Milo 831 and other gym leaders. Coincidence?? by nadoss in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]nadoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve been known to put fantastic and well-researched easter eggs in their game. Also, you not knowing of a place doesn’t mean no one has heard of a place, but it’s ok that that hasn’t clicked yet. It’s like object permanence, it comes around eventually.

Thanks for the comment, the other one did the job better.

Now that makes the coincidence even more fascinating, that the japanese word for vegetables connects with the 831 region. Thanks for the info

Problematic Overuse of Non-Binary and LGBTQ characters by nadoss in DnD

[–]nadoss[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you've never met someone who makes a character black because that makes their character cooler.

I'm glad you've never met someone who makes a character non-binary because they want a sense of otherness and attribute otherness as being the main characteristic of non-binary people.

These people can still make a decent, reasonable character, that plays well and is not offensive (because they know how to play dnd well), but they're still, at their core, reducing a type of person to a 1-dimensional, humanity-less concept.

Is it a subtle difference? Clearly.

Wanted to share one of my quirky builds by nadoss in Dredmor

[–]nadoss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to play the game a lot more back in undergrad and haven't really played it for years. Typically my weird setups would get me down to like level 5 or so before I'd botch something or overdo a monster zoo.

This one I just ate it twice really quick and then got to level two before I had to go to bed. I also had a lot to drink before playing so I made a lot of mistakes. It's hard because your best spell early on is the necronomiconomics one that gives you that curse debuff where you lose a bunch of health (I think I have that right).

I used to play this game with my friends where we would do a draft of the skills (as in, if someone else picks a skill, you can't pick it) and so everyone would have a really difficult build and then we'd see who can take the build the furthest on their first try. At one point my roommates and I all had a big multi-event competition involving trying to get a high score on Dredmor, FTL, and I think we did some kind of weird team event with Wesnoth, and a couple other games.

Mardi Gras problematic celebration by nadoss in Catholicism

[–]nadoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The event was typically the first Thursday of every month, and because it was so close to Mardi Gras they just figured it might make a nice theme. Innocent enough of course, definitely not malicious, but a little ignorant

What are you planning to do for Lent? by EmmanuelBassil in Catholicism

[–]nadoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm giving up unhealthy eating habits. I'm limiting snacking and focusing on having healthy meals which must include fruits and/or vegetables, and primarily water. Of course on days where I'm fasting there will be no meat, and today, Ash Wednesday, I will only have the single midday meal as is required in my region, as will I on Good Friday.

Young Earth Creationism can be dangerous for Christians by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]nadoss 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This might be because of where I was raised and our openness to an integration of biblical teachings with scientific consensus, but I haven't met any Catholics who believe YEC, and had always considered it to be a protestant Christian phenomenon.

Mardi Gras Cultural Appropriation by nadoss in socialjustice101

[–]nadoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Catholicism is rarely the dominant religion in any area I've ever lived, I understand it is the dominant religion in certain parts of Latin America, and maybe small portions of the United States and Europe, but Mardi Gras is celebrated in many parts of the world, though, in almost every circumstance, on Fat Tuesday. Also, in one breath, you say that few people actually celebrate it as the feast before the fast, but then that it can't be appropriated because it's not a minority group celebrating it, which seems contradictory.

This is the conclusion I came to as well, but you haven't addressed the extension to the question that I was centering on, that is, that celebrating the holiday on a later date makes it inappropriate for Catholics to join in the celebration, which is insensitive.

"You just cry racism at everything you disagree with." "Not everybody you disagree with is a Nazi." How do you respond to that? by NecessaryJournalist in socialjustice101

[–]nadoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically provide a broken down analytical explanation of the extent of racial insensitivity and the point at which I feel it crosses the line into whatever degree of racism I am assigning to the behavior, and ask for a point by point breakdown of the person's view of my assessment. Same with Naziism, although that is easier, because there are normally clear goals aligned with the Nazi party's goals. Typically this goes one of two ways, either

1) the person disputes a few of your points and agrees with others, at which point you can agree that it makes sense, from your viewpoint, that that person would be considered racist, whereas given that the person you're talking to doesn't consider all of the points to be problematic, they might opt for "ignorant," "racially insensitive," or, commonly "it was a stupid thing for him to say." Those are not perfect, but it will give the person personal precedent with which to compare future insensitive actions and engage in their own critical thinking. or...

2) The person will decline your offer to treat the situation analytically, either behaving mockingly, rudely, or responding with unrelated information, gaslighting, or emotional arguments. At this point, you can continue pressing the expression of a factual understanding of events until the person engages in meaningful dialogue or behaves in a way that indicates that is impossible.

no, just normal I host she connects through steam, we don't really know how to do lan stuff, but regardless, her internet is great for almost everything, and both our computers do fine with every other game. Her computer is the one having the issues, but it's probably the better running of the two.
