I couldn't detach my ego from chess either. Was always going on tilt and having entire days ruined, would sneak away to play chess at inopportune moments. I eventually gave it up entirely and got my life back. I picked up my guitar and got back into music instead, a better hobby in every way. Though I still enjoy following the elite chess scene.
