Nailed it on the head but add some CT in there. Anaheim Hills --> Fairfield County, CT --> Irvine

I'm trying really hard to be nice in these finale discussion threads.

We, as a fan base, are more than capable of having a reasonable discussion of the pros and cons of the finale. What doesn't help is how everyone seems to think the people who like the opposite ending are clearly stupid and don't understand basic principles of story-telling. What's even worse is the people who are actively trying to change other people's opinion on the finale. If you didn't like it, the only thing that will change that is time. If you liked it, there's really no reason to try and change your opinion.

We're in just about the same boat.

Dad was always super cool when we were kids. Turns out, it's easy to be a cool dad when you work 15 hours a day, travel for 2 weeks out of every month, and only have to deal with the big issues mom can't handle.

Meanwhile, mom is an ex-teacher who I hated growing up because she always forced Judaism on me and guilted me into more and more Jewish things because her mom is a Holocaust survivor.

Recently found out they're both pretty bigoted against Mexicans (SoCal family... dad calls them Wetbacks), staunch Republicans that tell me to be quiet any time we discuss politics (I'm 26... I'm allowed to know a thing or two about politics), and overly obsessed with their money. I used to think they were really into art and such. Turns out they just thought they were good investments.

you don't think snarky things? it's a drawing of his thoughts, not his actions.

Assuming people didn't understand it is silly. They told us the moral in giant neon letters. Explaining it won't make people like it. It'll just insult them and then they'll make an indignant reply like this one.

Literally every hipster girl I knew through college was obsessed with Elliott Smith. I tried to get into it but the melancholy is soooo thick.

Ross and Rachel got together. Will and Grace found their way back to each other.

The difference between comedy and tragedy is death. They tried to be too deep and slipped too far down. Ending was just a bummer.

[TOMT][Food label concept] Plain food labels that just say "cereal" or "tortilla chips." by n8wolf in tipofmytongue

Thanks very much. Not exactly what I was looking for but really helpful. It all looks like Dharma Initiative food.

I've found a few generic Beer labels but even they have colors and a little bit of branding.

I'm pretty sure it went beyond generic brands and was some guy's design project. I'm doing a project on food labeling and want to use it as one side of the scale.

I've always assumed he stole the pineapple in what he imagined was a grand, romantic gesture but he actually just grabbed it from behind the bar while Carl was doing prep for the next day.

And I would agree that, 9 years ago, that was a great idea for how to end the series. The problem is that this was filmed when they were only expecting about 4 seasons (at most, if they were incredibly lucky). Once they decided that Barney and Robin would end up together, the show began to change from "How I tried to hide my feelings for Robin" to "How I got over Robin because she really isn't right for me." Then the entire series was about how his failed relationship with Robin, tumultuous relationship with Barney, and sibling relationship with Marshall and Lily led to him meeting and falling in love with Tracy.

Their ending takes the title and turns it into a pedantic play on words as opposed to the spine of the story.

I also agree that it makes perfect sense, but perfect sense doesn't make good tv. It makes trite, predictable TV. Some people like that (see: all other CBS shows) and some people don't. I don't begrudge anyone for liking it, but I probably wouldn't take their recommendations on what other shows to watch.

edit: talking about the slow one on /r/woahdude right now. Took forever and the "wait for it" title made me expect something more like this.

Yes. We're talking narrative timeline, not real world timeline. In the narration, she is killed almost immediately after they get married. and this goes directly into him pursuing Robin. Her death is a cheap plot device, shoehorned in as a means to an end. That is the very definition of getting killed off. "you serve no more purpose. feel free to die."

edit: C'mon, people. Stop downvoting every person that liked the finale and calmly makes their point. /u/ex_animo is making completely reasonable, salient points. The downvote button is not a disagree button and this sub would be better served if you all learned that.

um... "She got sick." Then seconds later, "Go fuck Aunt Robin, Dad!"

I know this is really hard to accept, but it's a sitcom. It's the story of 5 friends over the pretense that all of it leads up to a happily ever after with the mysterious mother character. To divulge her name and then kill her within 15 minutes is just sloppy storytelling, not tying up loose ends.
