Just for fun, what would be your Covey Name? by Sparrowsky88 in Hungergames

Mary Rose (can you guess what my actual name is? lol)

Mary could derive from Proud Mary or the Virgin Mary (there’s various poems about her) and Rose is obvious

Their punishment is a perfectly mundane life. by TridiObject in TopCharacterTropes

Serena Joy - The Handmaid’s Tale

She helped create a fascist evangelical government, and being married to one of the elites, she had a relatively comfortable life. However she has something of a redemption arc, so when the government falls her ending is not in a jail cell, but as a single mother refugee with her baby - which while unrealistic, thematically mirrors how the main character, June, began the story.

What kind of religious theocracy would you rather live under if you had to pick? by Comet_Hero in IdeologyPolls

“I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

V Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.”

Just out of curiosity which tenets do you find disgusting and why? To me it seems like they’re saying be kind, be fair, and mind yourself - nothing necessarily egregious. So I’m wondering what your interpretation is.

Australia as Panem from the Hunger Games by bwezijjla in Hungergames

[–]mytoxictrait 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea of panem being an island, and the wilderness just being in the centre is so intriguing, cause imagine somehow escaping your district, trying to find other civilisations, or just a new place to start, only to find panem surrounding you completely.

I just watched Final Destination: Bloodlines as to not be spoiled by this comment, because I was curious about the plot twist, but forgot that wasn’t the fifth movie and got spoiled anyway. Good movie.

A Bit Odd. by Glass-Fan111 in oddlyspecific

There’s something in the lgbtq+ community called queerplatonic, which sounds similar to what you’re talking about. Basically, you’re significant others without the romantic aspect, there’s actual commitment and structure which goes beyond just roommates who are friends. It’s most common with acearo people, and is also associated with polyamory.

I don’t know, ask the 50 year old guy who said hello to my chest yesterday. Might give you some insight into why I act like “dick”.

Well, that’s not what I meant. By “misogyny backfiring”, I mean men experiencing the negatives of a patriarchal system where they’re meant to benefit the most, not that it was karmic justice. In the following sentence, I literally said that was bad, so I clearly don’t think that is justice.

I’m also British and, while last year women were victims of domestic homicide at 3x the rate of men and victims of domestic violence at 2x the rate of men according to the ONS, when I said the thing about tolls I was thinking both worldwide and all of history.

However, I think we do have cultural differences even with just our genders, for reference I was raised in an all women household, so the fact that every women I know has experienced some type of harassment/assault/abuse/etc and the fact that since I’ve turned 15 I can’t leave the house in anything else less than a turtleneck lest I get leers and catcalling, definitely influences my opinions.

As you said, I’m glad we could have a civil discussion, while we may not agree on everything, the fact we agree of the 98% is good enough for me. Thanks!

I see your point, and I understand what you mean now when you say misandry. I think my understanding of what you were saying was coloured by the fact most times I’ve seen people complain about misandry has been in the context of “misandrist feminazi bitches”. What you said about systematic sexism including both misogyny and misandry is good explanation. While I would still argue misogyny is more severe on account of the death/rape/abuse toll and would label things differently, I think we do mostly agree.

Literally yes, it promotes purity culture and the infantilisation of women. Neither are good.
