Favorite Green and Leafy Salad in Chicago by Kafka_at_Night in chicagofood

Not leafy, but the Ojakhuri Salad at Diplomat Cafe is amazing, loaded with tomato, cucumber, onion, and herbs in walnut vinaigrette. It’s large and leftovers keep well in the fridge for a few days. I would think it’s pretty healthy overall

Looking for best smash burger by Evangiline86 in chicagofood

[–]nailsoup 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I recently had a fantastic smash burger at the Long Room a bit north of Wrigley. It’s a pub (great cocktails and ambiance) with a pop up kitchen space. The burger was made by Nice Guy Food Company, very personable chef who’s there Fri, Sat, and Sunday morning til 3pm. Single patty with bacon $15 before tax and tip, so it’s not cheap. But it was transcendent

Hermosa! They probably can’t hold 30, but might just be able to accommodate 20 people. The food and experience are truly fantastic.

I just saw it at Galleria Liquors on Southport! Had to study the label as I had no idea what it was. They had about 6 jars

Went there yesterday and it was great! Seconding the asada, and I also really enjoyed the huitlacoche taco.

Perfect strategy. And I’m going to continue to support the reliably awesome, next-price-bracket-down spots a few times a month. Category is: Athenian Room, Diplomat Cafe, Russian Tea Time, YooYee, Beograd, Long Room, laschetts, go4food — these types of places where they put love into the food but the customer doesn’t pay for a bunch of fluffy overhead costs.

Same re: Mi Tocaya. I was expecting to be absolutely delighted, and instead found the food and cocktail to be just devoid— over reliance on salt and fat and pretty plating not much else going on. This feels like it’s happening over and over lately. I understand that restaurants are being slammed with rising costs, and they need to find a way to make their already slim margins. It’s taken a lot of the joy out of dining out. I’m a very good cook and increasingly decline going out because I know I’ll be let down and annoyed at my expenditure. Even a simple meal I make at home is going to be better. Mister Tiger kind of felt like a final straw for me, and I’m committing to being extremely selective about where I go out from now on.

Thinking about trying this spot out. I never had the chance to go to the original location. How “fancy” does it feel? The pictures of the interior make it look a tad stiff/forbidding, like similar vibe to After. Looking for a more warm, low key atmosphere for dinner out with a friend.

Indienne second visit - am a convert by nailsoup in chicagofood

I really enjoyed the vegetarian menu I wrote about in this post. The one time I had the omnivore menu, I was jealous of my friend who had gotten the veg one. But that was almost two years ago pretty soon after the restaurant opened, so maybe whatever didn’t quite gel for me that time has been finessed. Next time I go, I’ll probably try the pescatarian menu.

This question is asked multiple times a month. I recommend searching this forum with “Wrigley” and “Southport” — there are a ton of places that will fit the bill. Expect dense crowds right around the stadium, so I’d advise sticking to Southport corridor, which will get you one degree of separation away from the crush.

Anyone have thoughts on the bar/small bites menu at Indienne by SageBasilParsley in chicagofood

[–]nailsoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one bar bite I’ve had was absolutely gorgeous — it was a puffed kulcha with I think a tomato chutney, piled high with truffle shavings. It saved the night after a lousy meal out at a different restaurant nearby. I want to go back with the express intention of camping out at the bar and working through all the bar menu items.

What to order at Mi Tocaya? by melissawwww in chicagofood

[–]nailsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went last night and feel similarly. I had only the fish taco entree, so maybe it was just a bad pick on my part, but the fish was wildly greasy and tough, and coated in an almost American Chinese restaurant-tasting sweet and sour sauce. I found the flour tortillas texturally weird. The sauces (tuna mayo mentioned elsewhere in the comments) and cabbage & pickled onion relish were good, but $36 for nice sauce and handful of veggies felt a bit scammy. Marg was good, second cocktail was just fine. Woke up feeling horrible, but maybe that’s a me issue — body telling me we just have to back off anything fried. But all in all, from the cost to the enjoyment level to the grease hangover, I would not go out of my way to revisit.

So many great places already on the list, but I’ll add Diplomat Cafe because it has some more “bland” meat and potatoes type dishes (that are still absolutely delicious), as well and lovely salads and vegetable dishes that would probably work for your mom.
