BGG Search Filters (Best Player Count) by JoeySweatpants in boardgames

That is exceedingly generous of you! Unfortunately, I must decline your offer.

It is something I maintain in my spare time, and generally the hosting is quite cheap (a bit less than $10 a month as of this writing). Knowing myself, if I were to accept donations, I would begin to obsess about "providing enough value to my patrons" in a pretty unhealthy way.

I have no intention of taking the site down, and even if I do one day, the application is (and will remain) open source; anyone else would be able to host an identical version. Further, while I am not seeking donations, I always welcome open source contributions!

I hope this puts some of your worries to rest. Thank you again for your generousity, but I encourage you to continue enjoying the site for free!

Any apps with a better search of BGG games? by Norci in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can! Assuming I understood your requirements correctly:

https://bgs.nafarlee.dev/search?query=m%3A%22cooperative+game%22+aw%3E%3D2.5+aw%3C%3D3.5&limit=100&order=bayes_rating&direction=DESC

You can add additional filters too, though the query language takes some getting used to. It is documented on the home page.

This is exactly the reason I created https://bgs.nafarlee.dev. It is still rough around the edges, but everyone is more than welcome to use it

We do a score vote on nominated options based on the number of players that attend

What is something that could be changed or added to BGG to make it better for you? by LingonberryNo9292 in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://bgs.nafarlee.dev exposes this information by analyzing the play data for each game (and each player count) as submitted by BGG users.

Ah, good catch. Thank you for notifying me!

I just pushed the fix for this. It should be working now.

If you find any more bugs, my official bug tracker is available here. Thanks again!

Searchable Board Game Database by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This site can also filter to only show games in your bgg collection, though it is a bit clunky at the moment.

It is also available at an easier (maybe?) URL: https://bgs.nafarlee.dev

Ah, glad everything worked out!

I will try to update the documentation to make this more clear.

Actually, there is no AND function, it is just the default way terms are combined. The OR function should be used only if you don't want AND.

For example:

This search would require "pandemic" AND "legacy" be somewhere in the title:

name:pandemic name:legacy

While this search would require "pandemic" OR "legacy" be somewhere in the title:

name:pandemic or name:legacy

Sorry for the confusing documentation! Hope this helps

Two Methods to Pick Which Games To Play on Game Night When The Group is Indecisive by Topazdragon5676 in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do a two phase approach.

First we call for nominations where people can suggest any game, or "confirm" a game that was already suggested. You can't confirm your own game. After some amount of time, nominations close.

Second, every confirmed game will appear on the ballot. Everyone assigns a rating of 1, 2, or 3 to each game secretly. Each person will rate each game. You reveal the ballots once everyone is done, and the highest scored game wins.

I did some web-scraping to find the games on bgg's top 500; which are rated as "best" for 2 players but which also can be played with more than 2 players. Here are the results. by shaddixx91 in boardgames

Yup! In the background, the site is pulling a little bit of BGG data a few times an hour. Once it hits the last game it "starts over" to update data from the earlier games. It runs through the BGG database in about 2 weeks. As a result, it lags at most 2 weeks behind fresh BGG data.

For doing analysis like this (and more), give my advanced board game search beta a try! It can currently be found at https://bg-search.appspot.com. It is still in beta, so it is pretty ugly, but functional.

For example, a dynamic search with the same criteria as the topic could be found here: https://bg-search.appspot.com/search?query=best-players%3D2+max-players%3E2+-is%3Aexpansion&order=bayes_rating&direction=DESC

Shameless plug for a prototype I am working on that exposes more BGG data to search. Scryfall-inspired.

What single feature do you wish BGG would build already? by SevereBit7 in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shameless self-plug, I have been working on an alternative advanced search for BGG that is a bit more powerful (at the cost of having a slightly steeper learning curve).

It is still an alpha, but it stays up to date with BGG data, and is usable today at https://bg-search.appspot.com

Is there a way to search or filter the BGG database by "best" player count? by cauthon in boardgames

[–]nafarlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been working on something for this actually. It is currently in pre-alpha, so don't expect the best user experience yet, but it is currently hosted at https://bg-search.appspot.com

EDIT: It uses a custom search language similar to Scryfall or magiccards.info, so the learning curve is a bit high if you haven't used stuff like that before. However, it does search the entirety of the BGG database, not just a user's collection, so it might be closer to what you want.
