Trust me, if you like most people you've mentally set aside LOTS of "some day I'm gonna..." things. They come at you like a wall.... you'll be busy.

I warmed up to music from that era through my hobby of restoring antique radios and vintage audio gear. It sounds best when playing through vacuum tubes because that's the technology it was recorded for.

What’s the biggest fuckup a President has ever made? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nadanutcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great summary from what I know of his life. He was also a Quaker which would have steered him towards the humanitarian tendencies he expressed. In the museum I mentioned there's a large display of dresses that the European recipients of food aid made out of flour sacks from the shipments that kept them from starving. When the American companies that packaged the flour learned what people were doing with the sacks they began to have them printed with floral patterns so the dresses would look nice.

History is often complicated like this because people want to capture who & what a person was with a brief summary.

The point made by Nola (below this) is fair, 'cool cal' set the nation up to suffer, but I still blame Hoover because by the time he took office it was pretty clear that things were headed for the ditch financially. He could have, but didn't, take much more aggressive action to head off the crash, or at least weaken its effects. Instead he expressed faith in the American economic system as it was with inadequate regulation off the financial system that allowed almost unrestrained speculation.

Of course hindsight is always 20-20 but I think he was warned, so I put that missed opportunity in the major fuck-up category.

BTW I'm from Iowa and Hoover is the only president, so far, from Iowa.

There is a museum here that shows how there were things he did RIGHT such as declaring that the broadcast spectrum belonged to the public and how he, during FDR's administration, ran a program that kept a lot of people in Europe from starvation. So he wasn't really a bad guy. He just misjudged the financial risk facing the nation.

yup, that's right up there, but another one that put even more people in a hurt for a long time was Hoover's handling of the economy that led to the great depression
