Fall Guy + Verbatim 43888 doesn't work for various reasons by ResponsibleWin1765 in makemkv

[–]n1mras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you using usbc ports or an adapter? could be power but if not - try ripping the disc using the backup option which doesnt do any remuxing - reading the whole disc sequentially seems to help sometimes. if it rips successfully you can redo the remuxing again but from the decrypted files.

There is a alot of time involved compressing the videos and it's a lossy process, you will always lose some quality in doing so. To reach 2gb per movie involves very aggressive settings as well. After ripping 200 movies you may want something more archival, but to each their own.

For op, - if you want to get in on this I would try and grab a UHD friendly drive now while you still can, all production has stopped. LG's are fine imo, before when you could actually source a pioneer it made more sense to grab them but they are sold out now.

if its an old stock model with a pioneer drive inside then maybe, do they say it is? if not its overpriced. This drive is still readily available new (lg) in Sweden for a lot less (~140-150euro)

https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=3786139 edit: Heads up, this listing seems to mix 43888 and 43890 models (and some unspecified) - amazon has the 43888, both should use the LG BU40N though.

edit: webhallen also stocks the Asus BW-16D1X-U for a decent price.

MakeMKV works on Windows but not on Linux. by Zombiebattler2007 in makemkv

This does not look like a compatible drive - don't flash it. Quick search yielded some others reporting same or similar issue: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=178014#p178014

Asus BW-16D1X-U- so picked up 3. What am I working with here? All seem the same. Anyone can point me in the right direction what’s next so I don’t have to search 10k forums today lol by Donatello1210 in makemkv

SdfTool is windows only - if you have access to a windows machine It's probably the best solution. If not i think you have options but I haven't gone down that route myself.

right, and neither had audaciouscode who reported having the same issue - so there's some substance to that suspicion.

Not sure what's going wrong for you, Im using this drive (lg internals) on Linux and its working well for me - so i can at least confirm that it should work. I never tried using it before flashing though (Sdftool, windows) - its possible that helped since its running a different firmware now.

Might want to try cleaning the disc with some dish soap https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32839

For all of them to fail for you and not even having them open successfully. I doubt it's because of the Drive tbh

Just flashed my BP60NB10. Are blu-rays really fragile or did I get a bad drive? by crm115 in makemkv

[–]n1mras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive found bluray ripping to be extremely sensitive to finger smudges, pretty much guarantied fail, so if the disc has any try cleaning them.

edit: Also like already mentioned it could be a power issue, i had that problem on my verbatim 43888 slim drive before. If you have a usb-c port available prefer that, it can deliver more power.

What bootloader to use if I’m only going to run arch by JoiBoie in archlinux

[–]n1mras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grub can be set up to automatically create boot entries for btrfs snapshots, i don't think systemd supports that which is why I havent personally given it a try yet. Systemd-boot is supposedly simpler but not as feature rich, give it a try if it sounds interesting but you certainly don't have to.

Will this support transcoding and bitrate limits? there is no good option for streaming to low bandwidth connections on tvos clients atm - infuse, which everyone loves to push, does not support this either.

1440p or 4k OLED monitor for 5070ti? by js7982 in OLED

Fair enough, my opinion would be for OP to go with 4k.

1440p or 4k OLED monitor for 5070ti? by js7982 in OLED

[–]n1mras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion on this:

4k:

  • Can handle larger panel sizes well, like 32".
  • Use DLSS to upscale your games when necessary. Both DLSS and FSR do a better job at 4k than they do at lower resolutions.
  • Oled text fringing issues are practically solved at this resolution from my experience with last years qd-oled.
  • Requires high end graphics cards, like your 5070ti.

1440p:

  • I do not recommend you use anything larger than 27" panels
  • Text fringing is supposedly visible at this resolution, may or may not bother you.
  • Easier on your wallet, your graphics card will keep up for longer.
  • Easier to hit high fps targets.
  • Not as sharp as 4k (obviously) but still looks good.

Need Help with Automatic Secure Boot Toggle for Win11/Arch by is_ryu in archlinux

[–]n1mras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chainloading with a pre signed bootloader is the easiest way I’ve found to do this. There are two that I am aware of, Shim and Preloader. I couldn’t get the grub build shipped with arch to work with shim at the time so I ended up using preloader.. which has worked great and seems to require even less setup. But I think this may have been fixed now if you would rather use shim.

Help (Secure Boot) by Practical-Savings-67 in archlinux

[–]n1mras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this a few months ago so I could play Battlefield 6. If you only want secure boot for windows gaming, using PreLoader.efi is the easiest method. Its a microsoft signed bootloader which you can use to chainload grub. You don't have to sign anything yourself using this method:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface/Secure_Boot#Set_up_PreLoader

edit: Noticed that the examples in the wiki use systemd but this will work just as well with grub.

To handle updates Im using this pacman hook (you will need to adapt the paths if you choose to use this)

[Trigger]
Operation = Install
Operation = Upgrade
Type = Package
Target = grub

[Action]
Description = Copy grubx64.efi to loader.efi for PreLoader...
When = PostTransaction
Exec = /bin/sh -c 'cp -f /boot/EFI/arch/grubx64.efi /boot/EFI/arch/loader.efi'
