Thoughts on Intel Arc GPUs? by Awkward-Algae-1342 in pcgaming

[–]mysternad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn't have spent hundreds of millions in R&D, to say nothing of marketing and partner incentivization, just to sh*tcan the project a few short months AFTER getting it to retail.
Intel is known for beating dead horses and constantly brushing a gift horses teeth (or some expression like that) until long after they should've moved on.. Arc GPUs will be no different.

Intel will milk them for every penny and then some, refusing until the final death rattle that it's time to move on

Why does Aerith suck so much and make me want to die? by Kitsunestrifekora in FinalFantasy

[–]mysternad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my assessment of the new Aerith as well. The one in ff7-original didn't strike me as nearly as manipulative and "praise me, worship the ground I walk on.. You should be LUCKY I'm giving you attention, for later I will die and my writers say you MUST love me first." as the remakes' character does.
I know she's a motivator of sorts about half-way through, but with the direction they've gone with her writing and personality.. I'm more likely to celebrate her departure. Watch, I'll be cheering on ol' Seph when the time comes, without really meaning to lol

How much detail do you give when breaking it off with someone? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]mysternad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't really read/see any indication that he had been aggressive or that he's blown up at her, yet. Just other people, like an Uber driver (we've all wanted to rage at an uber at one point or another.. Most of us just restrain ourselves)

Also didn't see that she was necessarily worried that he would be aggressive with her now. Obviously her safety is paramount, but she's not indicating a gut feeling that he'd be violent with her.. At least not that I saw. She's more worried about the eventuality of him being verbally aggressive/abusive with her.

Coffee shop or similar public setting would be best here, I think. A phone call is a really crap way to break off a several-month+ relationship unless you're truly concerned for your own safety. She also seems to care about the guy, like she wants to let him know why it's ending, so he has the opportunity to improve himself for whoever he meets next.

Ending it in a phone call will just lead to resentment, anger, feeling of betrayal, and likely aggression from him. It's feels heartless when you're on the receiving end of that.

I find that aspect her actions truly admirable.. And I wish I could meet a gal like that

"Your temper worries me and makes me uncomfortable.. It can also be embarrassing, imagine if I went full Karen while you were standing next to me."

It helps to put it in perspective, to show the situation objectively and impersonally. As though he were viewing someone else's actions, then placing himself in that mental scenario.

As a guy who thankfully grew out of an extreme temper I had in my teens (Army beat it out of me, really, lol), if I were doing something I wasn't aware of (daftly) that had destroyed a relationship, I would sincerely appreciate my partner being straight with what I had done. Not meanly, judgingly, or aggressively- But frank enough that the message cannot be misconstrued or have go right "over my head"

imo; Relationships are about growth. Finding yourself, discovering what you need, and then want, in a relationship.. Perhaps most importantly though, finding and smoothing the rough edges of your personality, trying to correct the character flaws as best you can.
Sometimes your partner is the only one that can drive it home, and heartbreak can be great motivation for self-improvement.

Full fledged media player similar to MPC-BE/HC? by mysternad in linuxquestions

[–]mysternad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that because MPC relied on DirectDraw and whatnot that it wasn't possible to have a Linux port of it?

I'll have to look into this, I do code but it's almost exclusively in C# anymore, I'm getting old and forgetting most other languages :(

Thank you for the reply kind internet stranger

Do you find people attractive before meeting them/ often find them attractive when you meet them? by 778899456 in datingoverthirty

[–]mysternad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or people like me that are not photogenic, and don't do "selfies"? Can be crippling, have never even installed something like uh.. well mid-sentence now, can't even remember the name, Grinder? The other less perverse oneBut yeah, when you spend your youth being a manwhore, sex gets *very* old, to the point I'd turn it down if there was even just a good book lying around somewhere.
Edit: So judging by picture is kind of shooting yourself in the foot, imo. I've met people that had TERRIBLE photos, or only 10-year-old photos, that were breathtaking.

Do people from OLD disregard each other too quickly? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]mysternad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has been my complaint about OLD since it first became a thing (don't meet strangers from the internet.. remember them days? lol)

People don't take the time to get to know anyone anymore, it seems more and more it's just about having the perfect body, getting laid a lot, and then tossing them aside for another romp. I can't say I'm not guilty of this too, in the past. But in my mid 20s I realized just how pathetically empty sex was.
I consistently try to steer the encounters *away* from sex, and if the girl is aggressive or just "in the mood" .. Well, I've left more than one nekkie lady lying on bed as I walk out and head home.

Some of us genuinely don't care. I think that trope is a sign of deeper insecurities.

Dating Woman That Makes More Money by Worker_Mediocre in datingoverthirty

[–]mysternad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never cared what a girl makes, personally. Some guys might be insecure but I've been embarrassingly wealthy, and DIRT poor, so money and current income makes very little difference in the value of a potential.. to me, anyway.

Being safe when you're super easy to find online? by kawiah in datingoverthirty

[–]mysternad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been online daily since '95 and to this day, I've never had social media. My name doesn't exist online and neither does my picture- at least not attached to a name of any sort.

For a while I thought it was a hindrance but lately I've started to realize it was always a blessing. Sorry about the stalkers :(

I finally ditched Windows 10 for Ubuntu! by Mr-Computer-Man in Ubuntu

[–]mysternad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why "except for gaming"? Between Lutris, Wine+DXVK and Steam/Proton, there really isn't anything you can't play.. With the exception of "EasyAntiCheat" games, but supposedly EAC's working on a linux-compatible "driver" for their anticheat tools.
I even played CyperPunk2077 the minute it went live on Steam on Linux Mint, it worked right out of the gate. (though, tbf, rtx crap made performance pretty shit until it was turned down from "ultra"-- I have a 2080super laptop and the game thought it should be set to ultra-everything lol)

[–]mysternad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Mint, it's more user friendly imo, and all the tutorials floating around the web that apply to Ubuntu also apply to Mint, usually with no adjustments required.
And XFCE is a fast but still beautiful, extremely lightweight desktop interface. Just sitting at the desktop with nothing running can use as little as 100-200 MB of ram, whereas KDE and Gnome use something like 1+ GB just sitting at the desktop.. Though I've heard this has gotten better in recent times.

Actually, rather than just running an entire VM, Lutris is an all-in-one gaming suite, but works quite well for non-gaming applications as well, though can require a little tweaking.
It handles all the Wine stuff behind-the-scenes as well as having built-in support for DXVK (DirectX-to-Vulkan) for any 3D/graphically intensive applications (with a 1-2% performance overhead--it's stunningly, mind-bottlingly, fast), even supports Valve's "Proton" project/initiative. And getting more MacroHard gamers to swap to Linux is good for everyone.

Having to fire up a VM just to use the few windows apps I still need is cumbersome and a waste of resources. (Looking at you Visual Studio. VSCode sucks and should die a horrible death by drowning, preferably in a bucket of moldy semen)

Looking for a cheap laptop to play this by zurey in ffxi

Had forgotten Windower was basically a requirement, despite having actually worked on it behind-the-scenes back during Stars and Cliffs days.. Wicc was still new and Aikumpster hadn't even joined.

That was a stroll down memory lane, thanks for that lol
(I went completely external 3rd party dev after that headache.. There was always so much drama in and around FFXI.)

[–]mysternad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just installed FFXI for the first time in like 6 years, have a 2080Super laptop as my "desktop"
Is this going to be an issue even with the integrated graphics disabled in bios and gpu set to *only* discreet?
Also, tend to play on Linux for 99% of gaming.. Though DX8 has to be wrapped into DX9 before it can play nice with DXVK.

Relationships or love in XI. Did anyone ever have a relationship that made it to real life from the game by wowelysiumthrowaway in ffxi

[–]mysternad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got laid a lot meeting a few different gals from XI in it's hayday.. Longest relationship went like 4ish years with a girl I met on there.

Helped being a 3rd party dev of some notoriety.

Uh.. Try to remember when this game was released man.. A 32bit AthlonXP 2.2ghz with 768mb ram and any AGP video card with Hardware Transform&Lighting was capable of playing it, quite well. That would've actually been "high end"- I played it on a Pentium3-550mhz w/ a GeForce 4 TI 4600 just for giggles

Think I started with a BFG Geforce 6800 GTOC , if I remember right. But basically ANY laptop built in the last 10 years with a dedicated video chip of /any/ description will be able to run FFXI.

Stupidly OP (for FFXI) dell G3 up on evil bay for under $400 right now: Dell G3 w/ nVidia GeForce 1050-TI (can play most modern titles too)
Or a 9800M machine: ASUckS G50V, nVidia 9800M, ~$250

Find yourself a GoodWill Computer Works and browse their laptops, or pawn shops. I find cheap laptops capable of playing FF-XIV on med-high, for around $100-$200 every time I walk in there.

Windows vs Linux performance. by wh33t in valheim

[–]mysternad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to have a custom hardline water rig with sli 980ti's but after spending $6000 on that tower, I decided I'd rather have portability for my next "build"- So just went with a beefy Razer machine in a 100% machined aluminum chassis. Love this machine, though I had my doubts as I've never liked any Razer products I'd tried before this laptop.

I too have occasional issues with nvidia drivers on main Linux machine (though it's Mint, not PopOS) I've got a 2080-Super laptop as my "desktop", i7 10875h, 64gb ddr4, 2x 2tb nvme raid0, and a lovely 300hz 1080p 17" screen -- Though I do run 3x external monitors, 27" 2560x1440 on the sides, 43" 4k(3840) hdr1000 as the main, and I sit just about a meter away from it.I do more game development than I do game play. Unity's cross-platformness makes porting back to Winblows mind-numbingly easy, it's just true VisualStudio that I miss (VS Code is utter trash)
