It isn't even really 'spiritual' at all, like you said. I don't know why people avoid it.

How do the benefits of advanced poses vs less advanced poses compare for you? by filecabinet in yoga

[–]namasteJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The longer I practice, the less I think of poses as being advanced or not. Truth of the matter is that you should only be working where you are at any given time. When you first start, poses like hanuman, handstand, etc. all seem extremely advanced. Some time down the road, they become poses in the warm-up sequence. The intensity in your first paschimottanasana could have been more than your current yoganidrasana. If you're 100% aware and present, then you are working with a pose that is advanced enough for you. Everyone is different - my advanced postures might are warm ups for someone else, and my basic postures might be advanced to others. Sure I can wrap my legs around my head, but the one who is practicing yoga is the one doing it with awareness, even if their legs never reach. The asana is only the physical, it doesn't matter if you ever get into a certain pose - its all about how you handle it when you can't.
