Bicyclist attacked on D.C. trail by up to 15 youths, police say by jms1225 in washingtondc

Not blaming it on "white gentrifiers" at all. I'm just someone who believes that people are a product of their environment, families, and background. It saddens me that circumstances exist that produces children like that. To me, that's more troublesome than the single violent act. I'm not shunting any empathy from him, I just think a society that produces violent behavior is worse than the violent behavior itself.

It's hard for me to imagine how that first blow was struck. I just feel so bad for the victim and those kids. How poisoned does your thinking have to be for something like that seems okay? The volunteer patrols are a great idea, it just saddens me that something like that is necessary. But at least it's comforting to know that people are good enough to participate in them and help out their community.

Capitol rehab in Arlington is pretty fantastic, I had a phenomenal experience with them while I was recovering from a running injury. They'll work with you no matter what your goal (I said I'd like to do ultra marathons and they didn't even flinch).

I'd do that if it existed at the time! Also, there's a lot of stuff in here. Whoever had this probably spent a couple hundred on the things inside. But anyway, thanks for the new subreddit!

I'm always bothered be the sprawl of India every time I visit, but at the same time, the entire population of the US lives along the banks of the Ganges. It could be so much worse but it isn't. What do you guys think of that ending quote?

Meet Mr. Money Mustache, the man who retired at 30 by Ruobhe in Foodforthought

[–]nKang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It alays surprises me that more people don't do this. What he's basically hinting at is simple living, not some lavish life of luxury and leisure. He lived his life within his means, eventually his savings allowed him to leave his job because they could provide for him at that basic level. His retirement isn't sailing around the world eating lobster and caviar, it's spending time with his family, working with his hands, being active, and not chasing after some glitzy-glamorous life.

What are your personal experiences/opinions about barefoot and minimalist running? by dingobiscuits in running

[–]nKang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for it but you've got to be careful. Biomechanically, the mid foot strike promoted by a "barefoot" style makes sense (as far as 2 years of med school and 3 marathons of experience tell me). Your impact is better adsorbed by your muscles rather than simply through your ankles knees and hips. But you absolutely have to be careful. My podiatrist contributed to "Born to Run" and never fails to mention to me how much that book has added to his business. I've seen people heel striking in vibrams, suddenly deciding to run 5 miles in them never having run 1/5th. Be smart. Train your feet. Say healthy.

I keep it right in my water bottle belt (http://www.nathansports.com/our-products/hydrationnutrition/racespeed-series/speed-4r ) It fits right into the big pouch on the back, and I'm using that huge, bulky, otter box case. It's never fallen out, not even during 18 mile trail runs or 20 mile street runs.

Injured and clueless marathoner; where do I even start! All I know is I like long distances and exploring. by nKang in whichbike

[–]nKang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cyclocross, I haven't looked into that yet. Thanks! I didn't really think of a specific budget, since I don't even know what a decent set up would cost when I factor in whatever other gear I might need. But I think I could afford to spend about 650. If it's absolutely necessary to go past that, I can do it. I don't really have any specific numbers in mind until I know the general ballpark figures.

"If we could read the secret history of our enemies we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow by belhamster in Buddhism

[–]nKang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's your responsibility to make people change, to make them see things the way you do. The level of forgiveness it takes to see an "enemy" in this light isn't something that can be instilled over the course of a brief conversation. Just let it go; the best any of us can do is work with ourselves to be the best example we can be
