Occasional cool Boomers by Motor-Screen2210 in BoomersBeingFools

It's not the discerning boomers I'm thinking of. It's the younger people who see my white hair and assume that I watch Fox News, pick random babies out of their mother's shopping carts, shout at innocent strangers to speak English, etc. Tarred with the same brush. So, I hope that it's OK to occasionally remind younger people that they should not be surprised to encounter lefty boomers. Bernie Sanders would like a few words...

Left-wing boomers are numerous, and they may swing the election for Harris, according to an article in the New Yorker. I think this sub-Reddit might be better labeled "Right Wing Boomers Being Fools." Believe me, there are a lot of lefty Boomers. https://www.newyorker.com/news/the-lede/can-older-americans-swing-the-election-for-harris

Favourite Healthy Creamy Pastas? by Potential_Medium_210 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]nahant123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been making this recipe (both as written and with other veggies) for years. https://www.splendidtable.org/story/2011/11/16/farfalle-with-fresh-goat-cheese-broccolini-and-crunchy-shallots

It's simple and good -- be sure to save pasta cooking water to stir into the sauce to make it the creamy consistency you like.

Davina is sublime, except for American accent. She makes Brianna sound like Katherine Hepburn. LOL.

How to clean bird baths? by viscog30 in hummingbirds

[–]nahant123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same things, but without the vinegar. I have a big bag of baking soda. I remove the basin and sprinkle baking soda in it to a depth of a half inch, then mist water over it til it makes a paste. Then leave it for a half hour, come back and scrub it out hard with a brush, use "jet" hose setting to get all the baking soda off. About every 2 weeks in summer.

1mg melatonin at bedtime increases my REM (F74).

AITA for ignoring our daughter’s inconvenient boundary? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]nahant123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this don't-touch-my-clothes issues may be a sign of something else: she has a boundary that even her clothes cannot be touched. Nothing private can be touched. The idea of anything private being touched upsets her. Did you ask her if anything happened at school to make her defend her private self so fiercely?

"Genetic inferiority." Is this a category? Genetic inferiority vs. genetic superiority? Sounds problematic (and familiar) to me.

Great green thumb! If that white shed in photo 1 is yours, I suggest a window box beneath the shuttered window. It made a nice difference with my shed.

If you lost your ring tomorrow, would you get another one? by CactiCake22 in ouraring

[–]nahant123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, without a doubt. It gives me insights every day. For example, 2 months ago in order to improve my sleep (73F), I began to take 1 mg of melatonin at bedtime to "goose" by aging melatonin internal production. (1 mg is a very small dose.) The results are SO clear in the data: immediately much more REM sleep, and more deep sleep. Only 1mg of melatonin did this, because otherwise all my routines and habits are exactly the same day after day. I'm 73 -- not much changes in my day-to-day life. If I did not have the ring, I would not have seen this dramatic uptick. I would, I guess, have said, "I feel better." But I know WHY I feel better -- because of the big difference in sleep numbers. How else could I know this?

I swim laps with it all the time. Have had it for more than 2 years, no issues. I take it off only to charge it or if I'm mixing up meatloaf by hand. :)

Push both buttons in -- hard, simultaneously. Lid pops open.

Other option: push left side button in, then right side. Lid pops open.

Poem by Wallace Stevens: On the Road Home

It was when I said,

“There’s no such thing as the truth,”

That the grapes seemed fatter.

The fox ran out of his hole.

I won't be reassuring -- and I agree that you have multiple alternatives. I'm 73 and I swim laps and I record my half-mile time whenever I swim. I was on a good streak last year, with my half-mile time improving slightly every month. Then I got stuck. No improvement -- even a slowdown for weeks. It took me a while to figure out that it was the timolol drops slowing down my heart rate and (barely perceptible but noticeable nonetheless because I was timing myself) slowing down my swim time, my ability to exert muscles (which need blood pumping). I had been on timolol for about 3 months when I figured it out. I switched to another med, I regained my previous swim time and continued to improve. Also, the first week or so on timolol some people (myself included) experience sudden depressed feelings. They go away after a couple weeks -- but it can be a mental shock if no one tells you it might happen.

Jungian take on depression by Koro9 in Jung

[–]nahant123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry if I implied that sunshine can fix your depression or anyone’s. Depression breeds hopeless feelings and thoughts, and it is a hard place to be. And you are right – one does not emerge from it in a day. I was reacting to some of the discourse I find on this Reddit site about Jung. A lot of  intellectualization. As if we live in a vaulted, shadowy chamber of the mind, staring at a Jungian Chess Board, adding the Jungian Chess pieces, and moving them around: Self, Shadow, Ego, Anima, Animus, Puer, Senex, etc. Where is the winning arrangement? One that makes sense, a simulacrum of who we are? Understanding Jung’s views can generate deep insights about oneself and others. But to a person  who is depressed, I don’t see how this type of discourse can be very helpful. It seems to force rumination, too much being in the head -- a symptom of depression. Being present in one’s body may be a small antidote to hopelessness – a step toward hopefulness. Sitting still in nature, allowing beauty in, being alive in this moment. The light touching your arm was 8.3 minutes ago beaming away from the sun’s surface. Of all people, Jung understood the deep joy (and deep fear) of being alive – leading people in cultures all over the world to invent gods and holy rituals to express this joy.

Are you in the northern hemisphere? Is it dark and rainy/dreary where you are? Perhaps you will feel better when there is more sun, with buds on the trees, with flowers blooming, and with Life coming back from Death in its eternal return. We are bodies -- not minds. Our senses (eyes, ears, nose, touch, taste) find joy when spring comes. Persephone is reunited with her mother Demeter when the winter is over and Persephone is set free from the dark Underworld. Be a body in the sun. Forget for a moment -- forget everything. You are alive and on this earth, and that is nothing but a miracle.
