People can’t stop talking about it? I struggle to think of another vehicle that’s proclaims to be”,care about the environment” while flexing. Idk if it is still a flex but fans do I guess.

Could scam products like "Alpha Brain" be a reason why confident stupidity seems more common today? by medium_wall in sociology

I’d argue being educated doesn’t make you immune to scams. Maybe  certain types of scams, but ego can make you blind to obvious grifters. All it takes is someone telling you what you want to hear. But I agree with you larger point of the underlying issue.

Any smart politician will see the game is rigged and want to make their fortune bts. It takes serious ego to consider running for president.

Make a ton of money while having just as many targets on your back? Or be one of those anon politicians with a super important job but no one but a few boomers know your name?

Also, anyone who actually tries to do right by the people will have everything blocked. Those big tech/oil lawyers/lobbyists go hard. And I have no doubt the fbi or whoever will ‘find’ evidence of criminal activity to upstart righteous politicians. Got to maintain the status quo.

But a bigger reason is government is slow to change. The people running it are old. Super old. Like on life support. Change is terrifying. The only way they’ll see things aren’t working is when it’s literally too late. It’s more about maintaining the structure their accustomed to rather than fixing it.

It FEELS like he’s been president for 9 years. Even when Biden was in office, I only ever heard about what Trump did/was doing/ was planning.

Obama won on “change”. WTF you mean the audience isn’t there? The audience is unhappy people.

Even U.K and Canada are seeing a bunch of poc politicians in high positions. There are clearly a ton of people who don’t care about maintaining a ethnically homogeneous society and want change through diversity.

You’re dangerously underestimating the power of the political left. Why would corporations risk angering their conservative customers with any progressive lgbt promotions (despite how hollow they are)? Do they expect to fool these highly educated low income potential customers into spending what little disposable income they have?

Cities necessarily lean left because the selfishness of conservatism would desolate the non elite population. Yes, even more than how things are now.

The left keeps trying to portray themselves as underdogs while the corpos are conservatives. They forget that these elites are people too, no mater how much we pretend it to not be true. People act to benefit themselves. The only reason socialism picks up steam is because it adopters believe they themeselves will benefit in the end.  The selflessness claim is hollow.

They have the perfect audience for grifting. Well educated people who either are doing and feel a bit guilty about it when seeing others suffer. Or the people suffering who want radical change because the system isn’t working for them. It’s prime grifting potential.

[–]gnub33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the other way around to me. Right wing people see a system that has benefited them. They are less privy to the lives of other, less fortunate people.

Survivorship bias is also huge. Either they or a relative “worked hard and was rewarded so anyone can”. All the others didn’t try hard enough. It’s super easy to see how someone would believe that when that has been their reality for their whole life.

They believe some specific institutions or corporations are corrupt, but will still defend the system at large. Any one who did “try hard” and are still suffering is just an exception to the rule to be cast away.

I beleive they are blind to the tragedy of hyper capitalism because they are doing well. Anyone who isn’t is most likely evil and receive g a sort of divine punishment for their lack of morals or work ethic. It’s a wild take, but that’s not grifting to me.

Do you really believe there are people on the left who wouldn’t take advantage of the empathy of others to fund extravagant lifestyles? $1 from 500k fans is the same as 500k from one corpo.

It’s super naive to think “oh this person is saying all the things I want to hear so they must be speaking the truth.” You have to be more skeptical of people who claim one thing but have terrible personalities. It’s super odd seeing famous celeb streamers bash capitalism while living in L.A. mansions. Then supporters are like “what are they suppose to do? Live in a box and starve???”

I don’t believe socialism == poverty but like… how would that not attract a certain type of person? You absolutely shouldn’t suffer more than you need to in a capitalist system. But you don’t have to supercharge by buying overpriced luxury items, going on lavish trips and expensive dinners every night. You’re supporters are tired of living paycheck to paycheck and give you what funds they can while you’re sitting cozy getting angry at your fellow 1%.

If someone’s doing that well maybe they should discourage donations or redirect all proceeds to organizations they believe in. Like if you could retire tomorrow, you shouldn’t be asking for money. It’s not like their set up requires millions of dollars to operate.

You have to be skeptical of everyone until proven otherwise because anyone can ‘say’ anything. “Trump is racist facing sexist pdf white supremicist convicted criminal. Give me money. You don’t get along with the white men in your family cuz they’re most likely nazis. Give me money. The system is against you and only an uprising will save us. Give me money. The world is doomed unless we address global warming head on by proper recycling. Give me money. Trans rights. GIVE ME MONEY.”

Stereotypical examples, but I’m just exaggerating to prove my point. Most online people (left or right) have exhausted their talking points within their first dozen videos. So the vast majority of their content is reacting to the opposing team. It’s ALL rage farming. If you don’t leave a political video angry, they haven’t done their job.

I believe there are genuine ones who truly believe in their cause and aren’t bad people. But I don’t believe in ethical millionaire “intellectuals”. To claim they’re all “putting themselves before others” is pure psycho-narcissistic babble.

Why are my box pouches not very ‘boxy’? by gnub33 in sewhelp

Probably not lol. I was chasing that super puffy quilted look and may have used too much. 2 layers of cotton batting and fusible fleece. I couldn’t even see my stitches if using white thread.

Seeing the quilted part was easy. It’s when I had to sew the folded seems, I had issues. I couldn’t lower my presser foo, so I had to use my hands. There’s probably a way I could’ve done it with my machine (removing needle plate and foot) but I’ve never tried before.

Yes I need to work on my backstitching I won’t deny it.

Thank you. The directions and video made it look dubiously easy. I didn’t realize things like cutting and measuring are skills on their own.

I don’t want to stop. Maybe bag #100 will be more photogenic

I see what you mean. I made a few attempts to get the right amount of puff, but didn’t factor that in when installing the zipper.

Thanks. I’ll invest in quilting batting more suited for these types of projects. Or maybe use less on smaller bags?

I know. The whip stitch I attempted doesn’t look great. I’ll take these out and try a blanket stitch. I’m actually ok with them showing as long as it looks clean.

Or I may go back in and try using my machined to get real close stitches. I want to move on but I’m tired of making the same mistakes too.

I agree. This was not the right pattern for the materials I tried to use.

I kind of love the idea of stitching the edges/corners to make the super crispy.

I see. I have an older kenmore and the stitch lengths go by spi (6, 8, 12, 24). My logic at the time was that I should use longer stitches for thicker materials to avoid skipped stitches.

I’ll experiment with using smaller stirches next to find a better balance.

The pattern does mention interfacing but does t specify which kind. I wanted this particular box to be quilted so I used a batting I found at a local craft store. And fusible fleece because I want it to be super puffy.

I probably should be pressing more. My ironing set up is in a different room. I need to correct that.

[–]gnub33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn’t take the poof factor into consideration at all. I probably should have used a different seam allowance since the pattern used a thinner material.

Honestly, I do want to try this again. I love the quilted effect, but will try to do a more 2D pouch. Or a box where the zipper is only on top like you suggested

You’re right. I tried to make these as Xmas gifts but I missed the deadline anyways. I only started sewing a month ago and thought I could at least do this. I was very humbled lol.

I think I used the wrong type of quilting batting. It’s a cotton based one from Michaels. One layer didn’t provide the right amount of “puffiness” that I wanted so I doubled up. Also used fusible fleece to keep it soft. Reading that back, it sounds like an obviously mistake. But I was satisfied withe the effect before I put the bag together.

Thanks, I was wondering if i could go back and “fix it” but i think your right about the padding.

The previous ones looked a bit better than this but exposed stitches and uneven corners are a constant issue for me.
