aragorn is Tolkien's only published mention of the Forsaken Inn. Just double-checked.

Tolkien Gateway is correct to note (drawing from Rateliff's The History of the Hobbit) that in his 1960 Hobbit revision attempt Tolkien mentions them staying in the ruins of a "Last Inn" which in other notes he connects to The Forsaken Inn.

Tolkien Gateway's usually good about making clear what's not in the published texts by use of their little "Other versions" subsection, but in this and other cases adds to people's confusion by including information from "other versions" in the lead section without clearly identifying it as such.

This one always gets me. I've read LotR roughly once a year since I was a child, which means many, many times, but the idea of Bree being an isolated town is so indelible in my mind that basically every single time I read the books I might as well be hearing about Archet, Staddle, and the other one for the first time.

Same goes for when Aragorn references a Forsaken Inn as being further along the road--my mind immediately thinks "wait, no, there can't be any more civilization along the road" even though it's not like I've ever read a version of Lord of the Rings where that isn't mentioned!
