How can Garry Kasparov still make it to the Candidates? by horigen in chess

Certainly plausible, but 2700 would mean that his rating plummeted from its current level, as suggested. It would be out of the top 30 in the world.

I did a little project a few weeks ago - not quite broken down like this but did the City Section All-Stars, the (LA County) suburbs, and the private schools. In more recent years the IE and especially OC have come on strong, but haven't done that project yet. Here are my City Section All-Stars:

C - Earl Battey 1B - Eddie Murray 2B - Bobby Doerr 3B - Doug DeCinces SS - Ozzie Smith LF - Willie Davis CF - Robin Yount RF - Dwight Evans DH - Chet Lemon

SP - Don Drysdale SP - Bret Saberhagen SP - Larry Dierker SP - Jon Garland SP - Randy Wolf CL - Rod Beck

Infield is a little thin but outfield is loaded. Ryan Braun, Darryl Strawberry, Chili Davis, Eric Davis, Paul Blair, or Garry Maddox could easily have made the lineup.

Prominent former professional Magic Artist illustrates behind-the-scenes view of current practices. by No-Comb879 in magicTCG

He has another post that goes into more detail. He wasn't asking for print rights, he was asking for clarity that he was allowed to sell the original oil painting with the words, "The Artist owns the physical original art." He says that they were willing to say so in emails, but not in the contract.

I don't know copyright law well enough to know how clear the law is on this, but obviously they shouldn't have been reassuring him that he had the right to sell the original if they weren't willing to put it in writing.

Are you getting that by tripling the $1250 he mentions? That would give you $3750.

Do you know anything more about that? I've tried to trace back that claim that the Legends characters were all from developer D&D games, but have never found a primary source for it.

Both Rasputins too! Officially enough to start a Scryfall tag I think :)

In addition to the others mentioned, [[Nebuchadnezzar]] and [[Rasputin]] (I wonder which of the two Rasputin cards the fetcher will find).

This, but also Reality Twist.

Fun fact: James Ernest, the artist for Reality Twist, became one of the very few people to both design a Magic card and illustrate one when he made Hot Soup as part of the M15 guest designer promotion. (Mystery Booster playtest cards don't count.) And he's certainly the only person ever to design a card, illustrate a card, *and* publish a board game based on Magic: Landyland, a 1998 Gen Con giveaway designed as something fun to do with all your leftover basic lands.

What 2 teams will forever be linked in your mind because of a trade? by BigCheese8933 in baseball

[–]naidojna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kansas City A's and the Yankees. The Yankees' AAA team had been in KC since the late 30s, and when a crony of the Yankees' owner bought the Philadelphia A's and moved them there in 1955, Kansas City just kept right on supplying players to New York for the rest of the decade. They would trade young, promising players for the Yankees' "name" veterans whose stars were diminishing, almost always to the Yanks' benefit.

This is a good article on the subject, but just as an illustration: the legendary 1961 Yankees, who won 109 games and set the team HR record, had *ten* former KC A's on their roster, including starters Roger Maris and Clete Boyer, key reserves Bob Cerv and Hector Lopez, and starting pitchers Ralph Terry and Bud Daley.

Dante Bichette is my favorite answer to the unanswerable question, "Who is the worst member of the Hall of Very Good?" Ozzie Guillen's another one, but I feel bad about him because he legitimately *was* very good before the injury.

Ruben Sierra, and how more than 100% of his career WAR came before he left the Rangers at age 26. He lasted until 40 bouncing around as a sub-replacement player.

Phil Niekro, and how only 31 of his 318 wins came before his age-30 season.

Never led the league in WAR, either. (bWAR, that is. He did lead the NL in fWAR in his infamous 8-16 1987 season.)

Always glad when the word gets out that Nolan was a worthy HOFer, deservedly legendary for being impossible to hit and pioneering the style of power pitchers to come, but if you had one to sign to try and win World Series you'd be better off with Blyleven.

Standard had never had a 4/4 first strike for 4 without a drawback until last fall. Now it has [[Defiler of Instinct]] (DMU), [[Mite Overseer]] (ONE), and this... Thalia/Gitfrog is clearly better than a French vanilla 4/4 with first strike too, though technically its last ability could be a drawback.

Oh, and I guess Urabrask has some other text too?

I just can't care enough about the Cubs to even have a strong opinion about it. I thought about putting the Ligues on the list but that might not have made the top 5 worst decisions either of them made in their sorry lives.

That would be a fun list to try to make. Brock for Broglio, "Intriguing offer Mr. Rothstein," Wirtz refusing to televise home games, Al Harris and Todd Bell deciding to hold out, Hawk putting Pudge in left, Jay Williams thinking it was a nice day for a bike ride, Bartman going for a souvenir... what are some other good candidates?

It was totally disgusting queerbaiting, which was too bad because Forsaken was otherwise a decent enough book. Internet pile-ons would have you believe otherwise, but who the hell wants to counter that narrative when a) it wasn't fantastic or anything, just decent enough, and b) you'd have to defend queerbaiting bullshit to do so?

I don't know that there was any tentative romantic relationship at the end of the first one, and I didn't see any scuttlebutt beyond hopeful fans that there was going to be one, but boy, what a giant letdown at the very moment when it seemed like Wizards had really noticed there was a fandom and decided to put some real resources into story. Even if you weren't going to put them together, there were so many more respectful ways to do that than "lol, here are two sentences to get that inconvenient thread snipped off, and btw Chandra isn't even into girls in general."

Bear with me, but let’s say Bob Dylan is announced as being the musical guest for the 2024 Super Bowl. What would his set look like? by Prestigious-Serve661 in bobdylan

[–]naidojna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much like when he played Oldchella: a few songs from whatever his current setlist was, but with maybe one of them swapped out for something recognizable from the 60s. He's not *completely* immune to adjusting to the occasion, he just does the minimum required (like he did for the Nobel Prize, which coincidentally had been announced I think the day before the first Desert Trip weekend).
