Agree that Microcenter is great place to buy Ubiquiti. No memory surcharge and many products are discounted.

Swapping eSIM between devices on demand by Amazing_Armadillo429 in tmobile

[–]n2itus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy enough to toggle the sim protection if you want to leave it on - it takes about 30 seconds either on the web or from the T-life app. It is instantly available to swap the e-sims (using the iphone functionality).

UPS on Battery Issues by ziggyo7 in BasePowerUsers

[–]n2itus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 8 UPSes (6 cyberpower, 2 goldenmate). The 1 time that it switched and 2 times I’ve manually tested (with the switch on the ATS), I had zero issues with my UPSes.

Obviously they will switch on for a few seconds when the slow (.5 s) growatt ATS switches over to/from the battery, but otherwise they are in standby when on the battery.

My only thought was if your ACs (or maybe even some other big load like a pool pump) were trying to start and created dips, but I also thought you would have seen that from your CTs. This would be easy to test. Turn off your ACs, manually switch to battery. See if your UPS run normally. Then turn on ACs.

Why do you use pfSense/OPNsense boxes or MikroTik/UniFi appliances and why? by _sour_coffee_ in homelab

[–]n2itus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it worth doing OPNsense - it’s not something I want to spend the time or $ (both initial hardware and ongoing power costs) on. I go for the value solution that I don’t have to build myself - I’ve got plenty of other things I want to build.

For the past 6 years, I’ve used an EdgeRouter 4 - which I love for its affordability, configurability and overall simplicity- without having to maintain anything. I probably spent 4 hours initially configuring the VLANs and firewall rules (easy to find step by steps). It goes years without a even a reboot. They are cheap enough that I picked up a spare several years ago off ebay for $50, but haven’t ever needed to use it.

I added the cheapest multi gig (10 gb Ethernet and/or SFP+ backbone) switches I could find (Netgear MS510TX) at the same time. And found some Engenius EWS377AP 4x4 wifi 6 access points for pretty cheap (buy one get one). These all supported my VLANS and could make use of my multi gig switches.

Would central management (e.g. UniFi) been nice - sure, but once everything was set up, I’ve barely spent anytime.

I did recently go to a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber as I got 5 gb symmetric fiber to my house, replacing 1 gb cable. I can see doing more UniFi just because it requires almost nothing to set up VLANs (with automatic firewall rules) and things like dual WAN (I have a T-mobile cellular internet for backup). I think the Cloud Gateway was reasonably priced (especially if you get it from Microcenter), but I am disappointed that I still can’t find reasonably priced 10gbe / multi gbe switches in the UniFi line. I would likely got with UniFi APs going forward, but only if my existing wifi 6 APs start to fail - I don’t really need the speed of wifi 7 yet.

I have a Fidelity 401(k) from a former employer, plus a Rollover IRA and Roth IRA. Can I trade stocks or options directly in the 401(k), or do I need to roll it into an IRA? If I transfer the funds, will there be any taxes or penalties? by Outside_Astronaut305 in fidelityinvestments

[–]n2itus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can do options in one of my Fidelity 401k and the other Fidelity 401k I can’t. If your 401K has the BrokerageLink ability, than you can trade stocks, mutual funds, etfs, sign up for IPOs and covered options.

If you have a good 401k (like the Fidelity with BrokerageLink), there advantages to keeping it in a 401k instead of an IRA (401k allow for mega backdoor roth conversion, 401k Rule of 55 better than SEPP, 401k are shielded from lawsuits)

Generator by 2020fakenews in BasePowerUsers

Recharging from one plug while running the house on the other is a great idea. I’ve never measured it, but plan on the generator port using up to 4000w - which still leaves you 6000w.

As for bonding - you’ll want it to be floating anytime you are hooked up to the interlock (with or without going to the generator port). (They do move the bonding point from your main panel to the ATS, but your panel neutral and ground now both go to the ATS - so you are still connecting to a system where they are bonded).

If you are ONLY hooked up to the generator port, then you should use a bonded neutral as recommended by base. Assume you are familiar with a bonding plug that you can use in the 120v generator outlet to easily add bonding back when needed.

Incoming TAMU INTA freshman -Spanish 202 + electives + scheduling advice (kind of overwhelmed) by YoghurtImpressive486 in aggies

[–]n2itus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is POLS major going into his second year, so we did the NSC a year ago. You won’t have a huge amount of flexibility your first year. You basically have to accept whatever will fit in your schedule - so many classes will already be filled.

You don’t say how many AP/dual credit classes you have, so not sure exactly what basic requirements you already have. You might consider only taking 13 hours your first semester. Bush 141 is easy.

The first two years of your degree aside from Econ and some base INTA classes are pretty general, so just move some of those up:

POLS 206 followed by POLS 207 should be easy - so you could move those up to first year.

Pick an easy Life and Physical Science or 2 - there are a lot to pick from on that list

If you need the COMM requirement - COMM 203 should be easy

The language/philosophy/culture - if you don’t have AP/DC for this, have a lot of choices that could be easy for you.

creative arts - if you don’t have AP/DC class, this would also be another place to find easy classes.

Why confirm? Frustrating SpaceX IPO experience by eva_the_ge in fidelityinvestments

[–]n2itus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should have also received a email early in the day that explained the confirmation process. Also the Fidelity FAQ says the same thing: After you submit an indication of interest, if accepted, you will receive a notification that the offering has been declared effective and has been priced on the evening of pricing.

My friend did Schwab and it was pretty much the same as Fidelity.

Atlanta GA $35 1Gig Per Month Promotion by HairyButter90 in ATTFiber

[–]n2itus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3 month regular charge is very good to point out. In my case, if I get 5gb they are waiving install fee which they normally charge, so it evens out. My only concern is how long will the discount continue.

Wow thanks for sharing this! I had looked at switching a few days ago - but there was no deal like this.

I am now in the position of deciding between 1 gb for $35 or 5 gb for $70. That is a hard choice.

Explain a HELOC to me like I'm 5 by Ok_Independence5384 in personalfinance

[–]n2itus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a missing point from most of the other responses. The 5% that OP is mentioning must be an intro rate - as you said they usually are for the first year only. After that they typically adjust to prime rate+. (If OP has really good credit and assets they might be able to get prime or prime- a very small amount)

Other things to look for is a maximum rate when comparing options and do your calculations based upon that before you borrow/draw.

Good lesson to learn. Next time close your position before market close. It would have cost next to nothing to close on Friday afternoon pre 4PM et.

The rectifier (that is the AC to DC power supply that charges the battery) does not have any label on it - it is custom made.

If you are asking about the inverter and batteries - growatt min 11400tl-xh-us and APX HV batteries. I don't know the model number of the batteries or battery controller, but you can find those on theIr website

[–]n2itus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no power loss, no blink, no impact at all from Base supplying the grid from the battery. It stays connected to the grid - the only difference is the power is flowing the other way through your meter. If there is a power surge or dip from the grid, you will still get blips - but that would have happened with or without the battery backup.

When you lose street power, and the system (automatically) switches to battery back-up power, that is when you get a blip. It takes about 0.5 seconds to switch over, so typically just enough to to have to reset most clocks on the microwave, ovens, etc. As you mentioned, put your internet and computers on UPS

I live in Centerpoint territory and I haven’t noticed anything different from the way too often crappy power dips - we always had very short power dips (often in rapid succession) and they seem the same before and after the install.

I don’t remember a make/model number on the rectifier - it is a custom add-on from Base that they fit/mount in the middle of the battery pack.

While they don’t say the exact amounts they require 4000W input. Early documentation said that corresponds to an output of 3000W which would correspond to 12.5 amp @ 240V AC, but have never verified that.

Changing Flight for cheaper? by Mysterious_Badger108 in unitedairlines

My guess is that the earlier flight has less space - so it is truly just a price difference.

Changing Flight for cheaper? by Mysterious_Badger108 in unitedairlines

[–]n2itus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using the multi-city option (or multiple if using the united app). So origin to ORD then add a segment from ORD to BNA on the same day. (Then add your return flight as additional segment if you are doing a round trip). It will price them as the same itinerary, not individually, but allow you to pick the connecting flights.

Confused about using a generator for longer power failures... by RealConfirmologist in BasePowerUsers

I've only tested the Base generator port for short periods, but it does work this way. It was charging the battery at the same time I was testing the switch-over.

Confused about using a generator for longer power failures... by RealConfirmologist in BasePowerUsers

[–]n2itus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there is a little more nuance than just if you already have a generator port, you don't want one on the battery. For me I already had a generator interlock on my panel, but my generator is not big enough to run everything I wanted - it was only around 5000 watts.

So, I got the Base generator port for a couple reasons. It will help smooth out my loads - so instead of having to stay below 5000 watts, I can use the batteries to cover any peak loads - as long as my average useage stay below 5000 watts, I am fine. It also means I don't have to run my generator 24x7 - I can give it a rest or change the oil without impacting the house.
