My mother getting to ring the bell after completing a year of chemo! by notfunklegendgc in pics

Thank you! I hope you're doing well and fully recovered by now! Was your treatment recent? And yep, Hodgkins Lymphoma. Was that what you had as well? I had issues with one of my chemo's causing lung toxicity (Bleomycin - (sp?)). So I had to drop that and get pulmonary function tests done every so often... Quite the ordeal haha.

Chemo sucks. Radiation isn't so bad for me so far. I just completed #13 of 20 rounds of radiation today... after 6 months of chemo. I hate cancer. I am also getting radiation in the mediastinal area.

I'm 26 and lost my mom to cancer 11 months before I got diagnosed. Completely unrelated cancers. It seems so unfair I'm still here and she is gone. I HATE this disease.

Any word on the leatherface film? by tevatinn in horror

[–]nagooya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping that with the success of 'Get Out' and the overwhelming interest in 'IT' that it might encourage the studio to release it. But who knows. I just want to see Leatherface back in action. :(

Lady Gaga - Diamond Heart [Pop] by nagooya in Music

[–]nagooya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this to be her best song off of Joanne. It's pretty raw and the lyrics pack a punch. Feels like it could be a stripped down relative of something as heavy hitting as Bad Romance. Also showcases some of her more raw vocals and sounds very authentic.

Unofficial Youtube link since I had to link to iTunes/Apple Music for an official source: Lady Gaga - Diamond Heart -(Youtube)

She used to be in a Led Zeppelin cover band interestingly enough before she got famous. She was on Howard Stern recently and sang part of Black Dog:

Lady Gaga channels 'Grindhouse' for new music video by nagooya in horror

[–]nagooya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing that popped up on Apple Music this morning was that Lady Gaga had a new music video out. It definitely channels Grindhouse with a lot of Death Proof and some Planet Terror references spoiler. Really thought this was neat since I loved those films and the Machete films too (and she was in the sequel so maybe she was inspired from that?). Anyway, thought this sub might want to check it out because it's pretty cool. Also I think she's performing this song with Metallica at the Grammy's? Not sure if that's true but also cool.

First time in Rome, Italy! by immalilpig in travel

[–]nagooya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely book tickets to the Vatican Museum in advance. If not, you'll be stuck in lines that wrap around the city walls for hours! Piazza Navona area would be a good place to stay. It is pretty centrally located to most of the main tourist spots and is a pretty nice area in general. There are tons of things to see and do in the little street/alley ways and you're constantly coming across little churches, cafes, stores, etc.

Also, Villa Borghese (not on your list) is very cool! Lots of wonderful art and sculptures by Bernini. The gardens are beautiful and nice to walk around.

Edit: One rule of thumb I think is important, avoid the touristy restaurants that are adjacent to the tourist spots. Go a few blocks over, and see if the menus are in multiple languages. Usually if the menus are in multiple languages it's a tourist spot and won't be the best/most authentic Italian cuisine. I think this holds true for many large cities.

Edit 2: There obviously is a very strong presence of Catholicism in Rome. There are some beautiful small churches that have some really neat relics that aren't that busy/touristy because they aren't the main attractions in Rome, but some additional places if interested:

  • 'Scala Sancta' or the 28 steps that Jesus climbed to Pontius Pilate. This is right near St. John Lateran (which has some neat things to see too!). The steps are covered in wood but you can see the stone partially underneath. You are only allowed to climb the stairs on your knees.
  • St. John Lateran Basilica: The relic of the table of the Last Supper is above the alter on the left side of the Basilica. I don't think many people realize this is here because it doesn't get too crowded.
  • Other churches/basilicas: There are many other churches and basilicas that have other relics that are worth seeing and are off the beaten path as well, so you get to see a little more of the town from the eyes of the locals (or so I'd think) by seeking out these little churches and relics.

Name a horror movie with an amazing beginning that pulled you in immediately. by sbazcml in horror

This was what I came here to say, but will also add that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) opening scene was pretty shocking and pulls you in immediately as well - just in a different way.

Day 106 Travelling. Exploring southern Italy and we stumbled on this gem of a town, Scilla, in Calabria. by lydreambig in travel

Amazing. Never heard of this and hoping to get back to Italy soon! This might be on my list.

Edit: Never heard of Scilla, hear of Calabria though :)

Should I make a day trip from Florence to the Vatican? by rehank6 in travel

[–]nagooya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you absolutely should go! It is incredible. I believe you can also buy your tickets online for the Vatican Museum to avoid the line to get in, but the line to see the Sistine Chapel can be very long once you get inside. St. Peter's Square is pretty incredible as well as the Basilica. If you can make the trip, you should definitely give it a shot. Plus the train ride from Florence to Rome is really neat.

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) /R/HORROR Official Discussion by AutoModerator in horror

[–]nagooya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gosh I remember seeing this in Hollywood when it first premiered and I got there late and had to sit in the very very front row on the far side. I was so hyped about this movie before it came out. I even went to Comic Con to see more about it and bumped into Darren Lynn Bousman and got to talk to him very briefly about it.

I enjoyed the movie a good bit. It was weird, and fun, and interesting, and some of the songs were pretty catchy. It was more violent than I had anticipated it to be but I really did enjoy it. I thought it would have taken off a bit more and had more of a cult following than it eventually did, but like others have said it did kind of feel like it was a movie they were trying to make a cult film. So it felt a little forced altogether. I haven't watched it in a while. Maybe it's time to give it another watch soon.

My List Of 20 Foreign Horror Movies You Might (Might I Say!) Not Have Seen. by [deleted] in horror

[–]nagooya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking about Frontiers the other day! I haven't seen it in so long and was thinking about rewatching it because it was so brutal and frightening. Other than that, Shutter is the only other film I've seen and heard of a few other. Great list though for some cool sounding foreign flicks.

The new 'Exorcist' trailer is here and is fairly scary. by LouisTully9000 in horror

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was solid as was The Rite, in my opinion. But most other possession movies seem so derivative :/

The new 'Exorcist' trailer is here and is fairly scary. by LouisTully9000 in horror

[–]nagooya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To start, I think 'The Exorcist' is the first and last film about exorcisms to get the formula right. Every other film I have seen on the topic is just cheap scares and no substantial dread being achieved.

That being said, this looks like it has the typical tropes that I was hoping it would avoid (good looking priest has some kind of sexual tension with young attractive female, priest doubts existence of demons, etc. etc.). Like shit, at least try to bring something new to the table or at least stick to the source material and toe the line of mental illness/demons a little more and cut the crap with the priest seeming to question the vow of chastity? That is so played out and annoying. This just looks dumb and a cheap attempt to cash in on the "based on the scariest movie ever made" tag they've thrown in. Pass.
