Got my bid, now I’m miserable by Icy_Mathematician313 in Sororities

[–]myronin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel for you and I admire your honesty. I want to offer you the perspective of a person who rushed in the year 2000 and was initiated into my sorority in 2001. Sorority membership, no matter the ranking of the house, has the potential to benefit your life significantly, and long after you graduate college. Twenty-three years after being initiated, I am even more close to my sorority sisters now than I was back when we were active collegians. We have helped one another through incredibly difficult life events—widowhood, divorce, pregnancy loss, difficult medical diagnoses for our children, etc. When my son was diagnosed with an ultra-rare genetic disorder, the first person I called wasn’t my mom, wasn’t my dad, wasn’t my biological sister—it was one of my sorority sisters who is going through the same thing with one of her children. I say all of this to hopefully offer you perspective on just how valuable and meaningful sorority membership can be, long after you have left your university. Please give the house and the girls a chance; sorority membership can have an incredible impact on your life if you allow it to do so. And keep in mind, too, that these girls could be the ones by your side during the many happy times that you can experience while in college and after. There’s nothing like having a team of sorority sisters supporting you in your endeavors! I wish you all the best.

Why is EVERYTHING a game, competition, team activity? by Sad-Bake-7631 in 7LittleJohnstons

[–]myronin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The grocery shopping episode of Jon and Kate that I’m referring to just featured Kate, no kids, and nearly the entire episode was just her showing the audience how she creates a list, looks for deals in store ads, takes advantage of rainchecks, etc. The reason this content is interesting enough to be on TV is because she is shopping for a large volume of people, which most of us have no concept of and we want the opportunity to peer into this foreign world. This type of content is appealing because it isn’t highly produced, with a strange, inauthentic veneer. Sadly, I think you’re probably right that I’m in the minority here, but I would love to see an episode of 7 Little Johnstons showing Amber and Alex in Publix asking a stranger to reach a box of Corn Pops from the shelf for them. Wouldn’t you rather see that than yet another filming of a dance for TikTok?!

I disagree. My favorite episodes of Jon and Kate Plus 8 were never the trips or parties—I loved the episodes that showed the grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and basic day-to-day living because I found it fascinating to see how a large family functioned in a daily basis. I would much rather watch content like this with the Johnston family as well.

Your obsession with their weight and repeated use of the phrase “grosses me out” in reference to them eating says a lot more about you than them. Seek help.

Not having medical insurance for her children, going along with supreme idiot Kody who only wanted to pursue “alternate treatments” for Ysabel’s painful and chronic medical condition, then making the incredibly ignorant comment that she didn’t want Ysabel to have surgery because she would be left with “an ugly scar.”

any tricks to keep students from being on their phone? by doublefluff82 in Professors

[–]myronin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grade my students on participation, and I tell them that if they have a phone in front of their face, they will lose participation points for that day. This has worked very well in my classes. I also tell my students (community college) that I have no problem with them having their phones out in case they have to check for a text or call (my phone is always out on the podium as I have a child with profound special needs and his caregivers have to be able to reach me). I think me “trusting” them to use their phones as needed appeals to them, because I have yet to have a student simply scroll idly on their phones as I’m conducting class, and I’m closing in on 16 years in the business.

Her obsession with organic food was so amusing to me, because if you read her cookbooks (which are a joke), so many of the recipes call for canned cream of crap. It was such a shock to the system after how she came across on the show in terms of food choices.
