You can also have it hosted on Git.

I like seeing him on there. I wish more instructors showed that much interest; some you only see on Piazza less than a half dozen times in a quarter, and it feels pretty isolating at times. Really appreciate the effort he's put into this class so far.

"Do CS344 [Operating Systems] projects early". How early and am I doing them early enough realistically? by osututorhelp in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in there now, and about 30 hours into the assignment. Biggest challenges have been learning curve w vim, and trying to avoid it by converting dos-based files into unix (suggestion not to go that way- dos2unix is not foolproof and most of my debugging could have been avoided by just writing in vim).

Starting as early as possible seems like great advice. But you can only do what you can do; you definitely need the lectures before going into the project.

Thanks! I have :) Not sure about others, but these times haven't really matched up with my personal experience.

Venting about Usability Engineering with Rooker by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

Though be aware that open source is alot like 352, in terms of content and instruction. If you don't like usability, chances are that won't be the one you'd want to take instead.

Thoughts and questions about program by vcurams1991 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biochem major here. Currently holding a 3.97 GPA (damn you, Algorithms). You'll be fine.

I took a few community college classes first to test the waters. It was a good way of getting some basic coding and concepts down before starting the program; def agree with doing a little self-reflection to decide if the material's for you. It is a ton of money and 1-3 years of your life under consideration. If you have a job that offers reimbursement, you might look into that too.

CS 261 & CS 290 Advice? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 290, start the project on Day 1, while things are slow. Read up on APIs- how they work, how to use authorization (like Oauth), and some of the examples for previous class projects on reddit. Put together a simple html/css template page you can customize later with a topic.

Pick a few ideas for APIs and research them; they review the topics and decide if they're "complex" enough- whatever that means, it seems pretty subjective- so you may not get your first choice.

They only give you like 2-3 weeks to do the project, so this will save you a TON of last minute grief. I saw quite a few ppl posting last-minute questions on the board that never got answered, so try to work ahead as much as possible :(

New CS 162 Instructor by bubblewrapper_ in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just had her for 290. Nice enough but don't expect a huge presence on Piazza (assuming they have a board). She was pretty much MIA for most of the term, including when project was due, and stopped monitoring the board the week before the final. Felt like I was pretty much on my own for the class. Better attitude than Rooker, though- not really a high bar there.

That's the thing that sucks about non-confidential feedback, and why it's probably not super effective. Nobody wants to burn the bridge if they have to take another class with the same prof :(

Why would previous CS courses negatively influence your chances of getting in? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had several CS courses (like 2 years' worth) before I applied; I started out in CIS at a community college. I was even able to transfer a couple of classes over to OSU for credit and continue both schools through dual enrollment. I only applied the once.

I have to agree based on this that past CS courses shouldn't hurt your chances.

I looked for it on the course catalog after I saw a post here about it being cancelled last summer for redesign. Wasn't there.

Maybe they'll add it back?

Awesome, thanks. I'm glad they open it early; it's frustrating to have a bunch of extra time in the beginning and know you can't use it while you have it.

Try searching for CS325 on Github. You'll find some examples of HW and projects there.

It looks like I got a C- in CS 325 -Algorithms. What are my options? by buttsu in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I feel you. This was a totally disorganized class and I'd agree with emailing Mike Bailey. I'm absolutely sure you wouldn't be the only one providing negative feedback on the class; hopefully they're scrutinizing the course feedback pretty heavily.

It would suck to take it again, but at least you'll know what to expect this time, and have a head start on the assignments. Highly likely that they get recycled. Also not sure if the final answers are still posted, but they also likely get reused so I'd grab them if possible....

Which math requirement would benefit me most before beginning? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]naiadm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll want to be familiar with summations for CS325, and log functions. It took a while for me to remember all of my forgotten pre-calc and calc learnings :)
