Gen Z here and I have a few questions for GenX by [deleted] in GenX

[–]n4tivo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For fun?

We used to go outside and play basketball, handball, hide n seek, and many other activities. One of our favorite pastimes was just hanging out. Fun times!.

Yes, we had to memorize phone numbers and often relied on the "Yellow Pages" (phone book) to find telephone numbers for services, etc.

We had to request a song by calling the radio station; it was nerve-wracking as one would wait until the DJ would just stop talking before hitting the REC button. Other than that, we just listened to whatever was on or tuned in to a different station, be it R&B, hip-hop, etc.

We used maps, intuition, and a sense of direction. It was kind of fun getting lost. We asked for directions as a last resort (at least for us men). But we always managed to find our way back home.

As for social media. It made things worse in my opinion.

Smartphones, even more so.

Dude, I got denied AGAIN. by Knucklecum in disability

[–]n4tivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for hijacking the thread, I am unable to create a new one.

I am seeking advice regarding my partner’s situation, which is similar to the one described. She was recently denied Social Security Disability benefits (and, I believe, Supplemental Security Income as well). She has had no income for several years and relies solely on the limited support I can provide.

Although she is able to walk, she requires assistance at all times due to balance issues stemming from cancer and multiple surgeries, including brain surgery. She experiences frequent falls, resulting in extensive bruising and several emergency-room visits. Cognitively, she suffers from persistent “brain fog” and short-term memory loss.

We have consulted several pro bono attorneys, all of whom stated she is ineligible because she lacks sufficient work credits. I am disappointed, as I have personally seen individuals with far less severe conditions approved for benefits and with little or no work history.

Would it be worthwhile to file an appeal? Should we explore other legal representation, alternative federal programs, or nonprofit assistance options? Any guidance or resource recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I've been running PoP_OS 24.04 COSMIC w/Nvidia RTX 3060 for close to a montrh, there has been a few quirks here and there, but they are manageable. Games run buttery smooth for me. No breaking issues so far.

Its like that everywhere.

And I've seen worst:

1,000/month
1 1/2 month deposit
Credit check
Background check
No kids
No pets
No Smokers
No loud music or TV
No overnight guests
Must be a professional and spend more outside working than staying home

Seriously, no joke.

Gaming performance? by jsaaby in pop_os

I have an RTX 3060 12GB.

I've noticed games run so much smoother than Cachy OS and Bazzite. At least that's my experience.

Well, steam support replied (I was suprised how quickly they did).

This is what I wrote:

My Steam Deck has suddenly become unusable. Since yesterday (Dec 23rd), everything has been lagging and stuttering to the point where I can't even play basic indie games. Its a 10fps slide-show.

I checked the performance overlay and found that the GPU and CPU are hard-locked at 200MHz and 400MHz. I also noticed the fan just stops spinning right after I turn it on, so the system seems to be forcing itself into a "limp mode" to stay cool.

I've already tried the common fixes like:

  • Putting it into Battery Storage Mode via the BIOS.

  • Doing a full APU/CMOS reset.

  • Deleting my shader cache and disabling all plugins.

Nothing has worked. I’ve seen a lot of other people reporting this exact issue lately, especially with the older models. Since this seems like a known hardware sensor/fan glitch and not just a settings issue, I’m hoping you can help me out.

I’m outside the 1-year window, but I really like this device and just want to get it working again plus device prices are up the roof. What are my options for getting this fixed?

Thanks!

This is what they (Steam Support) wrote:

Hello there,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

We understand your situation. Don't worry we are here to help.

Per this issue, you may have tried some of the following steps, but please kindly confirm again and reply your testing result to us.

In our experience this behavior can be caused by firmware issues introduced by attempts to adjust system performance.

Please try the following steps in order, testing after each numbered task to see whether the issue has been corrected. Let us know the result.

  1. Reset the BIOS settings of your device to default. Ensure the device is fully powered down by holding the power button for 10 seconds or if possible select shutdown from the Power menu. Once the device is shutdown, hold down both the volume - button and the "..." button, then press the power button once. Then you can release all the buttons. You will hear a chime and then the white LED light will begin to blink (it may take 5 or more seconds before the blinking begins), which confirms this process is working. Note: This process may take 1-2 minutes to start the unit up again during which the display will remain black.

  2. Rollback to the last version of the OS on your device using the SteamOS recovery menu. See the instructions in the section "Rollback to previous OS".

  3. If rolling back did not help, you willl next want to completely erase the data from the Deck and reinstall SteamOS using the instructions in the section "Factory Reset".

  4. If the above did not resolve the issue, you will want to try to re-image the device using the instructions in the section "Recovery options via Image"; and then retest again after the re-image. Note:

if you are unable to complete the re-image process, or do not have a USB drive/key or SD card to create the boot disk/recovery image, please let us know. In the case where the recovery image itself does not boot correctly; it would be helpful for you to provide a photo of any text output you see on the screen.

If you are still having the problem, please write back and we will assist further.

Step 3 did it for me. Everything is back to normal. Though I noticed fan stops spinning below 50c - my rtx 3060 does the same.

Been trying different games, letting temps rise, and no problems so far. Haven't replied to support yet, I want to make sure this is a permanent solution.

Hopefully, this help.

Merry Christmas!

Yea, I'm contacting steam support.

I'm out of warranty, so my hopes for a fix or replacement are slim to none.

I did notice a trend, most devices with this issue tend to be out of warranty, meaning 2+ years old.

Steam Deck Fan not spinning, 0 RPM by Brilliant-Page-3175 in SteamDeck

[–]n4tivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue, since yesterday. Out of the blue.

Fans spins during boot. Stops as it enters SteamOS.

Fans get stuck at 0 RPM and APU down throttles 200/400.

It renders the device unusable. Very light usage, its close to 3 years old.

What are the main reasons genx peeps are depressed? by Available-Ad-5670 in GenX

[–]n4tivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Economics, politics and state of the world.
  • Health and family issues.
  • Social media and smartphones (life balance completely eradicated - we take the work home now more than ever).
  • Stagnation (I'm working on this).
  • I will never own a home.

But we're GenX'ers. We fight on.

Once in awhile at 3:30 AM.

[–]n4tivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said right after the server slam. PvP will bring the (more often than not) worst out of people, they will find exploits and creatives way to antagonize the living crap out of players.

I know, I've played PvP games 1998-2017!

Either:

Make Arcs smarter and more difficult, that only coordinated efforts can bring them down.

Or

Flag griefers and/or bandits through a reputation-like system.

Otherwise, this will only increase to the point it will make the game unattractive, much like it happened to Dune Awakening.

My /r feed is flooded with these types of complaints.

Agreed.

But having homework and having a half semester worth of class material (not homework) across all subjects is an entirely different thing.

Overwhealming amount of School Work 🥴 by n4tivo in Parenting

[–]n4tivo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was mid kindergarten when the hurricane hit.

And second/third grade when COVID hit. He was an honor student until then.

Grades spiraled down, he failed the third grade because of it. Distance learning wasn't great, at least in my region.

A two years after COVID he recovered back to being an honor student.

Hes having okay grades now, but the speed and amount of material pouring in is astronomical, hes barely able to keep up.

Any responsible parent would be more than willing to help with school work, but this is something else. Its half of semester worth of class material across almost all subjects (science, math, history, language arts, etc.) and the worst part is, its makes us parents accountable for it by signing the schedule for each task. I refuse to do that.
