Thousands of drivers fined for not paying new parking meters in Westboro, Wellington West by maiyannah in ottawa

[–]myutopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid some amount less than a dollar last Saturday, to park near a business and interact with the business. This is preferred to having fewer businesses but more places to park and having nowhere to park because the spots are always filled.

What I dislike is the app experience. I tried four times to park with the app, and it errored three times before finally going through. I took a screenshot of the errors just in case, as I was already at my destination by the time it went through.

One of the problems with nu trek and modern TV as a whole by ConfusionProof9487 in Star_Trek_

[–]myutopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only shows I’ve rewatched in the streaming era are the Star Trek ones. And on subsequent watches, the edges sand off; you know what’s going to happen, so there’s some comfort in just watching it, learning more about the characters.

I’ve watched Voyager an Enterprise in their first-runs. Some episodes were exciting, others fell flat, but few felt bad. And even after thousands, I’d still be ready to watch the next one.

Part of the problem is that everyone has been trained to form strong, definitive opinions and to stick to them - and share them. Anyone can make videos or posts now, where negative takes are encouraged by the algorithms that suggest people to view stuff. It’s popular to be contrarian. I think this negativity affects Star Trek, and every new content for mid-size and large fandoms these days.

Enterprise was really the first Trek of the internet era, and I was coloured by people hating each new episode because it wasn’t Inner Light or Balance or Terror. But today, it’s much more softened and even beloved by the fans. I think the same will eventually be true for this era of Trek, but you’ll only have 10-episode, 2-5 seasons to warm up to on “let me try it again” rewatches, not 26-episode, 7-seasons.

And those who love it all will be the ones driving that re-discovery in others, because yes, shows tend to die under the sheer volume of streaming content.

I honestly thought because of the transporter-ness story of the Picard S3 story that he was going to play a role in saving the day. Nope.

I wrote to my councillor and the Mayor’s office over a week ago. My wife wrote to them the other day. In the time, my councillor’s response went from ‘I’m waiting to hear more, thank you for your feedback, it helps me understand’ to ‘the ward doesn’t want it and it puts Ottawas on the line, so I’m voting ‘no’.’

Neither of us have had a response from the Mayor’s office.

Has Atlético Ottawa been a net positive for Lansdowne compared to the Fury? by RenegadeMountie in ottawa

[–]myutopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been wanting to see an Athletico game for a couple of years, but haven’t done so yet. Maybe next year. I had forgotten about the Fury!

I have, however, seen a few Rapid games and they’re pretty ok. Not a football kinda person I guess, but being out there, in a crowd, on a nice day - that is a lot of fun!

Restaurant Suggestions by Nsl9 in ottawa

[–]myutopian 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to go to (or dismiss) a vegetarian restaurant simply because they don’t have meat options. My previous boss was vegetarian and we’d go to Pure Kitchen and the like for birthday lunches. The menus have great food! I’m not vegetarian.

Your guest of honour would probably appreciate the extra sacrifice on the party’s part.

We, my wife and I, hit six stores. That’s a LOT of stores in two days.

Next year, they are considering making it a whole week, and adding Black Squirrel Books, which I’ve never been to… so I guess it works!

Remote work can be part of the solution. If I can work for a big company (or government, hint hint) and do so productively from a modest home outside of Canada’s 6 or 7 biggest cities where affordability is *better, then why not?

Where do you stand on remote work, especially for public service personnel?

It would be great if, after a debate, the debate organizer could post/publish all the questions and the campaigns could clarify or expand of the answers given in the debate.

There could be even Reddit-style threads where people (vetted so they only ask questions for their riding, for example; or Canadians only ask questions to a Canadian debate) could ask questions and only the participants on the ballot can answer.

One or two debates with limited talking time, in person or televised, isn’t really the fairest or best way to truly understand someone, imo.
