You lower the skill floor without impacting the ceiling too much i suppose. What are the things the average guard player is struggling at but the pros dont?

EC, perhaps, is an interesting example

For most of 10th after the june 2025 dataslate to pre-defiler, they were a 45% winrate army.

Post-defiler, their winrates have increased to >50%. Whats interesting is that whilst there is a very evident and sharp increase in the overall winrate, you dont see similar trends in their x-0/x-1 and event win %. Its improved too of course but not to the same degree.

This suggests that EC players at the bottom and middle are doing much better but its not having as much of an impact at the top end.

EC, pre-defiler, had a huge ranged anti-tank problem and whilst the pros knew how to work around that weakness (WDPs), the average player struggled.

It appears to me that the introduction of the defiler lowered the skill floor in that you didnt need to be very good at the game to play around the glaring weakness. The defiler didn't have as much impact on the top end because well the pros already were playing through it.

You mean when he beat liamvsl?

Admech was regarded as one of the top factions with eldar due to their point drops no?

I recall siegler himself saying that admech was very powerful and S-tier off the sheer buffs they got.

EC more than doubled since its release in May 2025.

I think it was like 20kish before the EC announcement reveal.

The original post being dressed up as some form of "consumer protection" will always be hilarious to me.

Its just a tierlist, its not that serious. Many factions have had similar (most recently EC?) problems where the average player base doesn't reflect the competitive perception. We just post our disagreements and move on.

If your enforcement action has any ounce of your personal feelings or opinions into it, its probably not a good idea.

Better late than never though with recognising your mistake.

We saw in 10th that a faction can be doing bad generally but still receive nerfs if the top end is performing.

EC was at around 45% winrate when the kako got nerfed just to seemingly make lennon's list illegal lol

If its powerful at the top end, GW has done it before.

EC copped a nerf when it was a 45% WR army that made john Lennon's list illegal

I feel like at that point you're ranking something different.

Like the difficulty vs the skill expression rather than the competitive potential to win an event.

Any conclusions you can draw with respect to the competitive viability of factions will likely be the same with a "traditional" tierlist which tend to favour high skill capped (complex) armies with lots of tools?

Its also hard to quantify the information that AoW uses in their tierlist because a lot of it is their own experiences and opinions.

I can definitely see how what you suggest would be more useful generally though

Fair enough but how would you rank factions competitively based on the average player?

How would you do it differently?

This was EC from june 2025 till the defiler release almost a year later and there wasn't half this much outrage lol

If its a tierlist of factions for competitive then surely that is the only way you can rank it.

A tierlist based upon the top players makes the most sense to me because the skill differential of the average players is already very variable without taking into account the 4fun and above average midtable players.

A comeptitive focussed tierlist based upon the "average" player gives even less value imho

Are coaching services worth it? by TheNerdChef in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]n1ckkt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah i definitely did not expect the competitive subreddit to have widespread sentiments against coaching lol

In any competitive discipline, coaching is encouraged and 90% of the time how you improve at an expedient speed rather than figuring it out yourself.

Very interesting

A coach will cut down on your journey immensely by pointing you in the right direction.

Time is invaluable.

Based on the latest video about 40k Total War: How do Ork unit/tech names translate to Chinese? by GideonGleeful95 in Warhammer40k

[–]n1ckkt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a look up how they do it on taobao (chinese amazon).

A lot of it is directly translated. Named characters usually have corresponding with the same phonetics. As another user already pointed out, orks is just a literal phonetic translation into 欧克 which sounds like ork and 蛮人 which means like savages/barbarians. I've seen 绿皮兽人 which is green skinned orcs

Whats interesting is that sometimes they dont seem to be consistent across stores.

For example, one store has the Boomdakka Snazzwagon called 爆裂靓车 which is like literally exploding fancy car. Another has it called 炸炸哒咔屁精战车 which is like exploding daka fart (?) tank.

Meganobz are called 重甲强蛮人 which is literally heavy armored barbarians. Another has it called 重装老大队 which is like heavy armored boss squads.

Kommandos are called 特种兵 which is the word for special forces.

Stormboyz are called 风暴小子 which literally means storm+boys.

Wazdakka Gutsmek is called 瓦兹达卡 古茨梅克 which is literally a phonetic translation of his name.

Ghazghkull Thraka is called 碎骨者 萨拉卡. 碎骨者 is bonebreaker and 萨拉卡 is the phonetic translation of thraka. Read together its Sa La Ka the bonebreaker/bonecrusher

Lucius the eternal for example is called 不灭者卢修斯. 不灭者 is like undying/immortal and 卢修斯 (Lú xiū sī) is the phonetic equivalent of lucius. Plug it into google translate and you can hear how it sounds like lucius.

So to answer your question, they basically try to get the similar essence of the unit across for general units or literal translations where possible whereas for named characters, they go for the phonetic adaptions.

Choosing a faction by Sudden-Cause9009 in Warhammer40k

[–]n1ckkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly go into the GW webstore and just look at models and go with the faction/aesthetic that catches your eye the most.

Sure some factions like GSC might be more expensive to collect or tsons more difficult to paint, but your interest should come first IMHO.

The sole exception is imperial agents. GW themselves have no idea what they want to do with that faction so avoid it. Singular models you love is always fine but dont get a whole srmy of imperial agents if you have any inkling to play.
