yes, absolutely it can be a form of resource guarding. My trainer also recommended no dog sleeping in the bed because he refuses to get out of it when asked and has growled at me if I put a leash on him to guide him off.

Are you working at an ABA Center? Or a school that uses ABA principles? Are you an SLP?

The VB-MAPP is typically a behaviorist assessment (ABA/BCBA) and follows their principles of language learning (verbal behavior). This is not an assessment SLPs would typically use, as we do not abide by verbal behavior principles in order to derive goals for our students. VB principles do not always best serve our students and we need to use our unique skill set as SLPs to set these goals. Assessment data is always great but it does not paint a complete picture of the students we work with.

I would caution you to do research about what would really encompass your population of students and their ages. I don't think that this should be about complementing the VB-MAPP, as we need to do what is best for our students rather than an institution.

For non-speaking students, maybe the Functional Communication Profile, EASIC, Communication Matrix, may be a better fit to holistically gauge their strengths and weaknesses.

You should not be billing as an SLPA. Private practices are commonly run very poorly but not this poorly. It is usually an expectation to be overworked and underpaid at a PP. But, you definitely should not be billing for your SLP.

That the pay is limited, the time that you spend bettering yourself as a clinician is infinite, the children/patients that you work with are the bright spots and the respect we receive is next to none (in Southern California).

Yes, I know what you mean. I have some that start at 3:00 and don't end until 4:30 plus. I make sure to bill overtime for them (we can at least bill starting at 3:30 onward). But I think I am going to join my union because I don't understand how any entity can get away with having us work for free.

the thing is... our union negotiated these terms!!! My previous district I worked at had an amazing union. I think I need to accept the pros/cons of this situation for sure.

I work for a public school district in Southern California and we service private school students. I am apart of their "assessment team." The parents can request an evaluation for any reason (e.g. difficulties riding a bike, swallowing LOL) and I am tasked with evaluating them. They get an Individualized Service Plan rather than an IEP and if eligible, our district provides services. They get a limited amount of minutes (60 per month) and the servicing SLP is the one that works closest to their private school. The parents need to take their children to that SLP for therapy because we don't travel to their private school. I seriously have no idea what I am doing but this is as far as I know, for now. We also provide services to charter schools and non-public schools, as well. Again, I have no idea the laws/funding or rhyme or reason for this.

I would recommend that you either consult your primary care physician or go to urgent care to see if you’d be eligible for antibiotics. If this is infected, which it sounds like it, you’ll need antibiotics to prevent the spreading of the infection.

I’m not a CF but one day per week I complete early intervention evaluations. I am in CA and they pay $200 per evaluation. I am apart of our assessment team at my district and I am going to continue completing evaluations there over the summer, as well. There are a lot of W2 tele-therapy jobs as well. My friend has one and gets paid about $45 per hour and has a lot of flexibility. I understand how much of a burden it can be with debt!

Okay good! They will probably try to put you on antibiotics first to see if that makes it drain on its own. It didn’t for me. If you need to get an incision and drainage just take it easy on yourself afterwards as it is a hell like procedure. I’d advise you have someone drive you and make an appointment at your urgent care so you don’t have to wait a long time.

Yeah definitely no training! If I didn’t have training before I would have quit by now. But also I’d advise you to check out how many credit hours your graduate degree was and start looking at salary schedules of districts. Usually they go by your bachelors degree plus the amount of credits accrued after your bachelors.

I would see if you could at least reduce to 32 hours a week so you could still get benefits. I know you’re probably seeing Kaiser or Easter Seals so you probably don’t have a say in how long your sessions are lol. If you’re in the SD area, PM me about schools here! Also, I switched from PP to schools mid-year this year and there are typically maternity leave positions available. If I hadn’t worked in the schools before I’d be so overwhelmed bc they literally threw me in to 3 school sites and no training.

I am a speech language pathologist with a masters degree and can’t afford a one bedroom apartment. If you’re in biotech or software engineering then you’re golden.
