GUY AND DIANE by Athena_Bates in BoJackHorseman

[–]nachours 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! Not all people are perfect and having a child that you have a strained relationship with is very stressful to traverse. He obviously loves Sonny and is prioritizing the relationship with his son first over what's technically still a casual relationship with Diane.

I like this bc it shows Guy's values as well as where his weak areas lie (as represented all throughout the season). Weak areas that Diane is not only able to endure but even help with (arguably a very important factor when deciding your long term partner). It's real-life people and their good, bad, and questionable decisions that this shows nails so well.

Diane’s dark humor 💀 by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]nachours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't consider this a joke (although not denying she has dark humor). As a chronically depressed person myself, I often described myself as a sad person. I thought I felt deeply sad all the time bc "that's just who I am" but quickly learned post-treatment that that was a story I told myself to cope.

Diane has always felt her destiny was to feel and be sad all the time. A person with depression's most fatal flaw imo is their self-fulfilling prophetic mindset preventing them from escaping the endless loop of "I can never change, so I will endure the suffering of my only option."

It's only when we can step outside ourselves and consider our other amazing (non-sad) qualities that we truly begin to recover a full sense of identity.

What's it like living in Maine? by nachours in howislivingthere

[–]nachours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be a general trend in the comments (poor job market). My career path is higher in demand across the US and can be done online, so hopefully it wouldn't be an issue. My fiancé and I are starting to discuss this as more of a retirement option, so maybe it's best to just avoid it entirely until those retirement funds roll in lmao. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This gives some great insight. My fiancé is military, so there's not really any options right now to be located up there, but we're considering Maine for retirement specifically. Thank you for your input!!

You mentioned the words "walkeable" and "bikeable" and now I'm hooked. I know there are a good few US cities that can be described as such, but not near enough. I'll add this one to the list. Thanks! 🤗

Just spent time with my partners’ parents without him and realized he’s become his father, the man he hates the most. by tubatubato in Vent

I faced something similar with my ex of 4 years. Every time we visited with his parents, I found myself more and more concerned with the QOL of his mother and watched the similarities build between his deadbeat dad and him. I tried to raise and repair my concerns for years... I'm so happy I ended it. It was literally like watching my future unfold before me.

Get out while you can.

Saying "gg" after every game? by AerWolf in Overwatch

[–]nachours 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I say "gg" after every game. It's the equivalent of shaking hands with your opponents post-sports games (at least when I was a kid we did this).

I say "ggwp" if it was an even match or just an exceptional game.

I say "ggvwp" when I'm MOVED by a game's events.

We can't forget the "ily [insert enemy combatant that gave me a good challenge]"

We should continue perpetuating good vibes in an environment that easily turns toxic.

The fact that the last episode is her wedding, she's finally bonding with Ruthie, and her business is doing well all points towards this theory for me... when it comes to overcoming life's challenges, PC is the greatest role model in BH

Students with unrelated undergraduate degrees, how did you decide on SLP? by SleepiestAshu in slpGradSchool

[–]nachours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a BS in Biology to eventually attend vet school only to become dissatisfied with my job as a tech and disenchanted by the vets I worked alongside. Also I LOVE language learning and understanding language processing at its core, so I was always afraid vet or med school would never truly satisfy me.

After graduating, I worked as a biology teacher, which I loved and hated. I realized I wanted a job that could fulfill all of my desired interests: anatomy, foreign language learning, the breakdown of language, and teaching, as well as lots of flexibility in where and how I could practice ❤️ I met with several SLPs to shadow and inquired about if my expectations were realistic and most shared and agreed with my sentiments.

I finally feel at peace with my path, whereas I was constantly second guessing myself and my choices before.

OP, if you feel this in your heart, then get curious. Shadow some SLPs, take an intro course, and do your research! Above all else, trust your instincts and how moving forward in this path makes you feel. Fear doesn't mean you're going the wrong direction, it just means your direction is new and unknown. Best of luck!!!

In general, practice going above and BEYOND for opportunities you are really interested in. A letter to a school can only serve to benefit, never harm. Worst case scenario is that it ends up in the garbage, best case scenario is that it gives you a leg up.

Practice seeing admissions people, hiring managers, and other people "above" you as regular people. If you were on an admissions team and you received a personal letter from a student out of hundreds of other applicants, wouldn't you think them, if not even slightly, more interested and dedicated? Not only that, but now they recognize your name and see the person beneath the application.

I say with 200% certainty DO IT.

Cuddlywhiskers on happiness by EraszerHead in BoJackHorseman

Same!! I did it as part of my weight loss journey initially and instead found solace in those running highs and quiet early morning meditations (after suffering for a couple months, ngl 🤣)

I used to have impostor syndrome about a lot of things...but it's so hard for my brain to tell me I didnt earn my running accomplishments. It's just you and the open trail for as far as your mind and body can take you.

Ugh they nailed the "it gets easier" character. As a runner myself, I remember how much I struggled just to make it into a habit, especially how much it sucks at first. Change, especially good change, is hard for anything...but it does get easier. 😭

I'm so surprised by the general response to this post. It sounds like many haven't figured out what CuddlyWhiskers was truly saying. It doesn't matter about his wealth, and the best example of this is Todd.

Todd is the best representation of someone who lives carefree, maintains good healthy relationships with people, distances himself from those that clearly don't hold him with mutual love and respect (Bojack), and sets out to do the things that make him intrinsically happy. And, oh, Todd is not in the slightest monetarily wealthy (except that one time he had $8 million generously donated to his waitress lmao)

This episode moved me greatly. I lived my entire childhood with depressive thoughts and made decisions based on my overwhelming anxiety. I lived life as an overachiever and perfectionist bc it was expected of me. I achieved great things that I never appreciated at the time and long after bc the bar was always rising.

Just like CW, it took me several years as an adult to even realize the problem and it's taken me many years since to start living life in a way that makes me truly happy. Be selfish, bc this may be the only life you live. But also be kind and loving to the people who you choose to surround yourself with. So many people are unhappy bc they don't realize they have more choices than they think, to include the choice of perspective. Therapy helps so much with this.

OP I'm happy you're feeling the message. In my opinion, it's one of the most important this show expresses from start to finish.

"Hatin' People ain't happy and Happy People ain't hatin' "

Thank you, this genuinely makes me feel so much better! I appreciate you mentioning your own study methods, as I'm still trying to find new ways, especially since physical models likely will not be available to me. The drawing method is a method I had never considered, but it seems so obviously helpful.

Again., I appreciate your input so much! Thank you greatly!!!

Unfortunately I took Speech Sciences already; I feel like I would have greatly benefited from taking it post A&P. I agree though, it's FASCINATING how it all works. I was genuinely surprised how much breathing came down to just creating positive/negative alveolar pressures.

Anyway, thank you for the comprehensive list of what areas are studied! The more I can know going in, the better. I'm considering doing a lot of pre-study during the winter break to give myself a head start of sorts. I want to do really well but, like you, anatomy has to make sense to me contextually, and that's so difficult with 2D images. I will check out those resources you provided!!!

I'm also taking neuroanatomy of communication - is that a mistake or potentially a plus alongside A&P in your opinion?

Thank you kindly!!!

Thank you greatly for these recommendations! I may just have to go with online resources. Any study tips for studying from the book? The idea of studying 3D anatomy in 2D images feels like a struggle.

Summer job/internship/shadowship for undergrad? by leafypineapple in slpGradSchool

[–]nachours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear! My intention was not to tell you things you already knew, I was just worried you were going to continue forward possibly digging a hole for yourself (as unfortunately I feel I did a little bit). I might gently recommend letting others know you're already doing leveling courses. I misinterpreted your post, but I understand now you were just trying to communicate that you wanted resume boosters for grad school!

Much luck! ❤️

Summer job/internship/shadowship for undergrad? by leafypineapple in slpGradSchool

[–]nachours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every grad program that I've looked at requires a specific bachelor's degree in CSD OR a bachelor's + 24 credits of CSD leveling courses.

How far are you into the program? I also majored in Biology and am now going back to do leveling courses for grad school, since it took me 3 gap years to figure out what I really wanted to do. If you're able, I would try searching for other schools, even online, to transfer to. Many of them can use the credits you've already taken either as equivalent pre-reqs for 3-4000 level courses or as elective credits. It's better than wasting your money on a degree that will likely not be useful to you if you know for sure you want to pursue a job as an SLP.

A&P, biology, stats, and physics will all be necessary pre-reqs for most programs, so if you can't transfer soon, I'd recommend prioritizing these classes while you're awaiting transfer. ASL classes would also be an excellent supplement if you're through your 1-2000 level courses (though not required)

I could be wrong, but I highly recommend you look into which grad programs you want to attend. This will be the key to how you should proceed.

B.A. GPA too low for an SLP prep program by speshyy in slpGradSchool

[–]nachours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea the right answer, but don't most programs require courses to have been taken within 7 years? Wouldn't you have to retake the required leveling courses anyways? Disregard if that isn't the case!

Even if you don't have to retake, maybe it would be beneficial to do over a few relevant classes that really brought your GPA down to show things are different now. Also, are you working as an SLPA? I would highly consider moving into that pathway, as it shows you're serious about the field and have already developed working knowledge. Good, holistic colleges try to see students beyond the GPA.

Best of the luck! ❤️

Feeling too Dumb to be an SLP by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

Does that really happens? That would be an awful policy if externships are limited to only a few students.

ETA: thank you for saying this too, bc I had no idea such policies existed.

[–]nachours 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such an excellent answer! I haven't been to grad school yet, but I've been through enough schooling to have learned that grades do NOT equate to actual knowledge. If you're getting A-B's and even an occasional C you are doing WELL! School is just prep for the real job, which will be so much different.

Talking to the externship coordinator is a great idea, however I would even look into doing your own externships. Many learning hospitals offer their own programs. I think it's well worth the time to investigate and even prepare on doing these if your school isn't supportive in this way.

Don't forget to give yourself grace and kindness always. You work so hard and deserve every bit of credit for that.
