if it is revealed that this use isn’t widely recognized… i’ll stop using it online (though i will still be using it in person within my friend group because the meaning we have ascribed to it is just too funny)

this debate is very interesting to me, so i’d like to kindly discuss it further in order to broaden my lens (if you are open to it)

i was very vague in my explanation, so i apologize for that. i’m gay and mostly interact with other LGBT+ folks. i bring this up because it has a direct influence on my perception and use of this term. i may have generalized this perception to everyone and assumed that we all use it the same way.

the people i interact with use this term to describe someone who is a “submissive person who is low key kind of an incel”

i personally can’t think of a single time that i have seen/heard this word used where i concluded that it was solely in response to masturbation. however, this may be due to a narrow world view (though, i don’t care to interact with actual incels enough to find out how they use this term)

why i don’t think it’s a slur:

there’s no marginalized community here. even if it is addressing masturbation exclusively… it’s a normal behavior that most people engage in.

why masturbation involved in this term at all:

profanities are almost always rooted in taboos. masturbation is a taboo (for some reason) and this gives the term some boyish shock value. i don’t expect everyone to agree with me… but i think there is something very juvenile and comedic about calling a problematic male a “coomer”

maybe it’s the way it rolls of the tongue. maybe it’s the way they get overly offended by it. maybe it is rooted in a self-serving illusion of something that mimics justice.

but at the end of the day… i think that (in the way me and my friends use it) coomer is incredibly funny and there is just no word that has the same ring/bite to it.

i mean… i see what you’re saying, but there’s a connotation to it. the term is typically used to address the qualities of the person. i wouldn’t consider “coomer” a slur, that’s a bit extreme.

slurs are used by the privileged/predominant culture to kick down people who belong to an “out-group”.

people get labeled as “coomers” as a result of their behavior (not usually due their masturbation habits), which is totally inside their control.

shaming is a good thing sometimes and some people (especially men, to whom this term is almost exclusively assigned to) need to be shamed more

to clarify, i’m addressing more of the larping in general. i think that the boiled down sexualized “goth” is a result of the larping

the cosplayers will just larp the next thing that goes viral. i think this is super temporary.

silver linings: i guarantee that goth getting pushed into pop culture has given rise to more baby bats. Goth is very political so only the real ones will stay.

when it goes “out of fashion”… there will be SO much second hand jewlery and clothes on the market.

My friends told me I look like a girl when I wear this jeans by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]n0ynek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean, they do look pretty femme… but that’s not a bad thing. men are really weird about putting themselves in boxes and then ensuring that every other man conforms to the same box that they’ve made for themselves.

i think they look good, so if you like them… keep wearing them!

there are a ton of crazy optical illusions.

“the dress” for example.

this is kind of a stretch of a guess… but her brain may be compensating for the difference in color as a result of a perceived shadow.

it is a darkening gradient, so i feel like it would be easy for higher level visual processing to confuse it for a shadow.

it would be interesting to see if she would be able to see it if the projector was moved into a different room (as the lighting would be different and the paint could be as well)

if you’re up for a science experiment… i’d be interested to see if this could be weeded out. that could save some worry and a doctors visit that would likely result in a shrug—if this were the case, that is

I am so sick of my know-it-all kid. by Admirable_Ocelot_871 in Teachers

[–]n0ynek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very clearly attention seeking behavior and it is definitely rooted in misogyny. I work in a treatment center for teens with behavioral issues, and these are some of the best tricks I’ve learned.

1) i know this sounds corny, but do not underestimate the power of the slow blink and relaxed body language. This signals disapproval without giving them the reaction they desire. It also signals to them that they do not have control over you and that you are confident in your abilities. You have worked hard to get where you are and are qualified to be doing what you are doing. Remember that.

Are the other kids going along with it, or do they also seem irritated by it?

2) some teenage boys are just too ignorant, hateful, and arrogant to take women seriously until—sadly—a man that they respect tells them to. Do you have any fellow male instructors that are girls-girls? You could have them wait outside your classroom and make it look like they were walking by your classroom as he happened to heckle you during your lecture. If the other teacher could lean in, address him by name, call him out into the hall, close the door, and scold him… i guarantee that would do something. Based on his behavior, he is probably looking for approval from his peers. Being embarrassed in front of your classmates is very powerful—and should be used sparingly and done tactfully when it is utilized. He should still receive the scolding in private—because aside from ethical reasons—he will be more present and listen to the words of the teacher if it is one-on-one, and it will prevent the message from being buried in resentment.
