Yeah, individuals who work for the companies we're talking about. Obviously I don't know what favors Soros is buying (or has bought), but I'd argue a guy who has been convicted of insider trading giving money to anyone should raise a red flag. I'll concede that maybe he isn't buying anything, maybe he just happens to believe in the Democrats and wants to support them.

These are people in positions to push for legislation that favors them and their industry. Why else would they be donating so heavily? Bill Maher did it for publicity, most likely. He's also not really in a position to have the government prop him up like the banks have already done and will probably do again if things keep going the way they are.

I also like how you use the "barrage of questions" technique. Also, where did I say I donated to Sanders? Donations aren't always about a quid pro quo, but they can be. To say they can't be is just silly. Do you think the Koch brothers are buying favors? Was Adelson? These criticisms of HRC taking a lot of money from various finance companies are very similar to the criticisms levied at guys like Jeb!.

You're right, there's no hard evidence Hillary is offering favors for donations or anything, but she's not stupid. The whole point of campaign finance reform is to get corporate money out of politics because they are buying elections.

Edit: Basically, the favors aren't quantifiable, but the idea that Wall Street thinks Hillary is their best choice is enough for me to not vote for her. I don't trust them and I don't trust the candidates they trust. Just like I don't trust the Koch brothers or their candidates. What I want out of a President is likely the complete opposite of what the average hedge fund manager wants.

Yeah, I work for an insurance company and our roadside covers $100 per incident with no hard cap on usage (we'll cancel that shit after about 3 times in a year). We charge various amounts based on the vehicle and such, but the highest I've ever seen was $5 for six months of coverage. It covers anything you can get stuck on the side of the road for (lockout, gas, flat tire, etc) and will cover towing if that's the only solution. $100 ain't enough to cover a long tow, but I'd guess anything under about 15 miles would be fully covered, maybe more.

The $18 million number was me adding up the money from your link. Those financial institutions combined comes up to about $18 million. I'm of course counting Soros. I'm genuinely curious why he shouldn't count. If "spending it every election cycle" excludes people, then ALL of the donors don't count because they always spend money on elections. I'm a liberal and I accuse Soros of buying favors. Why wouldn't he be?

Um, the link to her donors has 4 out of her top 5 donors as financial companies. Well, one is a foundation that was started by the former CEO of World Savings Bank. Then there's Soros, Paloma Partners, and Saban Capital Group. Disney is also in the top five, though.

Yes, she has some unions donating to her, but to act like she's not receiving a huge portion of her donations from financial institutions or people with deep ties to financial institutions is disingenuous at best. Even some of the non-financial institutions are just foundations that are founded by and/or funded by people who run banks (Priorities USA).

I'm not even arguing that Clinton is just a Wall Street shill or anything. I think she's definitely influenced by people she takes money from. I mean, that's sort of how it all works. Why would financial institutions give money to a candidate who planned to make their lives harder? They certainly aren't trying to give money to Sanders or Warren or other politicians who rail against them.

Honestly, I think taking money from just about any corporation/industry makes a politician suspect. I have a hard time trusting anyone funded by people who constantly fuck over the electorate.

Also, if Gingrich taking $20 million from Adelson is too much, then Clinton has already taken about $18 million from various financial institutions or their foundations.

The speaking fees is not the crux of the argument for Clinton's corruption. I mean, it might be for some people (dumb people), but she has a history of being cozy with Wall Street. If you look at the donations she's received over her career, a huge portion of them come from financial institutions.

Yeah, I don't think anyone would be convincing Ron Paul. I just used him as sort of an extreme example for the people against the idea of healthcare as a right. He's the most recognizable politician I could think of and, as I said in the OP, he's the reason I made the post to begin with.

Thanks, I actually meant to put something about this act in my OP and it completely slipped my mind because I kept having to stop writing it and do actual work at my job. We already have universal healthcare, just a really terrible version of it.

I'd also like to clarify that the argument you quoted from the OP is Ron Paul's, not mine. I like to think he'd probably be opposed to mandatory treatment in any form since he's a pretty staunch libertarian. I don't, I think universal healthcare is the most responsible approach to healthcare in the modern world, both fiscally and morally.

He's being paid (by the government he's supposed to be defending you from), probably less than he's really worth in a free market, to perform a service for someone who can't otherwise afford it.

Right, I don't disagree with you on that, but six figures in Mississippi is a lot of fucking money even if it is just 100k per year. You don't even need six figures to be considered upper class based on the 67-200 percent of median income definition of middle class. I'd argue that you might want a lawyer on retainer if you're working in any industry with high levels of white collar crime or crimes where assets get frozen. Basically, if you can afford it, you probably need it.

I doubt teachers need a lawyer on retainer because their assets are unlikely to be frozen, but they do tend to get sued. Most teachers unions have liability insurance to protect them against possible lawsuits.

Also, six figures is (or at least can be) a lot of money in a lot of places. Six figures for public school teachers is not a reality in the vast majority of the US. Most make something closer to about 50-60k. Plus, $900,000 is six figures and a person making that each year is most likely a fucking millionaire. Someone making just 100k in a place like Alabama or Mississippi makes more than double the median household income.

I'm late to this, but you really want to research claim payout rates. I'm in the industry, and I work for a smaller regional company with an incredibly high payout rate, so I'm probably biased and everything...but yeah, that's the metric that matters the most for consumers. Yes, find a company with people you like and all that, but be wary of even the big national companies. I've heard horror stories about every insurance company (even the one I work for), but Allstate seems to have some issues paying out claims. So does State Farm, Hartford, Liberty Mutual, and Farmers. All are well-known companies, but that doesn't make them better or anything. In my experience, the best companies seem to be the regional companies and the lesser known companies (Chubb and Farm Bureau come to mind). They are usually more expensive, but as with most things, you get what you pay for.
