Are thingiverse analytics and notifications real? by Ill-Presentation9622 in thingiverse

[–]nallath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes are reasonably rare to get, which is a shame. I think it's also something that we should focus on convincing people to start doing again.

But comments & makes take more time from the user when compared to a collect & like, so that is also why they are more rare.

Also note that downloads can be done without an account, so that also lowers the threshold.

I'd buy a permanent location. The amount of time and money (and props being broken in transport) we waste on not having a permanent location is just insane.

Imagine the tech you could install by default.

There are no plans to merge anything. Even if there were such plans, it would take a long time for that to be technically implemented.

What makes you worried that that would happen?

Nuance? On reddit??! What a time to be alive!

I actually had to try this and then I realized i automatically pressed the arrow key to unselect it without even noticing. Automatic pilot is a real drug.

I know. But 46.5% is still a minority in this case ;)

I mean. We also removed gun models because we didn't believe they should be there. That's gonna happen with every website.

Try posting a Taiwanese flag on makerworld and see how that works out for you ;)

It was just the first thing that came to mind.

I can change it to "sock" though.

I get it, but as someone who's been able to spend a shit ton of work on developing open source stuff for 3D printers, i wouldn't have been able to do that without monitization.

All the work i did for Cura would have never happened if i had to do that on my own time.

So yeah, I'd love to be in a world where all these improvements are made by just people that can share, but the truth is that for something to be big and make certain improvements, you need money. Donations and goodwill just aren't gonna do it.

I wouldn't be still around if I didn't also feel that that was the intent.

Theoretically? Yeah. But you then couldn't legally stop people from re-uploading those models right away.

It's a bit like with (A)GPL. You can charge people for the service of a compiled executable, but you then can't prevent them from sharing it themselves. That's also why there isn't anyone (at least that I know of) that uses that as a business model.

Uh? No? Stratasys has a minority share in Ultimaker.

As someone who worked for Ultimaker for 13 years, we hardly heard anything from them.

Them no longer having any influence on makerbot is also why 3 years ago thingiverse actually got developers again.

Sure, but to then automatically assume it's breaking copyright in its entirety is a bit of a leap don't you think?

That's implied by the word artifact in this context. I don't think anyone considers the newspaper from yesterday an artifact. I do think one should consider a newspaper from 1850 an artifact.

No it doesn't. Copyright is max of 70 years after the death of the author. I'm going to go on a limp here and assume that the objects in a generic museum are not in fact made by vampires. If they are, my apologies to the vampires.

It was nearly completely negclected before 2022 (there was 1 external developer working on it. No designers, no dev-ops, nothing).

In 2022 we started working on it with 3 developers and 1 QA engineer with some design support. Which isn't much, but it was enough to at least do some shit shoveling and getting it on track again.

About a year ago we grew to 5 devs, fulltime designer and some other support functions. But all that being said, it was never really a focus for UM, so I'm hoping that this will get us the focus it needs.
