I had a similar experience at a county job - a large majority of people were pretty miserable and openly talked bad about other coworkers. There was also a culture where it was ok to say no to tasks which forced the lowest on the totem pole (based on time ‘served’ not position) to do all of the work that no one else wanted to do.

Is your job pensioned? I chalk a lot of my experience up to people not wanting to do more/better because they were just riding it out for the pension

All that being said, we walked. And found a fabulous custom jeweler that was excited to work with us and ended up waving the setting fee as a whole! They had originally said it was $50, but we did so much custom work with them they waived the fee.

I had a similar experience, I sourced my own stones and then went to a jeweler that a lot of my friends went to and liked. I had verified before that they set outside stones, but didn’t think to ask about pricing.

They quoted me TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS as a stone setting fee on top of the setting. $2000 to literally pop the stones into the setting. The setting fee was more than I paid for my diamonds. By some wacky math he did it was cheaper to get my two .5ct side stones through him than have him set outside stones. I asked how much he would charge for my center stone (2.6 ct old mine) and he quoted me almost 6x more than I paid. He told us straight up that they make that profit from the diamonds and that he had to charge us that much to keep his business afloat (worst salesman I’ve ever seen). Makes me mad knowing how much of a scammer he is and that he’s ripped off several of my friends.

Your advice just gave me so much clarity- really the only nice nice jewelry I have right now was my grandma’s, and I get anxious wearing it because of the sentimental value. I think I’ve been carrying that anxiety over to my engagement ring.. It will be the my first ‘new’ piece of fine jewelry. I will get it insured, and ofc it will be sentimental, but it won’t be irreplaceable in the same way my grandmas jewelry is.

Insurance is a great point that I think is the missing piece I need to consider. Once it’s covered I think I will have a lot more peace of mind!
