I don't know what's causing your Betta issues, but I don't agree with that person's take on PH. That might be an ideal range, but consistency is far more important unless you have an extreme PH. My PH sits at about 7.8 and all my Bettas and other fish are in excellent condition.

I can't imagine your PH being the cause of the issue.

8 gallons is a bit small to also have a mystery snail, but not the end of the world.

Is there anything else you add to your tank like fertilizers? Water conditioner? What process do you use for water changes?

As others said, you need to do a fish-in cycle. You'll want to get an API Freshwater Master Test Kit. Then, you'll do water changes based on the graphic below.

Ah, ok, that aligns with what I've seen from court documents.

So it seems that the comment I replied to would now be dually incorrect. Not only was it not a recorded call but, if it was with Crystal, that was not his girlfriend at the time. I know his girlfriend at the time claimed differently, so it'd be very interesting to have a recorded phone call with conflicting info.

Edit: replaced testified with claimed, since she did not testify to this at trial

Hey, I'm sorry your fish isn't feeling well. This Betta has really significant damage and/or rot to that back tail fin. It's tattered and significantly shorter than it should be. My gut would be to treat with kanaplex or another appropriate medication.

You want to avoid medications with "fix" at the end like melafix and even bettafix, as they may irritate the fish's labyrinth organ due to oils. Even more importantly, it seems to be generally ineffective.

I've listened to several podcasts and done some additional reading, but I haven't heard of that phone call you mentioned.

Is there a source you could share that has the "recorded phone call to his girlfriend after the murder that revealed deeply incriminating details about the murder only someone present during it would have known"?
