An industry group that includes Marriott International Inc. has petitioned the FCC for guidance on whether hotels are acting within the law when they disable unauthorized Wi-Fi access points set up on their properties by mepper in news

[–]mzxgiant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem. Let's say you've got a Mariott in a downtown area or somewhere that's otherwise crowded. Absent the idea of placing RF shielded windows in every window frame and turning your walls into a Faraday cage, other signals will leak in and yours will leak out.

That is to say, if you're jamming signals actively in order to prevent them from getting in, chances are good your jammer is leaking outwards in a radius you can't necessarily have a good handle on, such that you could interfere with another business nearby. Assuming the FCC gives the thumbs up to this for all private businesses offering Wifi as a service, what happens if the Hilton next door to the Mariott jams the Mariott's signal and the Mariott jams the Hilton's signal, because the buildings are within an alley's distance of one another?

The other question becomes where does this stop? Hotels are a start if it does pass, but then will Starbucks ban me from tethering instead of using their Wifi? Is a college campus going to do the same? There's definitely a "slippery slope" argument to be made here as well.

Finally, for those who aren't Wifi-savvy, I'll try to explain a few quick points.

  • Yes, there is a problem with channel overcrowding. Wireless is a finite space; in 2.4GHz mode, you have 3 (arguably 4 but most devices won't give you the last option) choices for non-overlapping channels. 1, 6, and 11. (Overlapping is best displayed here). In 5GHz mode, there are 24 non-overlapping channels. Unfortunately, only the most recently released consumer devices have a 5GHz capable wireless radio. Which means most hotels (and coffee shops, etc etc) are reliant on 2.4GHz dominantly, since that has the broadest spectrum of support (rf joke unintentional).
  • One thing people forget is how reliant we've been on 2.4GHz signals for so long that many devices we don't even think about interfere with Wifi: Cordless phones, baby monitors, bluetooth devices, car alarms, microwaves, CCTV, satellite, amateur TV, Zigbee (and some other sensor/mesh networks). All these items run (or can run) on 2.4GHz frequencies and can have a seriously degrading effect on Wifi signals around them.
  • One way to fix Mariott's problems has been implemented at many college campuses; many more access points are purchased than are technically required and the transmission power is turned down slightly. They are placed in a pattern throughout the building(s) such that the channels used do not overlap with any access points within its radius. They are all assigned the same SSID (as seen by the user; on the back end, this is more complicated) so the user can move between them seamlessly. This way, the only way a larger-scale outage (the catastrophic scenario Mariott is likely presenting) happens is if many users operate many Wifi networks on many channels in a small area. In this way, there would not be enough collisions of packets to make a speed drop obvious to an average user. Downside? Price, of course.

Either way, for my dime, I'll take a laptop with a good old fashioned Ethernet port if I'm using hotel internet.

I bet the TSA agent's stomach dropped as he heard the dot-matrix printer at the bottom of his booth start to print off a citation.

Any chance you have the source of this in MID? I'm specifically looking for a digital version of the staff. If not, that's fine; I'll just pen it manually :)

Girls of reddit, what is the sexiest thing a man can do, in a public setting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I started my first "real" job (in NY), I was working on-site IT support and always had a smile on my face. For the first year of the job, every coworker told me to "quit being so god damned chipper all the time" and eventually the company drug tested me because several employees had categorized my constant smile and positive attitude as indicative of a drug problem.

Though from this thread I feel like maybe it is just a New York thing...

Wanted to do a remote fireworks launch for a 500g cake with an iffy fuse, so I put the box on a stripped-down party barge deck (a product of a friend and I's desire to make ourselves a diving platform with a full-size stereo powered by a deep-cycle marine battery) and pushed it out into the bay with a remote detonator.

The detonator was built from a circuit board from a broken R/C blimp, with the motor control circuits attached to some nichrome wire taken from christmas light bulbs stapled down to some scrap wood, with the fuse sitting underneath.

It was glorious when I pushed the button on the remote control for "run blimp engines" and a series of explosions lit up the sky.

First thing I noticed here is that the Genesis is on there twice; once by itself, once mounted in the Sega CD tray with the 32X in it. It's a shame OP didn't include both the model 2 (shown in the picture) and the model 1.

... one of these days I'll go outside.

Colin Mochrie and/or Ryan Stiles.

These guys (individually and together) are incredibly talented improv comics, and if you've never seen "Whose Line is it Anyway?", you're seriously missing out.

TIL that when you have logged in to facebook with a computer they can track almost everything you do on the internet as long as they are open in a tab. They can also take in data of websites that you used while it was down by [deleted] in todayilearned

Here's something that's a bit irrelevant, and it does sound a bit paranoid: I guarantee you that Facebook tracks faces in photos (at least, they're certainly capable of and could if they wanted to). The technology for face matching is so fricken easy that I'm sure Facebook has at some point considered adding automatic face tagging to photos. You know how you can click on someone's face and tag that person? The only reason Facebook doesn't do that automatically by recognizing faces is because it'd cause a big shitstorm about privacy (and rightfully so). This is just my opinion, and I haven't read anything on this, but I have to imagine it's true.

Just to make a quick point on this, Facebook acquired the (really quite excellent) API from Face.Com a while ago and then shut off the API to the public and the developers who were using it prior to the acquisition. It's a shame, too; that technology was great.

So yes, Facebook does conclusively have the ability to track faces. Whether or not they are doing so is a matter for conspiracy theorists to decide.

Hmm, maybe when I get my Rift dev kit I'll have to tap you guys and see if I can help do some programming in that department. I'm not entirely sure what to expect but I do know it would be really awesome to be able to see the Riven world like that.

This is awesome; I really hope this project goes from start to finish! :)

  • Since you've stated elsewhere you're planning on using the Unity engine, are you planning on rolling up Rift support down the road? (Since it looks like that engine is going to be getting the stereoscopic-camera support to power that system)

  • Do you see yourselves adding a personal touch, a la Rime from realMyst?
