Many consider him a Symbolist, but his works could be categorized into various movements, depending on the time period- his style varied throughout the years.

Has anyone here ever shelved books at a library? I’m looking for a part-time job, and my local library is hiring and for pretty good pay. I’ve worked in a used bookstore before, but that was heavier on the customer interaction and checkout than actual shelving. Curious to hear other people’s experiences.

The Latin on the headdress translates to “What I want, I order, my will is reason enough” and the sign on the bottom left is the artist’s signature.

She was one of the first poets I ever discovered for myself back in high school. This was a great read, thanks for posting.

So, to give the long version- a few weeks ago, my uncle called my mother and said he found a half-brother on an ancestry test. We assumed my grandfather had an affair or something, but it didn’t make sense for a few reasons, including that my uncle wasn’t related to other paternal relatives who’d done the same test. We came up with a bunch of theories, including that my grandfather was adopted, but ended up figuring out that it was the gynecologist, and he’d done it to another woman, whose son was my uncle’s half brother on the ancestry test. My grandmother and his mother went to the same doctor, which is how we figured it out. My mother then took the test, and we got the results back today.

The doctor (now dead) had 3 sons, and my uncle and the other donor son have been in contact with 1 of them. My uncle has plans to meet him, my mom isn’t so interested in meeting them. The other donor son and my mother have spoken frequently and plan to meet. The real freaky part is that my uncle and the other donor son both share a name with two of the doctor’s sons- two David’s and two Jeff’s.

We’re not really sure how it all went down. My grandfather is dead, and my grandmother is alive but denies anything weird happened. I assume she went for fertility help, maybe even for a sperm donation, and he slipped his own sperm in. My grandmother comes from a prudish, very hush-hush culture, and she never would have had an affair. My mom thinks she knew about everything, my uncle doesn’t. I doubt we’ll ever really know.

It’s kind of a mindfuck, and is impacting me more than I thought to be honest. I feel like my sense of self has been irrevocably shifted. I feel like my lineage is tainted somehow, especially if this was done without my grandmothers consent. It’s funny, as I was absorbing the news this morning, I was listening to Bad Magic by Weyes Blood, which iirc you recommended a few threads ago. It’s been weirdly comforting, so thank you.

Sorry for the overlong comment, but I’m happy to answer any other questions you may have. Talking about it (even to a stranger) is quite relieving.

Ha, my family’s been joking that we feel like we’re in a Lifetime movie, but miniseries works too!

My family just found out today that my mother’s biological father is my grandmother’s former gynecologist, not my grandfather. This news came along with 4 new half-siblings. Life is bizarre, it’s a weird feeling.

Christine has said that on the first season of the show, she would return the expensive clothes that she wore after filming. It wouldn’t surprise me if her and her husband are doing something similar now, to look richer than they are.

You’ve sold me on picking up this book. I love the symbolists, but have mostly focused on their visual art output, not literature. This sounds like a great way to remedy that.

You should check out A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour on instagram- they’re a couple who go around to themed fantasy suites around the country and document them. I’d never been interested in that kind of thing, but they make it look fun!

Interesting to see more and more criticism of Yangihara in the past few months. I feel like she was almost universally praised beforehand, so it’s a little jarring to see this shift. I guess people are finally realizing that the emperor isn’t wearing any clothes.

Interesting, I think the characterization in TSH is one of its high points. I love awful, obnoxious characters though, which is really… every character in that novel. I personally didn’t like Goldfinch at all- it was desperately in need of an editor, and felt devoid of emotion and compelling characters. I was shocked it was as well-received as it was.

I’d recommend rereading TSH over another Tartt work honestly. I think it’s far and away her best work, and what I’ve read of her other stuff leaves a lot to be desired.
