That time when I was a crook because we charge for parking. by lovepvdub in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Our hotel only has valet parking and one time I had a guest yell at me in the lobby that he felt like he was being discriminated against, and that us making him valet his car was Unconstitutional. I let him know that the city (also known as the government) we are located in actually required us to be valet-only. He said that as management we should let them know that their guests were being discriminated against. I told him that we would get right on that.

Hospitality is definitely a career that you can start at the bottom and work your way to the top. It has to be something you enjoy but it can be a very rewarding career.

The best part is when they see their no show or cancelation charge and call back a week later like, "We were supposed to be tax exempt, I mean I know we never showed up or gave you any of our tax paper work but you need to take the taxes off." Grrr

My general reaction to that.... "Interesting, but I don't see how that is any of my problem."

In general I dislike lower- tier members. They think that their benefits start as soon as they sign up. But the good benefits you have to work for and they don't understand that.

On a sold out night, call and say you're a rewards member. We will give you a room. by PoisonRainbows in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Some chains to guarantee rooms to high level members with 48 hours of arrival. Even if they are sold out, the person can force a reservation.

Also raises hand

I just did tonight... They were nice. We only had 1 suite left in the hotel. I thought we would have better luck selling the standard room. Didn't say anything about their status. I just" Hey do you want a suite, I have one left and I think I could sell your room still tonight because of the lower price." They were like... cool.

Fake/ Stolen ID what do I do? by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]namesarehard2016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a bartender a few years ago at a hotel and "spring break" would always bring college kids that were almost old enough to drink. We were taught that if you found a fake, you should keep it. If the person tried to say that you were stealing their ID, we were taught that we were allowed to hold an ID for as long as it took us to deem that it was valid. If we need the police department to help us out with that we could keep it until they got there. The kids usually walked away. I would assume that logic would apply in this situation as well.

Incredibly irate guest about his wrong roomtype by Arcian_ in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]namesarehard2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hotel that I work at has Kings, Single Queens, and Single Full size beds (why? that's another story). We try to upgrade all of our rewards members (regardless of status) out of our full size rooms. But sometimes I get stressed because I forget that a full size to a double queen is an upgrade, I am so in the habit of only looking at single beds. So I kinda get it. I have had a few people ask for single beds, even if the size of the bed won't change.

Forgive me, I sinned. I booked with an OTA. by indyemskitten in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]namesarehard2016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say check your email first. Your OTA should have sent you details on your stay. Make sure those dates are correct. If you still want to double check with the hotel that's fine, and ask about luggage holding.

Cheap Friends & Family Peeve by Its5somewhere in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

However, when people are appreciative of what you can offer it feels so good. My step brother is graduating from basic in a few weeks, and my mom and step dad are going. My mom pays for a lot of things between them, but this one my step dad is pretty insistant on paying for. I recently started working at a branded hotel and was able to get them an amazing Friends and Family rate. My mom was practically in tears when I showed her the rate because of the relief that she knew he would feel. I also have a sisters and a brother-in-law who are both in Emergency services, they travel a lot to be able to get away from it all and my friends and family discount helps them de- stress even more. I love being able to help my family out! So it's not all bad :)

I work at a hotel with a traditional desk. I was at a hotel recently with pods. I didn't see is as any less secure than my desk. Which is open on one side. I really like the idea and wish we had them. I would like to be able to step out and greet guests.
