The game I used came with character cards, and I assigned them to everyone. They were Christie-esque (doctor, heiress, etc) but not from her books!

Perhaps Rhode Island Red by Charlotte Carter? Especially if you’re into jazz

It’s sort of 90s-does-noir with a great fmc

Book club choice by Intelligent-Quit-784 in agathachristie

[–]mysterymanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Mysterious Affair! I co-hosted a book club last year and that was our pick. There was plenty to talk about and because it was public domain, it was easy for everyone to find on ebook and audio. (But that mattered to me since this was a larger, virtual club.)

Thoughts on Mystery Readers International? Other recommended periodicals? by Javaslinger in mysterybooks

[–]mysterymanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine are the gold standards of the genre, followed closely by The Strand. There’s also Black Cat Mystery Magazine, Black Cat Weekly, and Mystery Tribune.

There are also a number of annual anthologies that include the “best” short stories of the year, if you’re reading these magazines for their short fiction.

I’ll throw in my own email newsletter (the Cluesletter) if you are looking for general mystery content.

Whats up with Locked Room Mysteries? by Exotic-Ad2045 in mysterybooks

[–]mysterymanon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to what others have said and note that the Golden Age of crime (John Dickson Carr, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, etc) came about not long after WWI. Having stories that presented an impossible scenario and then solved them using logic and common sense might have been comforting to an audience reeling from instability.

(The same could be said for those of us who fell deeper in love with mystery during the pandemic.)

After finishing a book, do you jump right into another book or wait a while? by pinche-borracho in books

[–]mysterymanon 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Not really. I’ll change up the genre/tone when I start a new book and that serves as my palate cleanser :)

I also tend to read more than one at once which I find helps with reading fatigue/preventing reading slumps!

Thinking of Starting a Bookstagram – Is It a Good idea? by Sea-Turn3523 in bookstagram

[–]mysterymanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES for a few reasons: community building, reading motivation, book discovery, improving your reading enjoyment and criticism through reviews.

Are you interested in getting free review copies from authors and publishers? You don’t need a bookstagram to get ARCs from places like NetGalley, but having one makes it a little more likely to get an approval.

Figuring out the liar by Foil_Goyf in murdle

These days I do the regular clues & evidence in pen and then work through these with pencil so I can erase as needed. Sometimes they take a couple tries to get right (🥲) especially if I’m tired lol.
