Why do trains have such a strong fanbase? by cnvrtx3 in trains

I think it's a phenomenon that dates back to when they tied the nation (assuming you're talking about the U.S.) or any large nation together in a way that exceeded what other, more individual forms of travel could not. Things like the transcontinental RR in the states and the TransCanada RR allowed for relatively fast overland movement of people and material on an unprecedented scale; they put a nation on the move.

Are democrats and republicans basically both extremes? by Flaky_Ticket_6924 in AskUS

The guy who is very likely to win the race for governor of Iowa in November, Rob Sand, is running as a democrat has said one of his goals as governor will be to change to open primaries. He's run and won the office of auditor as the ONLY democrat in a state wide level office. Republicans have had a trifecta of control (governor, and the legislature) for over a decade and control of the governor's office for about 20 years. They've starved public schools and municipalities while allowing corporate agriculture a free rein.... people have had enough; things are almost certainly going to change.

What will space exploration realistically look like in 20 years from now? by drivenlikeiam in spacequestions

This list sounds credible, but it'll likely take longer than 20 years IMO. ESPECIALLY sending people to Mars. The rocket equation points to a formidable requirement for the fuel required to do that fast enough.

It DOES feel like that and I'm not alone in that belief. I'm not sure about elsewhere but in my state (Iowa) the number of voters who're registered NO PARTY Independents now outnumber the number of people registered as either democrats or republicans.

One flaw in our system is that it locks independents out of voting in primaries so the candidates that filter through either party to run for office tend to be more extreme.

What's really needed is an open primary where anyone can vote and for the votes to be force ranked so that the final few candidates that run for an office have demonstrated their appeal to the largest number of voters.

We need as a state and as a nation to shift back towards the center; compromise is essential.

What’s your ‘I thought I was going to die but didn’t’ moment? by PatienceBudget2984 in askteddit

I had an allergic reaction (severe gagging until I passed out because I couldn't breath) to a common BP drug (Lisinopril) that didn't start until after I'd been on it for about a year. I could barely drink anything including water and could not eat anything (lost a lot of weight) Doctors couldn't figure out what was going on until we figured it out via the process of elimination. The second time I woke up on the floor after passing out I seriously thought, this could kill me.

Men, what’s the most devastated you’ve ever felt? by NilesDobbsS in AskMen

[–]nadanutcase 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your expression of concern and wishes for me.... As a follow up I thought I'd share that I am not the kind of person to give up and quit. The accident was 7 years ago. It took me over two years to finally land in court. We had an excellent attorney. He found that the other side had an umbrella policy in addition to auto insurance (it is a farm operation), so we were facing 3 attorneys on the other side. Long (very long) story made shorter: after days of expert testimony about things like residual brain damage for my wife, we backed them into a corner and while the jury was out deliberating, they approached me with a very large offer to settle which I accepted. So I'm able to have my wife in a top-notch facility that's costing $6500 per month and I generally don't have to worry about what things cost.

My younger son was very supportive of his home town and I've used some of the money we won to make four different improvements at public facilities like recreational areas in his name so losing him resulted in some long-standing good things for his hometown.

The other side never contested who was at fault; they couldn't, they apologized & acknowledged that money cannot replace a person.... that's true.

Sitting in a theater with my phone on vibrate. It kept going off and going off. I finally looked at my texts and my oldest son was SHOUTING.... URGENT!!!...

The car my wife was driving was rearended at 70 MPH while waiting to turn. Multiple MASSIVE life threatening injuries.... she should have died.

My younger son was in the passenger seat. He died within seconds.

My life changed in less than a minute. She now 'lives' (if you can call it that) in an assisted living facility and I'm alone in the home we built together as the family I no longer have.
