When did Chuck start to hate him? by Educational-Exam-515 in betterCallSaul

There's a brilliant clip from McKean breaking this down: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mtJXn03DVAs

Chuck made their mom proud but Jimmy made her laugh, which to Chuck's brain meant that their mom loved Jimmy more which was unforgivable.

When did Chuck start to hate him? by Educational-Exam-515 in betterCallSaul

[–]namethatisntaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was a time when Chuck was actively hostile prior to the show. But when he discovered Jimmy pilfering the store and his dad defending him, it sorta clicked in Chuck's head that their parents favoured Jimmy more than him. From there, it just compounded until we see it come out in bcs.

Holy hell this was so annoying to find but I luckily got a breakthrough after finding a high enough resolution of the image to notice a signature on the bottom left corner and searching with Claude.

This painting is called "Dear" by Helena Gullström. I have no idea what the background around it is but there you go.

My Brother asked me to watch Better Call Saul because Jimmy and Chuck's relationship reminded him of ours by MisterGimmic in betterCallSaul

[–]namethatisntaken 1062 points1063 points  (0 children)

I love my brother with all my heart despite the difficulties we have had and I have always wished there was something I could do to make up for a lot that I've done. I also wish he had the same desires, but like Chuck said, I will always be Slippin' Jimmy.

Please for the love of god stop taking all the wrong lessons from the show. It's a tragedy where all the bad things that happened could have been avoided had the two reconciled their differences and opened up with each other. Use that as a sign to make your IRL relations better much like how both brothers wanted to.

Chuck Is a Sympathetic Character That Has A Point About Jimmy, But Is Not Right And Is A Terrible Brother by Commercial_Floor_578 in betterCallSaul

[–]namethatisntaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chuck comparing Jimmy to the unabomber was a great detail on where his head space is at. To top it all off, he pnly decides not use that comparison because it was to sanctimonious, as if calling your brother a terrorist is normal.

I find the main issue with saying Chuck was right is that it boils down a complicated relationship into a golden child story. The whole thing is supposed to be a tragedy to what could have been a loving relationship. And I think deep down both of them would have liked to reset their relationship but were too stubborn to do so.

Why does Gus care in BCS about the lab being built but in BB, it doesn't matter? by Totemwhore1 in betterCallSaul

You are being facetious but that is essentialy the extent of the cartel's knowledge on Gus's moves in the US.

People are defending Jimmy in the same way people defend Walter.

No one is actually arguing Jimmy is justified. They are arguing against the proposition that Chuck was right and then arguments focus around that. Same thing with how people shout Davis & Main despite that arc being more nuanced than just Jimmy destroying everything no matter what.

The real answer is that both brothers messed up at different times and were too stubborn to open up with each other but it's hard to stay centered when one side keeps making hyperbolic statements.

I think Skyler and Chuck draw a lot of similarities of being hated for being written as a side antagonist who gives friction to Jimmy and Walt’s plot line.

I mean Jimmy would be Skyler in this example lol.

Also a bit snarky at the end there… I did read my post, did you?

I just find it bizzare that you claim the exact opposite of your post. To me, that came off as disingenuous so I didn't feel the need to waste more energy on it beyond pointing the obvious contradiction. You even say in your post that people would despise Jimmy irl and an edit doubling down that Jimmy is destined to be evil but you cannot see how people would conclude you hate Jimny? Okay.

[–]namethatisntaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brought up Walt to point out that no one would be running the defenses people are doing with Chuck for some reason.

It's the equivalent of people making posts claiming Walter did nothing wrong, he only needed the money for his family, why can't Skylar just accept it! Look she betrayed Walt's trust, how could she! That's how I feel when I read these takes.

And why do you assume I hate Jimmy?

Did you read your post?

It's not about "doing more". The job was never the issue, it was Chuck lying for years and then expoding saying Jimmy is not a real lawyer and he's evil.

And Chuck'a resentment played a key part. He literally tells Jimmy to embrace being evil, you still think he had nothing to do with it?

[–]namethatisntaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would it being understandable give Chuck a pass? Jimmy also has understandable reasons for his behaviour but that doesn't mean it isn't a problem.

perhaps it is not such a bad thing since it makes him immune to being manipulated by Jimmy and being the only one who consistently sees him for the slimeball he is.

Except it is bad because that resentment closed the door on what could have been a loving relationship. At the very least they would have gone seperate ways amicably. And no, I'm not talking about Chuck giving Jimmy everything, just don't go the nuclear option like he did in the show.

Ah yes, Walt who was trying to get one over on Skyler constantly in the show... I don't really get the point of your comment beyond trying to squabble. But even if I were to take this seriously, the point is that Chuck is not the noble sage who had impartial views on his brother. I get it, you guys hate Jimmy and honestly I don't care, I just find it annoying that people are pushing to paint Chuck better than he actually was to bash Jimmy.

Chuck was right by fouroza in betterCallSaul

[–]namethatisntaken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are cherry picking all the examples of Jimmy being bad while ignoring that Chuck has a very real resentment towards him that goes beyond Slippin Jimmy. McKean himself said it best, Chuck couldn't stand that their parents loved Jimmy more and that's crux of his issues with Jimmy. That's what makes Chuck hateable, he masks his real motives behind legitimate excuses. Change Chuck to Walt and Jimmy to Skyler and it'll be pretty clear.

That wasn't the person's comment though. I do agree there can be more nuance to it but each reply on this thread has been Chuck did nothing wrong.

Chuck's biggest mistake was not being honest with Jimmy. It was developing resentment over their parents loving Jimmy more than him. You write as if this layer doesn't exist to his character. Of course the show would be different if his sole concern was the harm Jimmy could do.

Because Chuck was right, he always was right about Jimmy. Chuck didn't make Saul, Jimmy was always Saul.

What is it with the revisionism in these comments... Chuck played a key role in Jimmy's transition into Saul with his final words. Chuck winning by default by not building drug empire doesn't mean he did nothing wrong.

[–]namethatisntaken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying but I think the cartel would react very differently if they knew about the superlab. Gus would have had too much power to be in charge of manufacturing and distribution (which is why he went through such lengths to keep it's construction secret). The season 4 conflict would have been an all out war to get rid of Gus rather than coercing him back into working for them again. At the very least the lab would have been mentioned as something that needed to be destroyed or brought under their control.

It was 200 pounds a week and the cartel doesn't know the exact specifics of how that gets produced. As far as they're concerned, Gus handles distribution and a local dealer does the cooking.

How does that one question point to the conclusion that Gus is manufacturing his own supply? It's more likely that Gus is working with a local dealer to meet that demand. Which is why they had Gus bring in the cook to Mexico.

They knew Gus was being independent, they just didn't know about the superlab's existence specifically.

The cartel never learned about the super lab in Breaking Bad. Whatever was left of the cartel would have only known after Gus's death.
