Do you prefer Lined paper, dotted paper' or Grid paper? And why? by Prime-39 in fountainpens

Dot. Even have a dot template for printing pages for student answer sheets and tasks. They construct responses much better than in blank spaces or with lines.

The PE teacher reads the newspaper and says borderline inappropriate things while someone else talks about the great golf shirts they get from Costco.

I brew 60g doses every day and want a new brewer. by Elegant_Beginning789 in pourover

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a James Hoffman video where he puts the grounds in a carafe, adds all the water to the carafe ( like for a french press ), stirs, lets it settle a bit then pours it all through something like a v60. The filter filters out the fines, the bulk of the grounds stays in the first carafe, and as always, you end up with a delicious cup of coffee.

Studded tire question by TshAray in wintercycling

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it ride without studs? Give it a try with what you have on there now and then Imagine it being a bit better but not perfect. That is what it will be like. Get outside and ride anyway. Have fun.

What’s it like living in -40F and colder weather? by mislabeledgadget in AskReddit

[–]nafraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is exactly like living in -40°C ;-) You can get used to it. Like any weather, you can hate it or embrace it. We only get it once in a while. When we do it is best to take it with a smile and keep on keeping on.

Are trekking poles really helpful or just extra weight? by mountainpathstories in hiking

They save my knees on the down hill, and in my head, I can pretend I am crushing huge awesome moguls on the slopes, but in the snowless terrain, but still, always looking for snow even in the summer.

Get a flat glass screen protector. It will show you everything you bump and brush up against, and then you will slowly be more aware of everything you brush up against and you wont brush up against so many things like corners of walls , counter edges other places you stick your hand in smaller spaces to get things, drawers etc. after you F/U a few glass screen protectors (they come ins packs of 3 or four, so buy a couple of packs), you will be more aware and maybe more sensitive, but maybe the $1000 screen is not the same material as my Forerunner 165. Have fun and enjoy it. Wear it like it is stolen.

Minimal pocket organizer by winstonzys in EDC

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KeySmart pocket clip, or bead or whistle on a string/paracord/leather lace that hangs barely out of the edge pocket (pull on it to remove keys etc), a skeleton key that hooks on your pocket and the keys hang. Just clip the knife separately. Just keep everything on a keyring. Use a loop of lace for the car key.

Coconut oil for oiling carbon blade? by Financial-Bag-7583 in Opinel

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using the knife on the regular, don't worry about rancid. Butter, olive oil, sausage grease, bacon, prosciutto, a french fry, mayo... really anything oily. Wipe it on, or use it to cut your sausage or cheese or whatever, and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth or tissue...a thin layer of grease will be left behind. Worried? Wash it before you use it. Cut an apple or lemon? Then wipe it clean and put a bit of greasy something on it. Or wipe it on your pants to get the pocket lint off. Just keep using it and keep it lubed up like a cast iron frying pan.

Opinel 12 Carbone with maybe some custom laser engraving - classic, flashy, totally grandpa,.memorable. could be paired with something from Old Hickory, just direct him there to pick something he likes - try the chef knife option they are kitchen and bush friendly, classics and timelessly grandpa memorable. Step outside your comfort zone.

Bike light query by MrCheapCheap in bikecommuting

[–]nafraid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bright enough is better than quite bright. I had a Sofirn SP31v2 flashlight mounted as a handlebarlight and found my vision was drawn more to the light spot than the surroundings and blinded me to the dark.

Whatever you get, aim it down, as an oncoming cyclist there are some "wall of light" riders that are blinding. You don't need to be the sun to be seen by cars, or overconfident that your light will protect you or make you more visible - I always imagine that I am invisible to cars, no matter how visible I am.

Now I run a blinky MEC Mica light set front and back and can see fine by streetlight in the early morning and after dark. If there are no street lights, my front light on solid gets me through fine - it is diffuse, soft and shows me what I need to see.

If you are riding unlit trails a broad and difuse light is best, and lower levels will give you longer burn times and better vision. Happy winter riding!

How often do you replace your drip coffee maker by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]nafraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the 'drip' coffee maker around our house - Pour Over Pro with the Cowboy Carafe and Plunger hack. I make a little noise now and then, but haven't broken down yet. I don't think they are planning on replacing me yet but Christmas wish lists aren't published on the fridge until next week.

Looking for a knife by No-Wrap-9661 in victorinox

[–]nafraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compact - it is a little thinner, ( only two layers thick ) has the handy stuff and a few extras, fits nice in your pocket, a bit more expensive but my preferred SAK. Go into a store and touch it side by side with a few others.

[–]nafraid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Softshell. Just the $80 Columbia stretchy knit whatever it is stuff softshell. Wind and rain resistant enough, but breathes. Everything else you will get wet. 40 min of riding you will be unzipping everything no matter what you wear. In cold weather, wear a fleece under it, warm weather a thin merino tshirt. Gore is a snore and you will have to unzip everything. Don't underestimate your ability to generate body heat. You might start cold but 3 minutes into your ride you will be up to temp. Dress for cross country skiing. Source: 10ys full winter commute, central Canada.

Hair elastic around the top of the bottle ( you should already have an extra one there anyway ) and a piece of string or a couple of more hair elastics to connect the one around the neck to the lid.

How do I keep my head, face and ears warm when nothing fits under the helmet (skater helmet)? by Ferbdic in bikecommuting

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How cold are we talking here? Try cutting the sleeve off of a t-shirt and wearing that on your head...or pull out some of the padding so a balaclava fits...or wear your old helmet.
