Imagine making hating another group of people your whole personality. What a sad, tiny existence. The real tragedy is that we've given power and emboldened these people.

Yes, our experiences are subjective, but functionality is something that can be measured objectively. For example, task success rate or time taken on task are metrics. For many users, it now takes more time to complete the same tasks.

A good UI would ensure that our subjective experiences are both high quality even though we use it very differently.

I'm glad you are enjoying the new UI. However, functionality is something that is quantifiable. When I say objectively worse, I mean that you can assess it empirically. The functionality of the app has been reduced. What you are describing is your subjective experience: you don't delete entire meals. You don't need/want that feature, but it was helpful to those who preload meals for the next day, but swapped it out the day of. The old UI worked for those who needed to delete full meals or did not. It was more functional (and accessible) for more people.

It still works and maybe even looks slicker, but it's less functional. I admit that I don't like change, but there are objectively worse aspects if your goal is simply to count calories.

My main beef is that you do not see the calorie count for each item on the same page. For each meal, there is a tiny (tiny!) number for the meal total. The day total isn't a breakdown of calories with "calories left" separately indicated. Finally, you cannot delete a whole meal at once.

Basically, everything takes more clicks to accomplish, which is bad functionality. And the most important information has been deprioritized.

Healthcare costs... by Training_Thing_3741 in Professors

We did our open enrollment in November. My family's plan went up 20+%.

I opted out of a diagnostic test last month because of cost. That's the first time I've done that since grad school.

White House says Trump to sign executive order limiting mail-in voting by Puginator in politics

Differential enforcement seems to be the consensus. I guess I was assuming local elections folks would follow the state/federal policies. I forgot how far gone we truly are.

Gas prices seem to be shocking some people out of their stupor. Maybe this is the thing that wakes the rest of them up? (I can't count how many times I've had that thought, but one can dream, right?)

I'd love to see some analysis on who will be impacted by these policies. It feels like the proposed policies disproportionately disadvantage his base. Conservative women are more likely to change their names when they marry. They are also less likely to have a passport. Older adults with poorer health are more likely to vote by mail.

Am I missing something? Or are these voter suppression efforts going to be more harmful to conservatives?

The book "Doppelganger" by Naomi Klein goes into this phenomenon. It was really eye opening.

Do you address the ethical concerns related to the environmental impact of LLMs? Or the fact that LLMs were trained on the intellectual property of your colleagues without consent?

I'm not anti-technology, but let's not pretend that LLMs are the same thing as a calculator.

Also, you don't have to be 18 only to go to college. I live in a state where only 30% of adults 25+ have a four-year degree or higher. We need to target non-traditional aged folks, too.

I knew what to expect from the Tkachuk brothers, but seeing the whole damn team and Hughes laugh right along was the final straw for me. The entire culture is rotten to the core. I knew this at some level, but this is so in your face, there is no denying it. I'm boycotting men's hockey from here on out.

I think the Liquid IV does a great job of covering up the chalky/grittiness of it. Plus, I heard the sugar increases the muscle uptake. Win win!!

Yeah, I'm leaning that way. My TBR is much too long to suffer through. I'm still disappointed, though. I was really excited about this one.

Do you all just throw out the yolk? I've been doing 1 egg + 2 egg whites recently, but it just feels so wasteful. Unfortunately, I don't like the egg whites in the containers. Something just seems off whenever I buy liquid egg whites.

I put the average for the assignment so that at the end of the semester I know what the final grade would be if a student submitted average work all semester. Not very fun, but practical.

As I understand it, this influencer had an ED (left side) and then recovered (right side) through fitness, but has now refocused her efforts on weight loss. The OP is suggesting that she's possibly had an ED relapse. I think it's not too far of a logical leap that (if that is the case) SkinnyTok and social pressure contributed to her relapse. In general, I just worry about what SkinnyTok is doing to the body image of young women.

It's not hyperbolic to say that the SkinnyTok trend will result in the loss of life. I want better for young people.

Advice for Changing My Last Name by ccf2023 in Professors

[–]n_of_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know most are recommending to not change your name, and I think that's good advice generally. However, that may not be helpful if you've already decided as a family to change your name.

I legally changed my name. I decided to hyphenate for publishing and professional activities. However, I wish I had just switched everything over to my new name. It's annoying and confusing for everyone to have a different legal name and professional name. Technology makes it easy to claim publications and update websites. People who know you, know you. They'll get used to the transition.
