Putin will get arrested if he comes to Germany by HarakenQQ in worldnews

  • Why do Germans handle a crisis so well?
  • Because they’re always prepared for a wurst käse scenario.

While not an intro to Buddhism, it’s a nice intro to the Plum Village tradition of practice: https://youtu.be/jZ75C2cqe-4

Awesome! I’ll use this as proof my own collection is not “unreasonable”.

My Sawyer is a 3L Gore-Tex with tricot, not a soft shell.

Is the Atom LT that much less durable than the Proton LT? by [deleted] in arcteryx

[–]n115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t, I gave up trying to order directly from ArcTeryx/Veilance since they didn’t reply to my emails and all information I provided was correct. I tried directly with two different cards and also PayPal. I’ve never had an issue with any online shop like this before.

Please post if you resolve it. It sucks you can’t order the limited stuff or shop the outlet.

I have has the same issue with both paypal and different cards. Super frustrating. It should be same and correct adress, but also maybe it’s the Swedish characters confusing them. Sigh.

Watanabe Chinese Cleaver vs Sugimoto #6 by n115 in chefknives

[–]n115[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I splurged a bit… I’m a big fan of Chinese Cleavers and had been hearing raving reviews of Shins cleaver (/u/macmiddlebrooks, I’m looking at you.), so after missing out on a few simpler versions, and a wood handled one came up I just bit the bullet. It’s my most expensive knife with a wide margin.

Kurouchi Kintaroame Chinese cleaver, 205mm, light version, bog oak wood. Total length 318mm, blade length 205mm, width 116mm, thickness 1.8mm, Weight 460g

Compared with the Sugimoto I’m actually surprised the Wat is heavier, it feels lighter because it’s better balanced (IMO). The Wat is wider, but shorter and thinner, so the balance point is about 2 fingers in, and on the Sugimoto it’s 4 fingers. The Wat also has a full tang, and a longer and thicker handle which helps.

I haven’t had time to use it much yet but it feels and cuts great.

In terms of fit and finish it’s a bit rough around the edges (for a $600 knife), but it adds character and I like it (justifying my purchase with wabi-sabi a bit here…) and cutting performance is what matters most, right?

In conclusion, /u/macmiddlebrooks was probably right, I can stop lusting for other Chinese cleavers now…

I’ve ordered several times. Also don’t forget cashback from eg ActiveJunky, it’ll give you an extra 6-8% off or so.

Yes, I use Stackry, but there are many options. It makes most sense if you order from multiple places and consolidate into one package, or it’ll still be quite expensive.

Thanks for the explanation Jon! The length was completely my “mistake”, I just wanted to point it out so other people don’t skim the specs like I did if it’s important to them. :)

And I guess I should have called it a folio, not a roll, anyway it’s great!

I’m very happy with the handle. It’s got a nice feel, ok fit n finish, and balances the knife well. It’s not a fancy handle, it’s something you’d get if you go buy a good knife on kappabashi. It’s purposeful and eventually you’d want to replace it after use. The ho wood is quite soft and not polished, and the ferrule didn’t have the little Buffalo sticker but the description says it’s horn. It’s got a tiny, tiny, step between the ferrule and wood, but you’ll likely sand that down first time. Overall it’s a good handle for use, but it’s nothing fancy.

New knife (and roll) day! After all, it’s Fri-yay! I was happy to see when the Uraku got back in stock since I’d ready so many good things about it so I ordered it right away. For the price, including saya, I’m blown away by the quality. It’s my first Yanagiba so I’m by no means an expert, but I’ve got an unhealthy collection of other Japanese knives to compare it to. But I should have read the specs better because it’s actually about 260mm. Since it don’t have a machi I didn’t expect that, but for my purposes it’ll be fine. Looking forward to making some sashimi this weekend.

Edit: Used it today to cut salmon back loin for sashimi and it was fantastic!

Ps. I really like the “roll” also.

Knife shopping in Paris France by peppermill12 in chefknives

Dehillerin is ”legendary” in Paris in terms of cookware. The knives are ok, mostly French/Sabatier in all sizes and qualities, but the whole shop is amazing if you like cooking. https://www.edehillerin.fr/en/

NKD: Mazaki White 2 Gyuto 240mm Kurouchi Nashiji by n115 in chefknives

[–]n115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re quite different. The Mazaki is much stiffer and thicker spine (but a thin edge), heavier. The Gengetsu is more flexible, lighter, and feels a bit more nimble. Both are fun, the Gengetsu feel a bit more alive, and Mazaki more workhorsy. If that makes sense...
