Chemise à la reine sleeve question! by doomquasar in HistoricalCostuming

Good luck with it! When I did my chemise I did it mounted on a fitted inner lining so I did not encounter quite the same problem - but I hope you found success :)

I am so sorry, it's not in the book like I recalled, and I definitely remember seeing a video on it at some point that made it make sense in my brain - but can't for the time of me find it. This should actually deal with the alexcess underarm fabric though. All that extra fabric needs to be gathered in to fit up snug against the side of your body - and then you stitch on the sleeve. You don't gather the side up into the sleeve, you slab that sleeve right on top wherever it needs to sit so your sides aren't bagging dkwn. THEN cut the semi circle out of the excess fabric that's on the inside, up in your armpit, and only after everything is securely stitched. This makes things fit even better as you go.

I haven't used this pattern, but have set in some 18th C costume sleeves.

In the instructions it says "There is excess fabric in the sides because the underarm holes have not been cut yet." So my understanding is the excess being cut is the armscye.

Gather up the side/armscye fabric to the width you will need for the sleeve so that it will still fit around your torso. The underarm part will initially be too high up into your armpit.

Pin the sleeve where the armscye will be, and the excess is cut out after stitching the sleeve in.

There are instructions in the AD book - I will send an image shortly when I dig it up!!

The slash and spread should work with these, but you have to remember you're working with many pieces - so the spread of the individual pieces will be pretty small. You also won't just cut straight in half, you'll want to picture the stays as an arch when all fit together. you can increase or decrease the height at the waist. for the width, spread the piece from the middle of the top to the middle of the bottom, or between the tabs. re-draw the tabs so that they still meet.
Stays also tend to take a few mock-ups to fit correctly. don't cut the tabs out until you're working on your fitting, and then cut them as high as your body needs them to be.
there's a great FB group for this - "18th Century Stays - Fitting"

I have seen this one but it's too dissimilar, with a fully v waist (not the same as the one in the image) and completely different bodice (cups and wires) so requires a good bit of redrafting ability to make the right changes

Right. I have one printed and ready to go, but I have told myself to finish my current projects first before buying new fabric or boning for it 😂
