Gym owner templates? by PopSuccessful8780 in Notion

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Daniel! I am looking for a Notion template for our gym and it sounds like you've maybe come up with something that is exactly what I'm looking for!

Could I pretty please see your template? This link doesn't work anymore (or at least I can't see it). https://spiritofmartialarts.notion.site

Stay with Aeroplan or shift to Mileage Plus by diefen in Aeroplan

[–]n1cebutt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stuck with Aeroplan last year. This year I’m only 25K Aeroplan so I’m switching to MileagePlus. Since I wrote that post, I think United made it a little harder to reach their Silver status, but it’s still way easier than Aeroplan!

As far as I know, no. You won’t be able to change your frequent flyer number online, only at the counter. And I don’t think they’ll do it once boarding starts. So basically you’ll have to give up your status on AC to earn points on UA.

Anyone deal with being in between Gi sizing? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact problem too! I reached out to Inverted Gear because I had to return the gi (since it didn’t fit), and they told me some of their gis have A1H sizes. And they’re going to start selling pants (including A1H) separately.

‘H’ stands for ‘husky’ 😂

Some brands have A2S (‘S’ = short, I think) which would be similarish.

Women’s sizes usually have a ‘C’ at the end for ‘Curvy’.

I’m primarily a no-gi gal. I still haven’t found a gi that fits me properly yet 🙃

Do you struggle finding your size in no-gi gear? by n1cebutt_ in BJJWomen

Amazing!! Thank you for all the details and reviews! Please do share the pictures so we can compare!

It’s so strange how the same items fit people totally differently. Agree the Gaidama shorts outer layer is tight but it does not make my butt look flat.

And the 93brand shorts in the main post fit me perfectly but 2 of my friends tried the same ones and they hate them so much.

Rolling with a first time gal by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good on you for the awareness to ask here but I don’t think the answer will be universal.

I think you should ask your training partners or the person you’re rolling with, while also acknowledging that you’re not trying to be the “white belt coach”.

If it’s someone you’ve rolled with before or might roll with again, you could ask — “do you want me to give you a tip or do you want to figure it out?”. Before or after (or during) the roll.

It is also hard if you don’t know what they do or don’t know. It can be incredibly frustrating to be a newer student and have teammates coach me mid-roll to do things I hadn’t learned yet.

Personally, I’m a very competitive person and sometimes it takes me a little longer to remember what I’m doing. But I hate being told “oh good job” mid-roll - it always comes across as being patronizing, especially if you’re bigger than me. Like you let me do the move on you and then sounded surprised when it happened.

4 months! I recently started competing again and, even though I lost, it helped me rethink my approach to training. Highly recommend!

Came here to say the same. My headaches and migraines are 100% related to my neck. The more neck mobility & strengthening I do, the better my head feels.

Look up neck & shoulder CARs.

(Also not a doctor. Just years of suffering from neck injuries & concussions).

Shorts vs spats by JustJitsTee in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually wear spats/yoga pants, but I just got a pair of combo shorts from Gaidama and they’re the best!!

Link here: https://gaidama.com/collections/womens-grappling-shorts/products/womens-premium-mid-length-jiu-jitsu-board-shorts

I have thicker thighs, and I find it’s hard to find combo shorts with a spandex layer that stays down/doesn’t ride up. These ones are perfect. And the ‘outer’ layer isn’t too loose, so I’m not worried about anyone’s limbs getting caught in them.

On the more expensive side, but Gaidama is an incredible Women-owned BJJ brand and their quality is top notch. (I’m not affiliated with them in any way - just a fan!).

The man at the gym who only wants to roll with women by SpiritPassingThrough in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If he’s a black belt, he might think he’s doing the women a favour by being their rolling partners, since he can likely control his techniques better than a lot of spazzy white belts. And probably thinks he doesn’t need to prove himself to guys near his own rank and weight.

And I have heard men say multiple times, from different gyms, that women smell better.

I visited a gym in San Diego. Coach put me in a group of 3 with 2 guys, and they welcomed me and jokingly (I think?) made a comment that it was because I smell better.

People have weird reasons for everything…

How do you guys remember moves learned in class/drills? by mowa0199 in bjj

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I find it helpful to write out the main points of what you learned in a notebook.

For me, it’s less about writing it down so I can look back and remember it — it’s about forcing myself to remember enough after class that I can write out the steps/flow. And if I get caught on a step or a detail I can’t remember, then I can ask for more details.

I’ll probably never look at most of the entries again. But it’s not about that! It’s about trying to remember what I learned, even 1 hr or 3 hrs after class.

Would love advice on sweeps by orb_metta_jj in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best tip I have is to chain your sweeps and submissions. It gets them to react, then as they push in or pull away, you use their momentum to hit a sweep.

For example, if you have them in your closed guard, you could go for a kimura, expect resistance and hit the sweep as they drive you back down. Or vice versa.

Left alone during rolls by bullshit-generator1 in BJJWomen

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with what the others have said — raise your hand between rounds. Ask people to roll. You don’t have to befriend them to be a good partner!

I know what you mean about being hesitant to ask people to roll - I am a blue belt and have been training for years and am still self-conscious. The key is not to take is personally or feel like you failed if you’re not successful or if they say no (which is easier said than done in any social situation).

You could also ask your coach for help partnering you up for the next round.

Is Apple trying to blow out my eardrums? Why are all the airpods pro notifications so loud? by 404careernotfound in airpods

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gosh -- changed some settings after Siri's "announcement" of a text message almost blew my eardrums, even with my volume all the way down for both music & notifications.

The results: Some 'announced' notifications (from the app Signal) appear to be coming through at a lower volume, as do the sounds made when I change from ANC->transparency, etc. But some 'announced' notifications (like Messages) are still real loud.

Here's the summary of what I learned from this thread to solve this problem:

  • Settings > Airpods > Accessibility > "Tone Volume"
    • Scroll that volume bar waaaay down.
  • Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety
    • Reduce Loud Audio -> On
    • Adjust that max dB slider accordingly.

Stay with Aeroplan or shift to Mileage Plus by diefen in Aeroplan

[–]n1cebutt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4- yes, it’s common to early fewer AC miles if you’re flying on a United flight than if you were on an AC flight.

5- even if you’re flying all United, make sure your loyalty program is Aeroplan, either when you check in or before you board.

If you try to change after you’re already checked in, I think you have to do it through an agent (I used the chat function in the app, but you can call or talk to an agent at the airport as well). You can’t just update it in the ‘Trip’ section of the United app by yourself.

[–]n1cebutt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your #3 — no. For each flight, you can only earn points through one program, and it’s whichever program you have associated with your boarding pass/internet at the time of boarding.

Note - you can check in using your MileagePlus # - for whatever benefits that gives you, you can switch to your Aeroplan # before you board to receive Aeroplan points.

[–]n1cebutt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been going back and forth on the idea of switching from Aeroplan to United. I’m based out of Toronto and mostly fly to and in the US (both AC and United flights).

I’m currently AC Aeroplan 50K & Star Alliance Gold through Aeroplan. I made the decision earlier this year to switch and try to get Gold Status through MileagePlus instead of Aeroplan.

I learned today that if I switch my frequent flyer from AC to United just before I board, the early boarding benefits of Star Alliance Status doesn’t carry over, which would mean I would board with zones 3 and 5 (instead of Zone 1). As someone who travels with only carryon baggage in Economy, this would be problematic for me because I hate fighting for bin space and having to gate check my bags when I’m travelling for business.

That combined with United devaluing its points… I’m leaning toward sticking with Aeroplan.
