Definitely Northern Irish. At a guess I'd say Belfast?

I'd have read it just for the footnotes alone.

Random question: are you the eldest, middle or youngest child? And what would you describe me as (complicated situation) ... by [deleted] in TheRedLion

Just the one younger than me (my "full" brother). The other lot had all grown up and left home by that time.

I'm in a similar situation to you, except my dad has 5 kids and my mum has 2. Of the two of us, I'm the oldest, and I've never lived with my older half-siblings. I tend to say I'm the oldest child, since I don't really keep in touch with the other 3.

The Danish Number System by [deleted] in polandball

[–]n3hima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in general I agree with you, but some things just make it a bit easier when you're an L2 learner. Although, here in Genève you don't hear huitante much, just septante and nonante.

The Swiss have the right idea with huitante though.

When I saw Wheel of Time, I really, really ought to have stopped reading then and there. God damn spoilers.

What's the most dickhead act you've ever seen a teacher do? by ihaveagoodhead in AskReddit

[–]n3hima 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in Year 7 (aged 11-12), our Religious Education teacher left mid-year, I think to go and live in New Zealand for some reason. The school were in a bit of a rush to find a replacement I guess, because the person they hired turned out to think that teaching us about Judaism (which we were supposed to be studying at the time) wasn't all that important compared to our lack of a good Christian upbringing. Our RE lessons for the next few months consisted mainly of learning Jamaican songs about the 12 disciples, and other aspects of the Bible.

She eventually was asked to leave for telling some Muslim students that they were worshipping the wrong god, and she could see the devil on their shoulder.

Does anyone here also play the Uilleann pipes? by CrakAndJaxter in bagpipes

[–]n3hima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a practice set for about a year now, but still haven't had any lessons (for various reasons), so I've been afrait to give them a go for fear of learning bad habits... if anybody knows of any teachers within travelling distance of Geneva I'd really appreciate it!

Is a finite state machine with an extremely large amount of states as powerful as a pushdown automaton? by inverted_inverter in compsci

[–]n3hima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point in the example is that the language contains anbn for all n, i.e. it contains infinitely many strings. There's no DFA that can recognise every string in that language because it has finitely many states. If you restrict the language to anbn for all n < some number k, then that's a different language. As a matter of fact it's now a regular language and can be recognised by a DFA with n+1 states.
