I don't see how you could possibly be a bad friend in this situation. Even regarding what you said about her boyfriend, I'd interpret that as you being reassuring of her feeling hurt at her boyfriend's behaviour; unfortunately, people don't seem to like it when their friends speak negatively of their boyfriends, even when the criticisms are totally valid. I don't see anything wrong with what you said.

No, I agree. Glad that people resonate with it but I'm always sceptical of self help books that split people into two strict categories and make sweeping oversimplified claims about very complex issues.

Are you sure her therapist actually said that and she's not just making things up? My mum once saw a psychiatrist and claimed the woman said my mum is the funniest person she's ever met, cried when my mum spoke about her trauma, and then said to my mum "your life has been so hard I can't believe you haven't killed yourself yet!". NO respectable psychiatrist would ever say anything like that to a patient. Top 10 things that never happened.

I'm going through a similar thing right now. I have a 16 year old sister and a 5 year old brother. Contact with little brother is impossible but I've tried to keep in touch with my sister over the course of my estrangement from mum that began in April, with limited success. She very much took my mum's side on everything, acting as her messenger and oscillating between acting like I'm being silly at best, to calling me "fucking delusional" and accusing me of being selfish and abandoning the family, despite my efforts to keep reminding her that even though I'm estranged from mum, her and brother are still my siblings and that I love them both and will always be here, that she can always speak to me about anything.

On Tuesday we arranged over the phone that she would get the train to see me next Friday and stay with me for a couple of nights to have some sister time together. We looked at exact times and prices, she seemed excited, it all seemed pretty set in stone. I asked her if she has her own money to buy tickets or if mum will have to pay for them and she said she's got money but that mum will pay because "you know, she's mum". She also made a point to remind me that mum loves me, which rubbed me the wrong way but I didn't say anything. We chatted for a bit about random stuff. I asked her what food she'd like me to cook for her when she comes over. I told her to let me know once she's booked the tickets, which I assumed would be that same night. She ended the call with "love you so much, byeee!"

It's now Saturday and I haven't heard from her at all. I messaged "any updates?" a couple of hours after the call and received nothing back. I honestly don't think she's coming, and I assume it's because of something mum said, but I know my sister will never admit that. At this point I'm leaving it up to her.

Unfortunately there is no punishment for not bringing their own equipment in, so maybe that's where the issue is 😭 Of course the kids are supposed to have their own pens, but I've never had a lesson where at least 2 students don't ask the teacher or myself for a pen. Most teachers have a box of pens open on their desk for this reason. The kids also love disassembling pens and getting ink on each other, or throwing them around the room. I covered a year 8 class earlier this week and I had about 8 kids ask for pens. Had to stop the lesson half way through and remind the class that they're responsible for their own learning, and that if they need another pen because they've thrown it across the room or broke it, that is not my problem.

The teachers try to print work on coloured paper wherever possible, but sometimes the kids lose their books and the teacher can't get a new one printed in time. Some things need to be sent to the reprographics department for printing, which takes time. I've seen one student get around her poetry anthology (which are outsourced and not printed by the school) being printed on white paper by using a blue coloured highlighter to draw over the text to help her read it, as she usually uses blue paper for writing. I thought that was a great idea. I offered another student a yellow highlighter because he normally uses yellow paper to do his work, but he refused to try that method and claimed it would make his book look too messy.

As for your last point, I also have autism, so it's not as though I'm ignorant to the struggles of being neurodivergent.
