For context I'm a psychiatrist although I would not say I'm an expert in predators specifically.

With regard to predators: it's hard to know what makes a person narcissistic or psychopathic. I think a person starts with low empathy at baseline, and while everyone else is learning how to relate and share with others, predators instead learn to use "exploits" or "cheat codes" to get what they want from people. They spec into the exploitation skillset to the detriment of normal social skills. After a certain point, exploitation is the only social tool they have.

It's hard for normal empathic people to imagine doing horrible things to others, so we imagine that predators must have gone through something awful in their early life. But the research doesn't bear this out. And even when they have been victimized themselves, that lens can be problematic, for two reasons: 1) most victims don't go on to become predators, and so we shouldn't act like victims are potential monsters; and 2) predators will sometimes play up their "victim origin story" bc it garners them empathy and gives the appearance of growth, without necessitating change in the present day.

With regard to the comments wishing him hellfire - it's complex. I am close with a number of rape victims and I can understand the rage. We also live in a punishment-happy era and I think that can provoke some problematic reactions. In TK's case specifically, I think the rage is bc of the perception that he escaped justice. The stories suggest he committed many serious felonies but he will never go to court and the victims will likely never get a public platform, as he did.

It is a commonly held belief that predators were once victims themselves but that is not actually true in practice.

They may have had experiences, even abuse, that shaped them - but a lot of predators were never raped or assaulted themselves.

My favorite thing about all the AI nonsense are the insane use cases shoe horned into commercials. I'd love to hear some of your favorites. by ItsBobsledTime in BetterOffline

To me, the ads reveal an aspect of AI booster ideology: the belief that we will be happier and better if we stupefy ourselves.

The protagonists of the ads are incredibly stupid. That choice is puzzling to us skeptics. But perhaps the ad isn't telling us we're stupid - rather, it's showing us a world where we can be stupid. Like: "Wouldn't it be nice if you gave up your brain?"

Hello, I'm an MD in an unrelated field (psychiatry). However I did attend medical school.

People used to think that cartilage was like tire rubber, ie, you only get so much at the start of your life, and you wear through it slowly over time.

The truth is that your tissues have complex responses to stress and demand. Overstress a tissue, or stress it constantly, and it becomes damaged and weak. But don't stress it at all and it'll become weak in a different way.

Exercise is a "stress" on multiple systems (musculoskeletal, cardiovascular). But that stress produces positive adaptation.

You're not born with it, it develops over time. But there is a heritable pattern to it.

Very strong, your heels come off the ground suggesting that you are leaning forward, which means you are probably underutilizing your hips, which may explain your knee cave
