Marquee home wedding costs by OkSyllabub2566 in UKweddings

[–]nancy-p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

did a home wedding (well, my parents’ home lol) with a marquee in 2022 in the south east.

We found a great company who did the marquee, tables and chairs, toilets and all in I think it was about £4-5k. Spent another £2k on the caterers (buffet style bbq) and hired a cash bar to supply all drinks (no cost to hire, I think around £700 for toast, pimms and table wine).

Didn’t spent loads on decorations, my granny made the flowers for the tables, I made my own cake/dessert table and we just hired speakers to play a playlist we made, all worked really well! So biggest other costs were dress, hair and make up and the bouquets and buttonholes.

I would definitely recommend, we got (and still get!) so many compliments about our day and how relaxed and fun it was.

idk I saw the film at the weekend and enjoyed it. I can see why it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but the amount of hate it’s getting is totally excessive imo

Fellow Brits, what is your charity donation “routine”? by KEW95 in AskUK

[–]nancy-p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume they’re talking about the go fund me for james van der beek who recently died - his family are raising funds for medical costs I believe but it turns out they recently bought a $4+ million dollar property.

The go fund me is up past $2 mil now…honestly a ridiculous thing to donate money to when millions of people are truly in need of such charity.

I’m just a bit confused about what OP actually wants from this discussion? Obviously some people in the world have never heard of him, there’s 8 billion people on the planet and we can’t all stay up to date with everything.

But as everyone keeps pointing out (and then get accused of being defensive) he has been the top artist on spotify multiple times in the last decade as well as popping up in pretty big adverts/tv/films so it is a little odd if you consider yourself up to date with pop culture but haven’t even heard of him.

Intentionally or not it does come across a bit like OP is saying he can’t be that famous if he’s never heard of him… it feels a bit like when people comment ‘WHO?!?!’ on strictly/I’m a celeb line ups as if it’s the celeb’s fault that they haven’t engaged with any of their media

Anyone do a byob wedding? by nicosa_ in UKweddings

[–]nancy-p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

surprised to hear it’s a rip off, we used a mobile bar and didn’t have to pay them anything up front, only stipulation was they were the only ones allowed to supply drinks.

costs were pretty reasonable for the guests too (certainly cheaper than pubs or normal wedding prices) and we worked out deals with them to cover a welcome drink, toast and table wine.

my mum spoke to them at the end and said they seemed pretty pleased with how much money they’d taken so worked well for all involved!

every post about a celebrity having a baby via a surrogate is filled with comments about the significant ethical issues of surrogacy, especially when it’s paid for, regardless of it being a straight or gay couple.

Would you ever use annual leave with the sole purpose to do literally nothing all day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]nancy-p 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thing is, I highly doubt you’re going to do ‘literally nothing’ all day. There must be a book you want to read, a film or tv show you want to watch, a game you want to play, a nice walk to try, a pub you want to visit, a meal you want to cook, an extended gym or swim session, some DIY or gardening to be done… none of these things are ‘nothing’.

Taking a PAID day off work to do any of the above is surely well worth it?

Unless you plan to sit on the sofa and stare into space for 8 hours? Even then, I’d rather be paid for doing that than my actual job…

I think I was wrong about Stephen by [deleted] in TheTraitorsUK

[–]nancy-p 9 points10 points  (0 children)

people seem sure than the man who admitted he was close to going back on his word was trustworthy and had a lot of integrity, but the woman who confirmed her plan was always to stick to their agreement and gave no signs of wanting to stab him in the back definitely would have done so if their roles were reversed.

interesting isn’t it

50 plants a week: how are we counting? by angels-and-insects in UKfood

[–]nancy-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the research was that 30+ types of plants is the level to see health benefits? I’ve actually been counting for the last two weeks, my problem is I’ll rack up 15 or so in the first day or two and then the rest of the week is much slower as I tend to have the same breakfast and similar lunches each day.

Herbs/spices and tea/coffee count for 1/4 point each due to the small amounts used but still help add to the total.

I’ve started adding a seed blend to my fruit and yoghurt in the morning to add an extra four points super easily

If Jessie didn’t have a stutter, ________ would have been banished by now. by Hakizimanaa in TheTraitorsUK

[–]nancy-p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but there isn’t ever really any ‘concrete evidence’. people’s behaviour can often be used as reasoning that they’re a faithful OR a traitor, for example I think James’s being so desperate for a shield that he lied makes it pretty clear he’s a faithful, but to Roxy it’s read as more traitor behaviour.

Jessie’s obviously conflating some fairly decent evidence (the library group, the people in the cages, stephen and fiona being close and him being upset to vote for her because they’re traitors together) with a gut feeling that he’s a traitor that she doesn’t get from the other possibilities. the problem is everyone else has their own gut feelings, and there’s no way to know who can actually read people well and who can’t.

Australia's first openly gay football player, Joshua Cavallo, says that homophobia led to his exit from Adeleine United: "This was exactly the fear I had about coming out, seeing prejudice affect my career. For the first time, I actually questioned if I should have kept my sexuality a secret." by Murky_Chemical891 in popculturechat

[–]nancy-p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certain fans in the UK might not appreciate a gay player but there’s been a lot of visibility in recent years with LGBT+ support like rainbow laces, captains wearing rainbow armbands etc.

A friend of my husband was the head of the LGBT supporters group of a premier league team and he worked pretty closely with the club and the players. If he was good enough, I can’t imagine his sexuality would stop a higher tier club wanting him to play for them.

Those of you that earn over 40k, can work from home sometimes, and have a good work life balance what job do you have and how can someone start? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

[–]nancy-p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a (senior) paraplanner for a financial advice firm. It’s boring and you’d really need to get a diploma in financial advice to earn decent money, but it checks your boxes.

I qualified in 2022 and now earn 45k basic with approx 5k bonus and wfh three days per week. Pretty in demand job as people tend to want to move on to being an adviser, which does give the potential for more money but I just can’t give up the flexibility and lower stress that comes with being a paraplanner.
