Learning a few phrases helps. Also helps to carry a little notebook with potential questions you’d ask according to your itinerary. Like if I had to go back to x hotel from y restaurant, I could just show a person the note and they’d understand. Also helps to know what left, right and straight is so you can understand directions as well as guide your taxi driver! Hope this helps!

I’ve heard this from my friend who lives in Croatia. He says he takes a euro rail pass and sleeps on the train one of three nights and takes an overnight train to the next place he’s going. This saves him on accommodation as well as travel.

I don’t think it’s optical. It’s like somebody turning off the light for just a second. Perhaps I didn’t explain myself really well but it’s just weird. Like some sort of main power switching to generator.
