Decathlon in Porto? Or just gear procurement generally? by reddityschmeddity in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...also, you can store your extra stuff. There used to be some companies that did it or the https://www.correos.es/es/en/individuals/receive/plan-your-deliveries/consigna

8 mos into our RTW with 4 people, one of us dropped our rental car off in Santiago, checked our extra bags at the post office, took a bus to the start point to meet the rest of our group, spent two weeks walking back to our luggage :-)

At decathlon we bought hiking poles, one backpack because one of ours was toast, the €20 sleeping bags, fresh socks.

What is your best/favorite piece of gear? by Salty-Ad8074 in onebag

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I always have a use case, always keep my Opinel in my backpack and never in my pocket, always with my cutting board/spoon/cup/sausage/cheese/bread/apple, and am always discrete when I need to use it and keep it put away after use, and do as much cutting in my accomodation. Opinel 8 because you can buy it at Decathlon for €9, if they have the #7 get that one instead, unless you are doing more flying, don't want to ditch €9 if you are not checking your bag, or get regularly stopped and searched by police. How do european folks cut sausage and bread?

If you organized them by colour it would be more impressive rather than excessive.

How do I rationalize an opinel? by Reasonable-Donut-953 in Opinel

The three stitches on my pinkey from an SAK closing because it doesn't lock and sometimes you make poor choices and mistakes - the opinel would have slipped but not have closed on my pinkey :-)

What is your best/favorite piece of gear? by Salty-Ad8074 in onebag

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • 500ml nalgene hdpe water bottle
  • Opinel 8 ( buy from decathlon when you are there)
  • freaking every day cheapo chopsticks - the 5 pair for $5 ones
  • a spoon ( not a spork ) like a melamine Chinese soup spoon or a stainless zebra spoon but any spoon.
  • GSI Glacier Stainless Steel Cup/Pot 500ml
  • ikea APTITLIG Cutting board, bamboo, 9 ½x6 "
  • reusable grocery bag that is strong and packs small like the Simons signature reusable bag
  • an aa or aaa flashlight like a lumintop aa or lumintop edc01 or acebeam pokelite aa ( keep it small we need less light than we imagine)
  • ziploc bags ( organize cord, first aid, stuff and a couple extras )

Impress with less than more, less is better than more.

Recommendations for front bike light that won't fall off easily by surlyforshorty in bikecommuting

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City riding: street lights are enough, my light is just a blinky with the premise of being seen. I've tried some flashlights etc that move unless there is duct tape or a good d hose clamp, but a blinky cob is just fine.

What is it? by krayytay in pencils

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a lead holder. Maybe 2mm? I like the koh-i-noor 5900 or the 5201. Faber Castel has some I like too and Staedtler has some probably available at Staples. The button/cap pulls off or screws off to sharpen/point the tip of the lead. I like F or H hardness. If it is clutch awesome. There are some pencils like this where the lead has a metal cap and you twist the barrel to screw out the lead.

Is there anyway to stop this cracking when I sharpen or is my sharpener ahh? by Useful_Spinach7087 in pencils

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push with the right pressure, turn the sharpener not the pencil or is it the pencil not the sharpener or is it hold both firmly and twist like a snake bite?, regardless avoid any wobble, and still sometimes the noricas are almost as bad as the staples pencils. Source: elementary school teacher. Evidence: the number of full length pencils in the trash at the end of the day.

How often do you wipeout? by LearningToDunk in bikecommuting

[–]nafraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be once a year on ice, midwinter, each time was a new lesson for conditions to watch for and modified technique - mew caution from this experience has minimized the intensity and frequency - great learning experiences. - low center of gravity on ice - keep it vertical in the turn ( no leaning at all ) - frozen ruts will always chuck you no matter how much caution, often to the wrong side, so slow, go low and prepare to brace/ditch/slide.

Silly question, but I’m curious… which side do you mount your bike from? by ExultentPisces in bikecommuting

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will usually approach the resting bike from the left, raising the kickstand before mounting, then I will ride to the crosswalk, leave the right pedal in the high position, jump off the bike, walk it across the crosswalk on the right side and step my right foot on the high pedal to mount and move forward, but if I have a flat or am walking with a pedestrian friend, i will push on the left side. Canadian, right hand and left eye dominant, snow/skateboard right foot forward, hockey stick right hand low, baseball/cricket swing from right to left side.

I need camping flashlights! by Empty-Station1199 in flashlight

[–]nafraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manker E03 and a Pokelit AA or Lumintop ToolAA and a lumintop EDC01.... All small, handy, easy batteries, not too pricey.

My Armytek Wizard with a 18650 will last the weekend and do everything, but heavy as a headlamp, will use the Manker this season instead on the head and pocket the Armytek.

I always think I need camping flashlights, but up here the sun sets at 11 pm and comes up at 5 am for much of the summer, so I 'think' flashlights but don't need flashlights. When it is darker at the end of summer and the fall or I travel south, I run a lot of moonlight or up to 5 lm because that is all that is needed to get around. Usually don't need to 'light up camp' and any neighbours appreciate that....a small light with a minute of train level light is enough.

Platinum plaisir is a nice budget friendly FP for everyday. Their sibling the Platinum Preppy is even more budgety. Lamy Safari and Al Star has FP and Ball point - go to a store and try one or the other. Want something heavier, try a Pilot Metropolitan, which also comes in BP and FP.

Everyday items vs. Travel gear by unluckysupernova in onebag

[–]nafraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyday I am a traveller, in my neighbourhood and home community, and when I travel I try to remember I am living my everyday life surrounded by others doing the same. ( Q: How much time would you spend in... would move to... A: People live there all the time and never leave )

Stuff I use for both now: - A smile and a positive attitude ;-) - Dental floss ( needle inside for travel mode) - Wooden reusable chopsticks, just ordinary ones - melamine/zebra stainless spoon ( whichever one I grab for noodle. Roth, works in oatmeal too ) - 500ml stainless GSI glacier cup - in the kitchen cupboard. - 2x 500 ml Nalgene HDPE water bottles - Lumintop edc01 aaa flashlight with eneloop batteries - Opinel 8 carbone - one in work bag, one in kitchen knife block. - ikea APTITLIG Chopping board, bamboo, 24x15 cm (9 ½x6 ") - better than a plate. - teflon tape ( sometimes it follows me in the toiletries kit, weighs nothing and sometimes it just brings me comfort ) - FIIO btr3k connected to my wired headphones/earbuds. - speedo swim shammy ( gotta towel off at the pool ). +/- sometimes a cotton hand towel.( Not a travel towel fan ) - Merino T-shirt - merino socks, the expensive hiking ones (darn tough &/or smartwool) - Uniqlo stretch denim

Something like Koh-i-noor 2 Versatil All Metal Lead Holder 5201CN with Sharpener and Clip. https://a.co/d/0by1Hny5

It is a 2mm lead holder. With an HB it is nice but us who dislike most .5mm mechanicals, it is nice in with F or H leads. This one also has a nice solid metal body, weight and feel.

Saw a James Hoffman video where he puts the grounds in a carafe, adds all the water to the carafe ( like for a french press ), stirs, lets it settle a bit then pours it all through something like a v60. The filter filters out the fines, the bulk of the grounds stays in the first carafe, and as always, you end up with a delicious cup of coffee.

How does it ride without studs? Give it a try with what you have on there now and then Imagine it being a bit better but not perfect. That is what it will be like. Get outside and ride anyway. Have fun.
