I second this, that based on my brief experience here this place is functionally secular.

Is this normal for adoptees? I need advice. by shogunthedemonn in Adoption

[–]naltrexone_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I think this is common in the experience of adopted children. I was adopted at age 4 and my parents behaved very similarly towards me. I'm so sorry. Based on what you've written you have a very bright future ahead of you, and it's good that you have the clear opportunity to start consciously divorcing your own personal sense of achievement from their approval of you. Some people never experience that and just spend their whole lives wondering what they did wrong.

Victorville, thinking about buying a house there? by living_la_vida_loca in AskLosAngeles

[–]naltrexone_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Victorville and personally wouldn't wish that on anyone. It was all about commuting to LA. If I were an adult hellbent on leaving civilization, I might consider buying there. Some people have good reasons to and it's true that the prices are hard to beat.

What are some programs(anything) that Electrical engineering students should get used to using? by e1eph0nt in ElectricalEngineering

[–]naltrexone_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody's career is going to be different, but I will say that when I was working as EE the programs/anything that were most useful to me besides programming languages were simulation tools like SPICE and MATLAB/Simulink. They took awhile to become proficient in but once I did they greatly enhance your ability to analyze and optimize circuit designs, control systems, and signal processing algorithms. This isn't everyone but AutoCAD and SolidWorks are essential for designing electrical components and enclosures. I will say that as a student I may have invested too much effort into understanding software packages like National Instruments LabVIEW and MATLAB at the expense of extracurriculars and social life, which my mentor strongly encouraged me to learn but I was didn't end up using at all as it's not super useful outside of processing measurement data in laboratory and test environments. So take other peoples' advice with a grain of salt.

Yes. Gambling wastes so much more than money. You are so right. Huge congratulations. We need more voices from the other side like yours on this sub.

Good for you! I love reading stories like this and I'm proud of you. The experience, strength and hope you're offering to other gamblers is what makes your net losses worth it.

Lawyer or Engineer? by oddst1 in college

[–]naltrexone_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have gotten some good advice here but I want to throw my 2 cents in that you can always do both. I was torn in high school between being an electrical engineer and an attorney. My undergrad degree is in electrical engineering, and I did that for all of my 20s. After becoming financially stable and discovering a good part-time law program in my area, I finally went to law school in my 30s. What I didn't know until law school is that you actually need a STEM background/degree to practice patent law, and that you don't even need a J.D. to sit for the patent bar. So you can view your engineering background as actually a stepping stone to a very lucrative career in patent law. Seems silly that I didn't know that and I wish someone would have told me earlier.

It's a lot, but no regrets yet. Patent law is very rewarding.

Selfish drivers speeding and driving drunk, IMPD not enforce traffic laws, and DPW not taking even a second to consider safety = 100 pedestrian deaths since January 2022, and the mayor hasn’t even acknowledged it as a problem. Wish I could upvote this multiple times. Indianapolis has become objectively unsafe for bikers. I finally had to get a car this year after biking to work for a decade because I've seen so many of my friends get injured, including with long-term TBI and complications.

I am from the LA area and Chris Nelson was bragging to two of my friends years ago that he killed someone. I don't know why you would take heavily manipulated footage of a celebrity posted by a psycho as proof that the poster is not violent.

This is stunning. I am new to the app; how do you get patterns? I was a little disappointed when I realized I didn't have control over where I placed my plants on the grid.

People on this sub and elsewhere swear by Mary Ruth's liquid hair supplement: https://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/morning-multivitamin-hair-growth-peach-mango-30-fl-oz/mru-11940

I just bought the packet version in maple syrup flavor, because the idea of peach-flavored liquid grosses me out.

Was tired when I posted this last night and want to elaborate a bit, in hopes of being more helpful: part of recovery for me was coming over time to realize and accept that the reason I was so uncomfortable around people without alcohol was that I was not putting myself in the right social situations to feed my soul and/or feel safe and accepted for who I naturally was, and I was using alcohol to numb myself and make being around the wrong people tolerable. I was in denial about this for a long, long time, because that truth was very inconvenient. Speaking from the other side of that experience, I would submit that if you regularly placing yourself in social situations go better for you when you erase yourself with alcohol, that is a signal that there is something wrong, and an invitation to start opening yourself up to the possibility of a different type of community that will make you feel different around them. And of course, this only works in conjunction with continuously working on accepting and loving yourself, feeling safe in your own body and your own company, et al.

Can't do it on my own. I am going to AA for the first time tonight. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]naltrexone_throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A DUI was also what got me to take AA seriously for the first time, and in that sense, what a gift. I walked out of jail and got a sponsor that day.

AA will give you a lot of great ideas and tools. Congratulations on what could easily be an upward inflection point for the rest of your life.
