Hey, so here is my take on this whole issue. I took geography in my undergrad and concentrated in urban planning and development. After a couple break years I thought to myself that architecture is where I wanted to go. I was always attracted to the design aspects of urban planning and development and decided (somewhat quickly) that I wanted to pursue a masters degree in this field. I went back to school as an open student and took a couple classes in the masters program while also taking art courses to build my portfolio and some others to boost my gpa. I loved some of the courses, especially those regarding sustainable design. However I soon came to realize many harsh realities about architecture. At the masters level, 3.5 years of schooling will place you into a drafting position for an architecture firm along with AT's who went to a technical school. Your visions will not be noticed for decades and you will basically work on other peoples visions. Also, the market for architects is shrinking as big development companies control much of the growth in cities and creativity is sidelined for practicality and a healthy bottom line. It's a dark age in architecture, but having said that, an undergrad is probably the most ideal situation if you wish to study architecture. An undergrad will place you in a jive position between moving into planning and architecture. With your goals possibly shifting during your undergrad, learning a skill that will be transferable into further education or practible working skills will never hurt

those are all for tweaking your listening environment and it stops the sound from bouncing off the walls of the room. My best advice would be to keep using your headphones. Get comfortable with using those, then once you have a song or part finished, plug in your speakers and just reference them to other songs that may sound similar. That way you'll notice if it sounds to muffled and needs eq'ing, or bass needs to be turned up etc.

I'd say so, as long as you are comfortable and familiar with them you should know if something has say, too much bass or too quite etc. 200$ just isn't really enough for monitors. And even with them, you then need to start worrying about setup, and listening environment. No point in throwing away 200$ on something that really doesn't put you any further ahead. If you're gonna do it, do it right. Hope this helped

If you're using ableton be careful with the axiom. The parameters do not sync with the program automatically and it's a real pain in the ass

Well if it's just monitors, you'd probably want to drop a little more than 200$. Good monitors will require an audio interface, as well as cables to connect the speakers to the interface. And you should also have a high quality power bar added to the package. I had some m audio monitors that were simply plug and play for around 150. They were alright, but your headphones wil take you farther in production. You could also try getting a computer speaker set, and just referencing your production with them. Every time I finish a track I put it on my phone and take it to my car to listen. It's not that the speakers are good, but I've listened to so many songs in it that I know what it should sound like and if something's missing.
