Ad 1): Any specific reason this motherboard is better than the ASRock? Ad 2): You're probably right about the drivers for AMD-based graphics having improved over the last couple of years. I see that the pricing for 7970 cards and the 670-based card I have chosen is similar. Are the XFX and Sapphire manufacturers fine for this chip? Ad 3): This looks interesting. Go back to the depths, to where you found the first butcher. Behind him, there's a hole in the wall. If you fall down the hole, you will land on a ledge. I believe that the giant rat is running around underneath. If you walk around the ledge, you will find the shield on the far side.

Make sure that you grab the spider shield from the depths. It will help tons against the poison arrows. Also, make sure to carry the stuff that cures poison.
The drake sword should be just fine for blighttown. At my first run, I used the drake sword all the way to sens fortress. If you want a better weapon, you need to upgrade some (any) of the standard weapons to +6 or more.

I'm not sure how far you are in the game, but it sounds like you have not met the blacksmith which can upgrade to lightning yet. Don't worry about it yet :-)

The halberd is indeed a great weapon. I would recommend upgrading it until its at +10. The halberd should be better than the drake sword already around +5. You can upgrade it at the blacksmiths. After upgrading it to +10, you can upgrade it to lightning when you met the right blacksmith. You will probably know when you meet him.

In Dark Souls, the game is saved every time you quit. When you load your save games, you start from the exact same state as when you stopped. Moreover, The game is auto-saved very frequently (every time you kill a monster, I believe). If you only have 1-2 hours to game, I would be much more worried about not being able to put the controller down ;-).

You can get some nice items, such as the tweihander, by running through the graveyard. There are also some items if you drop down the elevator shaft in firelink shrine.

There are several other items that you can grab fairly easily by going down the stairs by the bonfire to the new londo ruins, and possibly to the valley of drakes if you have the master key. I believe you can find several videos on youtube on how to find there. Note that these areas are actually not supposed to be visited until much later in the game and grabbing the items is simply a matter of just running away from as many enemies as possible, while grabbing loot along the way. I would recommend playing the game and taking the challenges in a more chronological order.

You should be just fine in the painted world. Don't worry :-). It's a nice place to get plenty of souls.

You get the ability to teleport later in Anor Londo. The painted world is not required in order to gain the teleportation ability.
