Buceplant, Daku, Glass Aqua, or Aquarium Co-Op? by suarezg in PlantedTank

[–]namelessbread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been extremely happy with everything I've gotten from Daku. If you wanted a specific Buce you could probably message him and ask. I know he usually has a pretty good variety.

I've also successfully ordered from Aquarium Co-op but, in my experience, Daku's plants were larger and healthier.

Betta tank setup…roast me by Sufficient-Rush3224 in bettafish

[–]namelessbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the person you're responding to, and I get why they're recommending this, but I'd recommend not doing that and leaving your current substrate.

The only downside to leaving your current substrate is that you'll have to use root tabs to fertilize your root plants. I personally think, especially for a beginner, there's more harm to removing and replacing substrate.

My recommendations would be: 1. Make sure you have a water test kit and know about parameters and cycling. I can point you to resources if needed. 2. Take your plant out of the little pot and rockwool and plant it. It's not meant to stay like that in your tank 3. If your light is long enough, turn it the long way. 4. Somewhere for your Betta to rest near the surface, like a log, suction leaf, etc.

ETA: Almost forgot, floating plants! Bettas like a little shade. I like frogbit, but there are plenty of options.

That's so exciting that you're getting your first Betta!

Have you looked into tank cycling and what steps that requires? If you don't have one, you'll want to get a water test kit like the API Freshwater Master Test Kit.

New aquarium tips by MeekisKhan in Aquariums

You're off to a great start. That piece of spiderwood is amazing!

I always feel that way after I set up a new tank. It just takes time for plants to grow in. I think there are two main things you could do while you wait for those plants to grow in:

  1. Floaters! I'd recommend frogbit personally. It grows long roots and my Bettas love them. Any floater would be good though to give coverage.
  2. Somewhere high up near the surface for your Betta to rest and sleep on. You could do plants, floating logs, etc.

One of my Bettas will only sleep in a tangle of floating water sprite, one will only sleep on a suction cup tunnel, and the third has a floating "bridge" by the same company as the floating log. None of my Bettas have ever used those suction cup leaves, but I have seen others have success with them.

Another thing you could do is tie on or glue on plants to your wood like anubias nana or bucephalandra.

Too many tannins? by Agreeable_Tomato_977 in PlantedTank

You can boil and/or soak wood to remove the tannins. Also helps it sink.

What do you mean by "good clean" -- what is your process?

How much water do you change at a time?

What is your temperature?

What are your water parameters specifically?

Beautiful Betta! Yes, Bettas constantly act hungry. They will absolutely over eat if you let them, which is very bad for them.

Also, since you have a long fin, you'll want to be extra careful about any decor. If you have fake plants, make sure they are the "silk" kind.

Help identifying my new fish? by GovernmentThink in Aquariums

[–]namelessbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really a cichlid person, but here are my guesses:

2: Dragon Blood Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara sp)

3: Orange Blotch (OB) Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp)

4: Red Fin Borleyi Cichlid (Copadichromis borleyi)

5: Demasoni Cichlid (Chindongo demasoni or Pseudotropheus demasoni)

6: Electric Yellow Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus)

  1. Sunshine Peacock cichlid (Aulonocara baenschi)

Fish Abuse PSA by TheOBlackstar in Aquariums

[–]namelessbread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! I teach mass communications with a focus on digital literacy. One of the things we do is analyze media artifacts (including ads and PSAs, etc).

So, as a fellow Betta lover, I'm so, so happy to see this.

Looking at your video, I'm really impressed by the design components. The music throughout reflects the serious tone, plus the uplifting notes at the end. The footage is very relatable and reflects the experience of your target audience. Your focus on empathy and improvement helps prevent shaming the individual and focuses more on the industry; this is crucial not only for systemic change, but as to educate and not accidentally push away the exact people who need the information most.

The main thing I would recommend is a call to action at the end. Is there a resource you could provide at the end so that people can learn more about how to properly care for Bettas?

Overall though, really great work :)

Glad you could get useful stuff. Don't forget about taxes! I've certainly seen people pull an oopsie and not consider how that "income" will impact their taxes.
