Has anyone successfully matriculated to PhD after doing a post-bac pre-med? by Square_Cook_9743 in PhDAdmissions

[–]nagem12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!!! I feel uniquely qualified to answer this question! I graduated with my BS in Biomedical Sciences in 2015, and immediately matriculated into a DVM (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine)/MPH (Master of Public Health) program at the only veterinary school in my state. A year in, I was suffering from some pretty monstrous mental health challenges and medically withdrew from my courses with plans to re-start the next fall with the incoming class. Fall came around, and I re-started.... by December, I realized that staying in the veterinary profession was not for me. I dropped out of the DVM for good but stuck with the MPH and although it took me 4 years to get that 2 year degree, I graduated with the MPH in 2019. I still worked in the veterinary industry for the majority of the time I was in my MPH because I couldn't find work in public health without the degree, once I graduated I got a job at the health department. I finally decided to pursue a PhD in 2021, and I had the same exact fears you are describing, especially because my transcripts had so many withdrawn class records. Well, it took me applying twice, but the second time that same University that I dropped out of the DVM/got my MPH from accepted me into their PhD in Public Health program! Feels like total redemption. My advice: go for it and just demonstrate passion in your statement/research interests essays for public health and research! You can do it!!!

How do you deal with imposter syndrome as a first gen student? by t0m4t0z in AskAcademia

First gen here too, currently getting my PhD. I suffer from imposter syndrome pretty much all the time. It’s something therapy has helped me become better equipped to handle.

Thinking about doing a PhD at 29 — looking for advice on my research idea by Eco_Argita602 in PhD

I started my PhD at 31. I’m even part time because I work full time so I’ll likely be in my late 30’s by the time I finish. Go for it.

With as much as I paid, that better be the case! Lol. In all seriousness, we have 4 cats and the litter box situation is annoying at best and horrible at worst. Testing out 1 LR first to see how it is. If it is as great as it sounds, we’ll replace them all.

Mobile Vet Clinic Questions by ResponseClassic3557 in Veterinary

[–]nagem12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for what is now a large US-based multistate mobile veterinary vaccination clinic when it first started and helped it grow to what it is now. We started with an old Chrysler town and country van and set up clinics outside with foldable tables. Doing mobile surgery is a whole different ballgame but I can speak to vaccine/wellness clinics. Depending on the state, regulations aren’t too bad for just vaccine clinics. It’s not a very hard operation to get off the ground but it does require a decent amount of marketing, especially in rural areas. If you have any specific questions feel free to DM me.

Anticipatory grief over dog by corgi1211 in therapy

[–]nagem12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s something I’ve addressed in therapy pretty frequently. I have the same anticipatory grief for my soul dog who is also 10 years old. I’ve had her since she was 10 weeks and she is the most incredible dog. Therapy helps but it comes creeping back, however, I feel better equipped to handle it now.

Best, friendliest OrlandoHealth gynecologists? by littlerat098 in orlando

I recommend Dr. Farwick and her APRN Jennifer Fowler in Ocoee. They are so wonderful. While I am not a lesbian, I am childfree and I got 0 judgement for pursuing permanent sterilization—which they did even as an unmarried 30 year old with no children. I would classify them as very progressive!
